This video is GREAT for spotting parts at swap meets. The dislikers should STFU and learn. Any mechanic can understand what is shown, and novices will learn from it. If you want to work on engines (ANY engine) you need to study your ass off. I've been at it about 40 years and learn something useful on nearly every job. BWT if you want to run a bagger box with integral oil tank on Evo or Shovel you can use a bagger pump cover to match. (I did on my FXR).

if the case has a high blowoff hole it most likely takes the 1981 evo pump. if it does not, than the stock 70's pump. tatro

changing from stock iron pump on 56 pan 2 a sns the guide pins ar larger . is it true that you do not need to run the pins a all. to me it that gust don't set right . is this true/

So, are the stock pumps not high volume and the HV pumps for performance modifications? I have no idea which I have.

stock oil pumps are standard volume. high volume pumps have way bigger gears and look total dfferent.. tatro

Tatro helppp. I just came upon this issue thankfully. I pulled a pump off another of my shovels, before I spent money, to make a repair to my stock pump that was allowing some serious sumping, the stationary pin came out and the pump is now junk. I went to put this extra aftermarket pump on and it has this “extra hole” you described in the video. Basically in a nutshell you are saying if I have something pre 1981 I need to drill the cases cause all these aftermarket pumps have this passage? And the only way I can get by without drilling is to get another stock pump somewhere? Or can I mount an aftermarket without drilling?

Tatro I noticed on the early pump you are showing there is a distressed looking area in the body at about the level of where the check ball seat is, I noticed this on the pump I just removed from my 78 1/2 fxe, is this a defect? or anything I need to be concerned about

it depends on what you are looking at. if it seals the oil in or makes pressure than it need to be good. if not than no. tatro

Would the Ultima standard volume pump fit on a late 83?

it does if you buy the correct year version. the oil lines will be different and you will lose the oil sender. if you want to keep the sender, just reuse your old oil pump cover. tatro

Will the ultima pump you mentioned you like, the jireh part # 98-518 fit an S&S shovelhead case? I find conflicting info online. I see pumps for 73'-91' big twins, like jireh part # 98-641. I like the look of the one you like, 98-641 has a primary oiler I do t need and it's ugly because I won't use it. Any info would help.

+dankhimself i only use two different bigtwin oil pumps. the 81-91 or the 92-99 pump. the 81-91 pump will fit motors from 1936-80 if you do not want chain oilers and change a hole or two. you will have to drill the oil bypass relief hole into the cam chest. i use the high volume pump on the generator motor because of how the complete motor is oiled with just one feed hole. you must restrict the feed to the rods or you will have no oil flow to your topend. i like the reed breather too. tatro

+Tatro Machine thanks for the response. Only high flow's were available, the 81-91, but I'm building a new shovel with velvatouch lifters and thinking of Evo oiling. I think that should be fine for the engine. S&S cases, ultima crank, Evo roller rockers and lots of other goodies. I appreciate the information. I'll pick up that S&S drill jig asap. Right on.

mainly the rings are bad. its called blow-by. the other option is that the breather system is plugged up or the breather timing valve is off. tatro

After taking the stock oil pump apart and removing the S&S breather gear, which was timed correctly and was not clogged, I detemined the check valve was leaking a slew of oil into the crank while the bike was sitting. After watching your video and speaking with the shop that had rebuilt the entire motor a few years back I decided to do the following; I lapped the check ball, then I installed a new spring/ball, wet sumped my primary, installed the S&S reed valve breather, and have refired the engine without any oil puking out of the breather tube as of yet. Thanks for the input from your videos, they are very helpful!

what is the deal installing a sifton oil pump on an 81 shovel. every damn time i try to install a new component i run into 80-81 only warnings? the holes are different on the pump and gasket, some are blocked by the gasket, and some just dont exist when matching to the case.......

siftn never made oil pumps. they made camshafts and relate parts. sifton now is just another taiwan teddy parts name. 1980 is the last year of the shovelhead oil pump and 1982 is the 1st year of the evo oil pump. the big differeance is the oil pressure bypass hole that you have to drill into the case. most everything else is good as is. follow the instructions and use the drill jig and you will be fine. tatro

@@TatroMachine thank you tatro. now i know why i got this 81 fxs so cheap. i have found so many fucked up things in this motor, and now i know why, but this one is takin a lot of preventive research. does the 81 head need to have valve seals installed? every time i research this engine i get conflicting answers.kinda reminds me of the 79 sportsters.......

I love the vids but hate the god damned racket of fumbling parts around which drowns out the speaking. My only complaint so I'll live with myself on that.
