Thank you for creating your channel with needle tatting! My mom tried to teach me needle tatting when I was about 17 years old. It seemed much easier than the shuttle tatting my grandmother (her mom) did, and I was excited to be another generation to learn how. Fast forward to me in my 50's and my mother's health diminishing. On my list of the many things I will miss about my mom would be to not remember how to needle tat. I'm remembering more quickly now, and your way of teaching is very calm and steady. Thank you, again.

This brings many happy memory of my childhood a very long time ago! I remember my mother doing this while I did my homework. Sometimes she did crochet sometimes tatting or knitting while I sat at the lap end of the Singer sewing machine writing down something for my teacher for the next day, but I often glanced at my mother with her fingers so agile creating wonderful patterns. Happy memories, even though there was a war going on. Still I remember the tatting but not the war so thank you for the memories.

thanks so much for your awesome tutorials.i love tatting and have done shuttle tatting, but this is really much quicker and easier on my hands, as i have carpal tunnell and diabetic neuropathy. I am so glad to find a method that means i dont have to give up tatting. Thanks Kate.

Thank you, Deby, and I am so glad that you like the videos and have been tatting! :) KZfaq recently auto-updated my pages to the new format, which is harder to navigate then the old, so that is probably why you haven't been able to find the links to the pattern you are looking for. On the main page you should see the "about" button towards the top of the page, click that and go to bottom of that page there should be an Etsy and a Craftsy link, the pattern is available on both. :)

Your directions are clean and precise. I loved your speed method using the thumb for the first half, leaving you set up to do the second half of the double stitch. The close ups are in focus which I have found to be a problem for some video makers. Thank you for your great videos,

So glad to hear that you are enjoying it, Maureen! :) I gave myself carpal tunnel in my teens (crocheting too much), that's one of the reasons I gravitated towards needle tatting too; like you say, it is easier on the hands than shuttle. I was super glad to find it too, that is one of the reasons that I love sharing how to do it with everyone. Have fun, create beautiful things!!! If you ever want to share pictures of your tatting, you can on the RustiKate facebook page. :)

I am very glad that you have found tatting! :) The needle is called a "tatting needle", I use size 5. You can also use a 5 inch doll needle, either works fine. They can be purchased on Amazon. The item that looks like a little fish, is called a tatting shuttle. There are two methods for tatting one uses a needle and the other uses a shuttle. The results are the same, whichever method you use. :)

Hi Kate: I have been TRYING to tat with a shuttle on & off for about 6 months. That was until I found your site. In 15 minutes, I was following everything you demonstrated. I'm so excited. I threw the shuttles away!! I am having problems trying to remember to make the knot at the end of rings and chains. Working on that. I notice you are using some thread in a skein. What kind is it? I love how your tatting looks using that thread. I will be following you from now on. My grandmother passed before she could teach me tatting. So I am eager to learn. Enjoy ALL of your videos. Awesome!!

I am so glad that you are tatting now, and that I was able to help you learn something that was a family art form. :) Your grandma would be proud of you! The thread I use is called DMC Baroque Crochet Cotton size 10, and I love it! You can find it on Amazon, and I have a few for sale on my Etsy Shop as well: www.etsy.com/shop/RustiKate. Happy tatting! And you can stay in touch and show me what you are working on the RustiKate Facebook Page. ~ Katy :)

So wonderful to hear, Amy!!!! :) You can share photos of your projects on the RustiKate facebook page (I have an album and everything on there, for bragging about you all, so proud of the creativity I see and work you all put into it!). Google "free tatting patterns", there are a ton out there. KZfaq doesn't allow links here, or I'd show you some good ones. The ones I like the best are vintage tatting patterns that are in the public domain, very stunning projects!

RustiKate Thanks. After watching your videos, I purchased some needles, and I'm totally sold. Like everything, there's a learning curve, but I don't allow myself to be defeated easily, so I'm confident I'll get it. I think the hardest part is understanding how to link things up, but I'm getting better at that, too. When I feel I am creating perfect little pieces, I will begin to advance beyond practice pieces. When I was 9, my mother taught me how to crochet with fine thread, beginning with a chain stitch. By the time I had umpteen yards of chain, I was ready to go on to the next step, and that's how I work with everything: Don't move on to the second step until after first perfecting the first. Thanks for all the helpful advice!!!
