Finally! Thank you for making a video that explains and demonstrates this technique clearly and simply without over-complicating it. It really is not difficult, but other instructions leave steps out to make it seem complicated. Your explanations are excellent! A couple of days ago, I started to learn tatting with shuttles but I knew I wasn’t doing something right. I’m highly experienced with knitting, so I kept thinking that this could not be that complicated and I even broke down and bought a book-what a waste that was. Last night I finally decided to just try it on tatting needles based on the cardboard instructions that came with them and it all became clear. The only question I had remaining was how to correctly chain them together and you just made my day! I highly recommend that anyone learning tatting to start on tatting needles first before going to shuttles. I’m still curious to learn what patterns require shuttles instead of tatting needles. I’m going to look now to see if you have figured out the shuttle! Well done and many thanks! Cheers!

Thanks for explaining everything so clearly each step of the way. A lot of tutorials I've found for various crafty things don't tell you what they are doing or explain what the stitches etc are.

Thanks for sharing a nice, easy to understand tatting method. I've used something called a locker hook (from Joann Fabrics) and regular yarn to practice new stitches. It's like tatting on steroids, but it makes the process easier to see until you get the hang of it.

I want to thank you so much for your clear and helpful video on needle tatting! I have been struggling with how to hold the work after closing a ring, and also how to join picots. You have made my day!!!!!

Yep. I use a doll needle and just dull it down with sandpaper. And...a sidewalk. Concrete. Dull down the tip. It works. I also do a lot of my own designs and I don't care for a flat look at all. I freestyle. I do "stems" which are just a long, continuous amount of first half of the stitch and then alternating the second half of the stitch....that way it never arches but does leave it quite pliable and I can then bend it anywhere I want. If I do a stem but want a picot I switch to a few regular chain stitches, do the picot, a few chain stitches, then back to first half, first half, first half (or second, second, second (whatever) and randomly, completely randomly continue a freestyled design. I have realized that flipping the work changes the direction of the arch. Now THAT was a wealth of information and I had more control over the design. The regular chain always gives a curve to the left....flip work....chain goes in opposite direction from before....ah ha moment. Just thought I'd share. Makes a nice border, too.

Hi... thank you so very much for posting this instructional video. I was taught how to tat when I was just a ten year old boy by my Great-grandmother. Hey 👋 you don't tie any knots after your rings or chains; I think it makes the tatting lay flatter that way, japanese tatters some videos also do it that way too. The reason I thought you were supposed to tie knot after each ring and chain, most american videos show this method. I don't think the tatting will come apart without the knots tied. Interesting video and will watch more, thank you. 😀

With needle tatting, you need to make a single knot after each element, either ring or chain. Tatting with a shuttle you only make knots when told to do so in the pattern.

I thank you for your video on tatting. I have yards of the chains in my cedar chest. It was tatted by my great aunt, 80 years ago. My mother made beautiful dresses for me when I was an infant and a little girl and used the tatting. Now that I have granddaughters, I have wished to know how my great aunt could have tatted with only her delicate thread and a needle. Thank you. Jeanelle

Your tatting is lovely, but I feel sorry for those who follow your tutorial, as when you go from ring to a chain, and back to a ring you need to do a knot after each (element) ring or chain. Please watch some tutorials for just needle tatting Beginning Tatting Video Series they start at #1 and go through all you need to know for needle tatting. Other wise your video's are good learning as you go at a slow pace and show good position of the stitches you are working on!
