TATTOOS HAVE A DEEP MEANING IN KALINGA.
And in Lubo, Tanudan, I discovered that there is a deep yet unknown culture of tattooing, that still lives on today!
The result of a peace pact between Lubo and Buscalan during her younger years, Apo Whang-Od visited Tanudan and was tattooed herself, then shared the culture in Buscalan.
A beautiful village surrounded by terraces, Lubo's three barangays form a circular shape in the middle. And a stunning, peaceful place it is.
The video starts though, in Balbalasang in Balbalan - a village built by missionaries in the 1930s then rebuilt after WW2 (though a community was here long before) - it is surrounded by a beautiful pine forest that holds many secrets!

I am in awe with how you present your stories-- informative, creative and sensible. These qualities set you apart from most vloggers. It feels like watching documentaries. You don't give opinions and comments about topics that are dear to the locals. Instead you allow your visuals to tell the stories. That's how a good presenter should be. But your humour comes in the right places. Being able to visit places only a few can reach makes you exceptional . And being able to share these to viewers is commendable and appreciated. Hats off to you.

I went to Balbalan in 2002 and had an overnight stay in Balbalasang. The place is beautiful and you can feel it has an enchanting ambiance. It is a special place, back then it was hardly accessible. We had to hike down to Pinukpuk to get home. It still looks beautiful and has retained its charm. I’m glad the locals take pride of their home and heritage. Good take KD. ❤❤❤

Your FIRST Tattoo, KumanderD?! That surely is one UNIQUE Souvenir from Kalinga. ... How lucky you are to be "adopted" by the Village leaders. P.S. From the drone shots, the rice terraces look even more BEGUILING than Banaue, in my humble opinion.

Thank you for an informative video about Kalinga tattoo culture while being sensitively humorous, colorful, and awkwardly human. Most vloggers come for the hype and are too predictable. It gets tiring. You're the wise and intelligent one, Daot! Kudos!

From "mosquito bite" pain to lying down in anguish while one of the guys simply chillin' lol! That back story of peace pact between Lubo & Buscalan "paints" quite an interesting perspective to the evolution of Apo Whang-od's tattoo legacy. Great video!

Kumander, I am always so amazed on how well you cope and adapt to the ways of life down there in the province. Way that we who grew in the urban lifestyle are finding it hard to easily adapt and adjust. From Bathroom and Restroom usage to the mountainous terrains there. I am so proud of our kababayans who has thrived and adapted the way of life and living out there. 👍👍🙏🙏 Thank you for showing this part and side of the country to us living in the cities. 🙏🙏💐💐❤❤

KD, so much respect to you for visiting these communities. Especially, the fascinating community of Lubo! It is so unique in how it is positioned in the middle of the rice terraces, but it is also so rich for its heritage of tattooing in the Philippines. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Personally, I'm not one for tattoos, but I give you much credit for persevering through that marathon tattooing session. I like how you got one of the traditional tattoo designs, which was selected specifically for you for its deep meaning and how it applies to your life. I know my dad would have loved walking the trails of Balbalasang and collecting mushrooms. He used to pick mushrooms here where I live in New England, and, as a result, I grew up with a love for mushrooms. Unfortunately, he only shared his knowledge of mushrooms (which were safe to eat and where to find them) with my oldest brother, so I am not confident of which ones I can pick and safely eat.

What a great feature you did for this humble village. That trail and foraging shrooms was so insanely beautiful! It's such a refreshing perspective that you chose get tattooed by these men because they deserve just as much accolade as Whang-Od. And wow, what an awesome first tattoo, most memorable 9hrs lol. Thank you for what you do! I truly appreciate the effort you put in to get to these places and interact with the locals. Long live Kumander!

15:12 Those are granaries for rice. In ancient times they were considered sacred, and often included a carving of an anito inside. I don't know if they still have them. Granaries like these are the origin of the stilt houses among Austronesian cultures. They also evolved into "spirit houses" in some cultures, like those found in Bali, and into storage houses in the Pacific, like the pātaka of the New Zealand Māori.
