:smiles: The more reactions I watch of this retelling of your fathers story, it seems the more deeply I feel it. My deepest wish is that Franz could have witnessed, all these decades later, how nearly everyone honours and respects his decision to act as he did. Those in Canada who called him Nazi should have known better and shamed only themselves. Those from Germany who called him Traitor did so from a place of comfort and safety and in the majority of cases had no understanding that there *is* a code, unwritten, amongst fighting men, that sometimes mercy is a preferable choice to victory. Because war in the air was relatively new and has its own practical problems in such matters, it was hard for that code to be implemented but any fair-minded and honourable person could see that Ye Olde Pub was 'defeated' and if Franz had shot her down I have no doubt he would have felt himself a murderer for the rest of his days.
@wesleymartin1554

It's also a tribute to Franz that in fact Ye Olde Pub has been restored and is flying in Texas. It's just a pity that his own 109 has not had the same treatment. It would be a fitting tribute to both men if they were flying together again.

I don't remember where I heard this story, whether from an interview or something I read, but Franz would often join Charlie's bomber group reunions. The first one or one of the first reunions that Franz went to, he said that he was standing there looking out on the crowd of people and he just had a feeling that he shouldn't be there. He told Charlie and he said that Charlie put his hand on his arm and told him that the men and women in the crowd were the Children and Grandchildren of the men that he saved that day, and he had every right to be there with them. Just writing this is bringing a tear to my eye.

An interesting side note as to why Franz did what he did. When he was training to be a pilot his Commander and Mentor Gustav Rodel had one strict rule: NO Shooting down any man in a parachute. He considered those paratroopers helpless and incapable of fighting back so it would be dishonorable to shoot them out of the sky. He was quoted saying "If I hear of one of you shooting a man in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself!" Franz saw how disabled the Bomber was and in his mind shooting it down was no better than shooting down someone in a parachute.

I remember in an interview Franz said when he was lining up to make the shot, he noticed the tail gunner was bleeding profusely and he couldn't do it. He saw a vessel full of people who needed help, so he helped them, despite the fact that he would likely be killed if anyone knew. He also flew close enough to them that ground weapons couldn't shoot, for fear of hitting him, too. What a guy!!

There is even more to this story that is untold here. If Franz Stigler would have shot down the Ye Olde Pub he would have earned himself a cushy desk job away from the front lines and away from the immediate danger. Instead he saved them even his own life as he was taught that you do not attack the defenseless. What a man of principles, a really honorable man. This song and video is a truly epic tribute to the man. His family must be so proud! Beautiful reaction aswell, thank you!

Hi Judah l loved your comments about no bullets Fly, l am someone who just cannot connect to rock music, mostly because any words are overpowered by in my view just a noise. I still give each song a chance, but generally they get 15 seconds. However, This song by Sabaton is a fantastic piece of storytelling of a true account and they have honoured this in the way they have delivered the song and agree a100pc with your comments. I watched it 3 times and another today. Just a final comment my son's into Iron Maiden, Guns+ Roses so I texted him about this song, he was in Munich, how about that for irony. Take care Judah, Graham

If any one song shows that what Sabaton do is more than make music it is this one. They are keeping history alive, they are keeping the stories and memories of the men and women they sing about alive. These guys are very much the modern day equivalent of the medieval era bards singing the stories and songs of battles fought and the heroes and people who fought in them.

By far, my favorite Sabaton song, and the one I can most relate to. I live near Bremen (the place they bombed) and Oldenburg (where they almost crashed), and one of my Opas (Grandpa) was a AA-gunner at the Atlantikwall, in the Netherlands. I wonder if he saw a BF-109 escorting a B-17? Also, my grandma and aunts had to run to the air-raid shelter because of this air raid. Great reaction.

There so many more things to say about this incident. 1/ I believe there was a standing order to not spare any plane or even pilot in a parachute. If anyone had reported the incident Stigler would most likely have been court martialed and shot 2/ Stigler stayed with the B-17 to keep the AA gunners from shooting it down, not leaving it until they got to the coast. He first wanted them to land but they refused, he then wanted them to fly to Sweden as it was closer than Britain, but they didnt understand what he meant and continued to fly towards Britain 3/ When fighting in Africa, Stigler was told by his commander, Gustav Rödel, that if you follow this order to shoot down helpless enemies I will shoot you myself. You will not follow this order to save the enemy but to save your soul because you will never forgive yourself. Stigler has said that he remembered this when he was thinking about shooting down the bomber 4/ Brown told his commander when he was debriefed and to an intelligence officer. However he was ordered not to tell anyone and the whole thing was kept secret. There was two reasons for this, one was that they didnt want other bomber crews to think that the next german fighter would spare them, and the other reason was they they didnt want the enemy to be portrayed in a humane way. 5/ Everyone in the B-17, except the initially killed gunner survived the war, with the last member dying in 2016 6/ The reason Stigler didnt fire in the first place was that he saw that the tail gunner machineguns were pointing upwards, showing no one was using them. When he came closer he saw the dead tailgunner and when he got closer he saw that the mid section gunners were either injured or trying to save other wounded crew members. 7/ Stigler wasnt part of the fighters that shot at the plane, they saw the plane fall and thought they had shot it down. Stigler was actually on the ground when the plane flew by having just come back from another mission 8/ Brown searched German records for 4 years but found no mention of the incident, for obvious reasons because Stigler never reported it. It was first when he put an ad in a german flying magazine that Stigler responded To me Stigler was a true hero and human who was in a war, but was still able to feel mercy

It is said that Stiegler, being himself an Ace with 27 victories in the air, recalled the words of one of his commanding officers of the Jagdgeschwader 27,( a fighter wing of the Luftwaffe famous for her participation in giving air support to the Afrika Korps) Gustav Rödel, during his combat period in North Africa that used to say: "If I ever see or hear that you shoot a man by parachute, I will shoot you myself." Stigler then commented, "To me, it was like they were in a parachute. I saw them and couldn't knock them down."

For me as a German, im so thankfull for People like Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown, because our Goverment will Teach us Germans that every German in the Years betweet 1930 and 1945 was a Nazi. Im thankfull that German Soldiers like Franz Stigler who sayd to his fellow Pilots in his Squadron, "If i see someone of you shooting an Enemy Pilot on a Parachute, unable to fight back, killing them, i swear you i will shot you down!" , show the Enemy that not all People in Germany are or were Bastards and only have to fight for the wrong Side.

I find German history incredibly fascinating because the Germans and Germany were always there, but at the same time not and always different like a shapeshifter. Oversimplified: Rejects Roman annexation - Teutons defeat Rome, are often slapped in the face, but Rome generally fails to subdue them Create an empire that wasn't really an empire but somehow lived for 1000 years - very special and unique The Kingdom of Prussia and hundreds of German States gangsta! Before being defeated by one of history's greatest generals. defeat the French, unites into a new empire Get a colonial empire Fight Europe alone and almost won.. Is treated badly Comeback as Villian, fights the whole world again and only lost because of own mistakes Gets divided again Reunites again and is not allowed to be strong again. Also a few German inventions: - Incandescent lamps (Heinrich Göbel 1854) - The Telephone (Johann Philip Reis 1859) - The dynamo and tram (Werner von Siemens 1866) - The 35 mm camera (Oskar Barnack 1925) - Nuclear fission and atomic bomb (Otto Hahn - emigrated to the Americans during Nazi Germany, of course.. Are they lucky that we exist - 1938) - The ship chart (Jürgen Dethloff and Helmut Gröttrub 1969) - Periodic Table (Julius Luther Meyer 1864) - Jeans (Levi Strauss 1873) - The recorder, player - with which the first films were possible (Emil Berliner 1887) - The Aspirin - Which all great athletes felt used to relieve pain, And which saved countless lives (Felix Hoffmann, Klausi Alder.. 1879) - Spark plug (Robert Bosch 1902) - Thermos flask (Reinhold Burger 1903) - the toothpaste (Ottomar Heinsius von Mayenburg) - The coffee filter (Melitta Bentz) - Cassette recorder (Fritz Pfleumer 1928) - Teabag (Adolf Rambold 1929) - The jet engines - Essential for all jets and rockets + First war rockets V1, V2 of the Nazis (Hans von Ohain 1929) - First rocket (general) - The helicopter (Heinrich Focke 1936) - The first car (Carl Benz - With honorary Schnauzer - 1886) - First Computer (Konrad Zuse 1941) - First 3D film (during the Nazi period) - Fanta (Yes the Fanta.. Also during the Nazi era) - The typewriter (Peter Mitterhofer - 1869) - NASA (actually the US buys thousands of German engineers to build NASA because they can't do it themselves) Well, as you saw, we changed world with our inventions many times. Where we would be today without the German thinkers art. Germany the land of poets and thinkers - that's how it is known. The problem is that many Germans are not proud of their country and blood, unfortunately also because they were brought up that way. Because if you say anything to that effect, you will be called a Nazi. The problem is that many people don't have the right deep historical knowledge that people need to understand the world and and that only Hitler himself and his party were Nazis. Almost no German was a Nazi during the Nazi era. Also, any historian will tell you that the Allies, primarily the USA, created Nazi Germany and WWII because of the unfair Versailles Treaty. Germans were so depressed that it is unimaginable for us. They were seen as evil around the world as they were blamed for everything in World War I. And when you have 3 kids at home, no job, money is worthless and no food and water you will follow anyone who fixes it. Because that's what the Nazis did in the beginning - they fixed everything and gave the Germans hope again. No German at the time could have known that Hitler was so crazy. It's not as easy as we always think. Even in the Wehrmacht, only a few liked the Nazis. They were German soldiers dying for the country. the general German soldier, like my grandfather, had nothing to do with the Nazis and the Holocaust. You must consider this one army fought against the rest of the world. And if we are honest: what kind of "peace" could the general German soldier expect? What could have they expect after all the Nazi crimes and everyone thought that all German were evil Nazis. What "Peace" could they expect. These soldiers fought for their lives and German people against a planet. If even many of Hitler's own generals like Rommel (legend) or Stauffenberg knew that he was not quite right in the head. Then the normal people knew that even more. Many were manipulated and could do nothing about it. The Nazis were a small parasite not the Germans. Calling all German soldiers Nazis is like calling all American soldiers democrats because they were in power. We should be prouder of ourselves, after all, Germany has repeatedly fought against the entire world, one time under a bad regime. We made this modern world possible and maintain a reputation for perfection and quality. The hard-working German with perfection in his blood! Or rather, we once had this reputation. Today there is no longer a country of poets and thinkers. We are still occupied by the USA. And people are manipulated and have no prospects. A dark age. What I also find very interesting is that the Germanic people spread very far and are therefore the ancestors of many other people. Therefore, historians are not entirely sure how German the Germanic peoples were, but since they were the first to speak German and also created English, they were already German. In addition, the Germans were also the ancestors of the Vikings means Germanic mythology is almost identical to Norse mythology. Actually the same.

Just as a piece of information. The B-17 like most planes at the time are controlled by wires, no electronics. These planes are huge and controlling them when any control surfaces are damaged is a complete mental and physical workout fighting to keep it in the air and they’re not that maneuverable. So it literally took everything he had to be able to pull out of the dive, THEN he had to fight it again as he flew back to England with not knowing if this single enemy fighter was gonna shoot them down or not. Then landing. I’d say they were pretty lucky.

this will probably not only be my favorite sabaton song forever or at least for a very long time but probably my favorite story of ww2 because the thing people never think about in war is even if one side is clearly in the wrong like the German army in ww2 granted most of them didn't know the atrocity's that hitler and their homelands leaders were doing, or for a more recent example the war currently going on in Ukraine and how the Russian government is very much in the wrong but sadly enough the Russian army is mostly made up of a bunch of conscripts thrown into this war not knowing why and not wanting to do it very similarly to the German army in ww2, the story of Franz and Charlie is one of if not the best example of humans showing the good in humanity that we are all human and unnecessary bloodshed should be avoided at all costs because if franz had decided to shoot down that plane that day the lives of those on board that b 17 and all the children they would end up making that would go on to make children and so on wouldn't have become apart of this world and that beautiful bond that they ended up sharing wouldnt have come to pass anyway sorry for the ramble lol i love you reaction and thank you for reacting to this song ❤❤

You ought to check out Sabaton's "Night Witches." You'd like it if you liked this one. It's animated too -- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7-AopurqdHaqWg.html .
