I truly believed that she looked like a younger version of Janet Hubert when they were both on the Fresh Prince. And that was NOT because of her skin colour either.

My cousin grandfather told a story about the church he attended in new Jersey back in the day, it was a black church how they separated families in the church by the brown paper bag comparison if you were lighter than the paper bag you had to sit on one side of the church and the darker people sat on the other side families didn't sit together I was shocked hearing this as a kid ,and couldn't believe my ears

Im sure your GP was telling the truth but still i find that too hard to believe. But colourism does exist in the black community, i have suffered it myself, actually its never been because of my colour, but rather because of my education, how i speak and how i carry myself.

Unapologetically black: let me take a gander did they expect rolling heads, rolling eyes, or hands on hip back bone slip...shake it.../who wrote a script like that, and why was an attitude represented by race in a story. Colorism is real in the black community and unfortunately the matter is now becoming addressed.

She just said that she knows what "an unapologetically black woman" means... but she was weirded out when they asked her be that character. Well if you know what it means and they asked you to play that role as an actor, I dont really understand the issue. Was she offended by that stereotype? Did she turn down the role? What was the point of that statement?
@ThaMobstarr
@ThaMobstarr 3 жыл бұрын
She pretty much said it in the next sentence. Her interpretation of "unapologetically black" didn't match with the view of some corportate folks that she encountered in her professional life. So yes, she didn't get the role because they were probably pushing a representation of black women or a black person that was supposed to appeal to a wider (probably also white) audience than really portray the identity and self-esteem of an unapologetically black women.
@tuberx5121
@tuberx5121 3 жыл бұрын
OK, let me explain it for you. Its because when a hollywood role says "unapologetically black"..it means STEREOTYPICALLY black. She obviously has an idea of what that means, as we all do. But its hard to quantify and specify when trying to instruct an actor into projecting particular traits. Its problematic because it puts blackness into a narrow personality box. Any black person who is him/herself is unapologetically black. Bryant Gumbel is one of the most unapologetically black celebrities out there....moreso than most rappers, who are largely fake w made up personas. But I think we both know thats not what the hollywood directors mean when they say "unapologetically". They mean stereotypically.

@@abundanthealthservices Yes, it does. I was just remembering old shows like Good Times where the whole family was dark-skinned. Everybody Hates Chris had a great mother. My daughter watched every episode of that show at least ten times. There's still such a long way to go for black women to be depicted as black women. Sure there are light-skinned or mixed women but so many beautiful dark skinned women are still kept out of the media. I can think of Michonne in The Walking Dead but that's about it. I don't watch much tv though. I did watch a film the other day and was happy to see so many African names amongst the producers, director etc.

She isn't light skin she has lose hair. So people often call her light skin because she doesn't have kinky hair. I think the issue with claiming that things are a construct everything even government. Each country runs their country differently with different laws but like colorism and racism there are real consequences and privileges to colorism. Just like many wealthy people run government and even non-governmental officials can surpass many laws with their wealth privilege looking a certain way especially as a partial or fully black woman can live life differently. A non-mixed light skin black woman still has privilege in black society and it white. People often assume a light skin person who is "well-spoken" as they say has one white parent. White people assume their politics align with theirs. And in the film industry the mixed and light skin women are first choices for most roles especially as wives and girlfriends while the dark skin black women are picked as the angry hard to get along with sister souja types. Even in Being Mary Jane, even as successful as she was Mary Jane was seen as a mess.

Colorisn is all around the world. In India it is a caste system and you are permanently fixed in your caste at birth. All of it is a European construct and a product of their invasion and warfare around the world. The conquered people of the world adopted this way of looking at themselves while at the some time placing a value on their life and the life of others around them. If you were a child of the invader and your mother had another child by a native, then you were more valuable and superior. Perhaps this was because you could win your family value or favor. Never mind that your mama may have been raped to conceive you. In modern times, it's removed from its roots and it a mindless way to rank yourself and to win an empty fake superiority. I don't seem to be able to take it in. It has never meant a thing to me and if so, it's in reverse. I love dark people, I think they are beautiful. My sister is dark, I'm much lighter. I love my sister and I love myself. I just plain like us in the full range of colors. I love seeing us on TV and I always will.

@@rajeshkumar-mo8tx Before colonization, where did many of the people of India come from? What went on before the migration? Looking at this part of history and understanding the events helps with understanding why people are engaged in their social structures... why they stratify their society in the way that they do. But, a discussion targeting India is not the point. Their is something that does not make sense that is happening with African people in the diaspora. It's painful, unkind and destructive. It separates families and friends. It can even separate a person from their true self. Colorism is a divisive tool that undermines the power of people in all areas of life -- the economy, politics, religion, education, entertainment and so on. The pain of it is showing up here in this KZfaq video...

Smh, Tatyana was asked what colorism is and instead of her actually admitting that she does not experience colorism since she is brown skin she centers herself to speak about anti blackness and racism. She shouldn’t have been speaking on behalf of colorism because brown skin people don’t face colorism they face anti blackness.
