This weeks Good Job podcast guest is Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinjer. It is difficult to think of anyone that fully embodies the idea of Roaring as much as Tatiana. If you haven’t come across her work, I really suggest you check out her band Jinjer, a band that combine genres like reggae, jazz and funk with metal. In this episode we chat about how Tatiana learned to scream, her thoughts on how to be an extrovert on stage but an introvert in life and of course, her journey from student in Ukraine to Metal artist.

It sounds alot like ADD/ADHD...I totally understands why she prefers to be home alone alot becouse you take in so much moore information then others who dont have that mind, you can't really sortout stuff that's noncens or information that isn't that important. from sound to images, it all gets in.. no filter. then you have to have moore time re-chargeing you batteries, you get lockdown...people that don't suffer from this think it's a minor thing to deal with but it's not, it's extreamly tiering the thoughts goes in 1000m/h no stop no rest only thing to calm it down is to do creative stuff in silence all by your self no interuptions. And medication of course

Up until now, most rock and metal bands sing in a western(meaning American) accent. So the music that artists have grown up with was sung with that accent. So as they mimicked the music they loved, they learned to sing in an American accent. As the number of Scandinavian and European bands making the international scene rises, we will possibly hear more of their accent in their music.

Singing, or lines in acting are rehearsed. Conversations are not. Also, singing uses tricks to not strain their voice by using different vowels that are easier for the voice. If in conversation you say "pliis stej" you would learn that singing that is easier with "plees stey"

It's called being bilingual, and coming from a Russian speaker, she really controls her pronunciation. She doesn't have that heavy Russian accent the other guys have, and it's probably because the songs are written and sang in English... See how it's all connected?

But if you’re an English speaker naturally, you can learn how to sing in another language if you just work on the pronunciations.

Brian, much the same thing happened in the guitar community. It's only been in the past 5 years or so that the various guitar techniques have been "codified" and explained down to the bio mechanical elements. It's kinda funny to go back and re-watch the "instructional" videos of my youth, by the very people performing these amazing feats of guitar playing; Guitarists like Vinnie Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Friedman, so on and so forth... Made videos that basically came down to:" Well, you just kinda do it" :) They would play snippets of their songs slow to "show us how it was done", what they didn't know is that one plays differently when doing it slow X Fast. It wasn't until people like Troy Grady and others took a step back and really spent A LOT OF TIME analyzing their playing that we finally understood what was going on "under the hood". Even myself, at one point something just clicked inside my brain and I could just do it, but if you asked me to explain it I wouldn't have been able to. I would probably have tried to explain it, but much like he masters would have come way short :) I now know that I developed a hybrid picking technique comprised of downward and upward pick slanting, sweep picking, and that I am "chunking" information so my brain can keep up with it, but back in the day I would have told you to just practice....
@sgtraytango
@sgtraytango 3 жыл бұрын
@@marviosantos Yeah, self-taught after not understanding the "how to play" videos I had as a kid and it was cool to watch the S&M behind the scenes documentary Metallica did in 99 and James Hetfield being utterly confused because he didn't know any chords, he just played and it came naturally. Same with me, I've been playing since 2000 and I could only show you what a C chord is, no idea what the rest are.

You know what's interesting? The part when Tatyana says that her Growling/Singing requires constant practice, that if she goes for long enough without doing it she "forgets" how to do it. It reminded me a lot of an interview Senna gave once upon returning from break from a previous season. Mind you, he was already 2 times F1 world champion at that point, after his first practice lap, returning to the garage he said (paraphrasing):" Wow, it is so easy to forget how hard it is to drive these cars, you really have to keep on it or loose it". It goes to the constant struggle we all go through doing something that requires a high skill level, lay people may think that it's a "gift", that you are "born with it". Nothing is further from the truth !

Tatiana is such a fantastic woman. Always enjoy her interviews. Her band just keeps getting more bad ass with every album.

Forgot to say thanks so much to you both for giving us a look behind the stage tatiana we see. I’m not a big growler kinda girl, but I can appreciate the hard ass work that you have to put in for your craft. And to do it and not ruin your voice is amazing.

Thank you Tatiana, for being genuine about your answers; especially for the "making profit" of your singing prowess. It's so easy to lie right there and say it was natural and that you had no intentions of making something for the accolades of it, not that either way is wrong, but it's so very refreshing to hear honesty and clear intentions. Very much like you said when you "knew" you were going to go somewhere and what desire you had to take you there. As opposed to "oh I just happened to have done it, no design im just lucky" or something.

That was really nice/pleasant, Beth. You are a great interviewer- thank you! I wanted it to go on, a bit more anyway....and .seemed like she enjoyed your questions - she's definitely an energetic, emotional spirit, a positive intelligent energy. Their music is amazing, and their live show is fantastic! She definitely unleashes that "10%" extrovert on stage! Thanks again for all you do! Cheers!

Been a fan of Jinjer for almost 11 years and guess if I'm happy they've finally made it to the top. I remember when they were doing small shows with like 4-5 people in the audience and how they put on a grind. The band is imo one of the best musicians out there no matter genre, they are super tight and skilled because few bands can incorporate different genres in metal and make it so fluid and good. Tatiana is a great performer and a humble person that is awesome as a front person for a band but people tend to forget the other band members that are exceptionally good at what they do. In this interview I understand the focus is on Tatiana with all right I just wanted to point it out. For me as a long time fan that found them on an underground message board around 2010-2011 the evolution of this band is extraordinary even if they were very very good already when their first demos and singles came out. Good interview Beth, you're an extraordinary person as well!
