Stretching the skin when I first started was definitely one of the most challenging things. It's so crazy how much a difference a good stretch makes!

Having just started to do tattoos I've found that the most difficult things generally have to do with my setup. I realized that I'd taken things like moving around the chair and positioning myself in an optimal position for granted. Luckily my mentor pointed this out when he found me tattoing my friends shoulder in a contorted position, and the other artist showed me how to pull lines better. Great show as always!

Your viedo is really helpful and stretching is by far the most imortant thing for a good tattoo, at least 30-60% on my opinion. Can you make a video about the comparison of linework with round shader and liner needles? I use both and always depends on the desing and position, but your opinion will be really valuable on that topic as well :)

In general for straight lines you want to pull & strecth the skin in the opposite direction you are moving your machine. If you pull your lines in an upward motion, you pull the skin down to stretch.

Great, great tips. For some reason I always thought the goal was to do the whole tattoo without asking the client to move or adjust, and that having to ask was a shortcoming on my part. I don't know why I got that idea in my head, but I'm going to be less shy about asking them to change positions until we find the sweet spot for each part of the tattoo.

I usually start with positioning client and explain that this way area will be nice and stretched with makes it easier for both of us and then it is also makes more sense when we need reposition

Carlis my man, you might just have a ganglion cyst lingering around in your hand between the bones. The swelling comes and goes and is painful to work with... Have it checked immediately when it comes back again and have it removed! (Had the same thing with my hand and also a similar old accident to my hand before working). Stay safe y’all 😉 and love the vidz!

i knew a sigh painter (painted signs with paint and brush, not electronic or vinyl) He would talk about old timey tricks to saving the body and body parts so one could work into old age. His favorite was to hold the brush with the dominant hand and then putting the other hand palm of the second hand to the heal of the dominant hand with the second thumb in the palm of the dominant hand. Imagine holding the an imaginary pistol and then putting the second hand palm against the butt of the handle, abit the same but one is holding a brush or a tattoo machine. One can do anything with the elbows and sholders, they can go anywhere as long as the hands can work together. It makes it difficult in tattooing to strech the skin, but if you have someone to stretch while you work, we would call that person an apprentice.

Oh, one more thing, the artist needs to strech thier skin too. Stand up reach for the sky, touch your toes, twist at the waste walk around. The more limber you are the more apt you will not tend to get repetitive injuries or blown out spinal vertebre. Go trade a tattoo to that cute little yoga teacher for some yoga classes. The better you feel the better your body works the better your work will be. Take care of yourselves, your partners will appreciate it.

Is stretching by bending a joint, (after your stencil of course) a good idea? Say you're doing a thigh near the knee. Would bending the knee give you a "free stretch" lets say, for the lines going in the direction??
@TattooShopTalk
@TattooShopTalk Жыл бұрын
Sure. Bending knee for placements you mentioned or bend arm for elbow and above it tattoos

That's something you want to take care of with some stretching and exercise. It's not nice feeling and in long term might cause some issues if you don't work on it.
