First run VOD: • Miltank VS Tauros - In...
Challenge Rules:
- I can only use my starter in battle.
- No items in trainer battles except held items.
- No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
First playthrough:
- No Double Team until level 100
- 31 IVs across the board
Second Playthrough:
- All bets are off. Complete the game as fast as possible
- Max 31 IVs unless pursuing Hidden Power
- The option of a single egg move
- I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

These two are really similar, in typing, approach to routing in the first run at least, but the egg moves, and the abilities made a small difference which kept this video really interesting in terms of final results.😊 I kept guessing who would win in the end, but I guess that Whitney chose the right pokemon 😂😂😂. I really liked the editing on this one quite a lot. I can only guess that it took a lot of effort and energy to get everything in place. Well done 👏👏👏 By the way the Ravenclaw poster is really cool.😊

Eggcellent sir, eggcellent (feels like a long time since I typed that one). I won't comment on the 1st runs as we talked about them during the live stream. your new formatting for the VS is interesting, really shows off how they compare almost in real time and I liked it. it was a touch hard to follow at times, my eyes tend to rest on one side or the other and I miss certain things as a result. I will get used to it though, its a good move especially for showing off the big battles for splits and the almost race feel of it at the very end in the R1 and R2. lets talk your optimizations. Tauros was interesting, body slam is such a good move and one we so rarely see so it was good to see. the lack of coverage for much of the run until water pulse was added was didn't make it easy of course but it seemed to do well with just the OP STAB set. water pulse was a nice touch over icy wind as an answer to the many onixeseses. I was a little surprised as to Tauros losing (if only by a little) to Miltank, but here's the thing with Tauros, we assume its a monter because of it dominance of Gen 1; no recharge on hyper beam after a KO and a better special stat of 70 before the special split and of course earthquake hitting all poison types including the ghosts. if Gen 3 had all that, it would be just as dominant. it did well without all of that though. The miltank on the other hand was a surprise, I always underestimate its speed and its bulk and despite the lower attack than Tauros, its STAB does make it a menace in its own right. I am surprise rollout and defense curl didn't get a showing but with curse from the off I am not shocked that was your main strat. rollot with curse, might of made Lance easier, he is the lair with flyers and rollout is a decent stand in for rock slide. I do think Miltank had an unfair advantage when it came to moveset, it did seem to get a lot more options than Tauros and some very important and useful moves at that. overall it was superb and it ran very well and it deserves its win. It was a good VS and I liked that it was follow up to the live stream. I assume you will do something similar for the Gyraradis and Milotic VS we got on Tuesday. I am curious of something also for both the bull and the cow, why no double edge, I know you're not a fan of the recoil moves, much like Scott, but surely the added power for a single hit or 2 and getting a KO instead of a 2 shot might of been beneficial and save a reset or 2 along the way. Good news, Blastose stomped the R1 and R2. a few problems with Lorelei as a result of damage ranges with my weak HP electric and brick break, but my rare candies sorted that. earthquake, surf and ice beam with brick break and HP chop and change for R1 and the same again for R2 except I had Hydro Cannon for the R2, I like the big finisher moves like that, especially when arcainine was almost always the last sent out.

Thank you, thank you. It does feel like a long time, I said the same thing combining over the Squirtle chat :P I completely agree, especially when the footage was being accelerated. You know me, I'm always critiquing myself and finding ways to improve but playing with the new format has been a lot of fun. I'm concerned though that the first runs will continue having to be played locally instead of on stream. Visual quality definitely dropped with the stream footage. It's true, for how dominant Tauros was in Gen 1 it felt very lacking in Gen 3. Especially a year ago on my first crack at it. I honestly feel though that if I were to play 2 more times with each the win/lose would be 3/2 in one direction or the other. They felt so closely matched, even from a play standpoint. I was really tempted to go with Defense Curl/Rollout and maybe that's something I'll have to revisit in Miltank's rerun a year from now! Miltank was surprisingly sturdy pretty much all the time. That's the plan, anyway, with the Gyara/Milo video. I'm definitely taking lessons along the way, as I mentioned above. I've had recoil moves on my mind since playing Infernape. I always feel so restricted in moveset that carrying a heavy hitting move that I can't use every turn makes my brain get a little scrambly trying to balance it all. Ahhh there's something deeply satisfying with ending on a big finisher move like that. I'm always so deterred from them because I just think.. 150 BP/2 turns = 75 power/turn. Surf is 90 on each turn, but yeah when you're getting a key knockout the extra damage is totally worth it. I'm too stubborn maybe. That's true with the events moves. They are very much outdated. I was doing a touch of looking into the Eeveelutions the other night and I was so disappointed to find out that so many of them learn Calm Mind in later gens but none of them learn it in 3. Shame. I suppose you don't really have a way of getting Growth Eevee since you play on actual hardware though right? With Skarmory, yes. I was wondering about some cheesy Curse/Agility strats but Drill Peck is so tempting. We'll see how that one goes :P Yeah that level of Pickup starts feeling abusive. The fact that they nerfed it so hard from what it was in RS to FR is a big reason why I have no problem using it. It's rare that I'm lacking berries in the first place, and there are tons on the map that I still need to learn the locations of. Sunkern, though ridiculous, was still usable. I feel like there are runs that would be harder than Sunkern, simply because of circumstance. I've been keeping an eye out for Thief more lately in my runs and it's funny that you mention how everyone learns Thief when I've been sad more times than not that it's not even on the table. Maybe I'm just happening to run a bunch that really don't have any use for it and I'm ignoring it. Either way, Mimic strats with Venusaur are awesome. I'm so happy that I was able to find a use in my run I think we discussed Mimic options first like.. I don't know. Many months ago :P

@@Eggsceptional to be fair with the quality of the stream, you almost always have a tech issue of some kind, it's apart of the drinking game for that reason after all, so video quality between the stream and the optimized local run is fair enough and yes you do critique yourself too much, you really don't need to, we like your content the way you do it, thats why we keep coming back to it. there is one particular advantage to this new format for your VS, the video doesn't have to be 2 hours long to do both Mons justice and it doesn't need as many switches from one to the other so we can keep track of how they are running much more easily. don't get me wrong I like a longer video, I rewatch many of them in the background during my own runs and when playing Elder Scrolls or something similar. Tauros suffered a lot between the Gens, in Gen 2 it wasn't so bad as it got the standard curse/return/rest/sleep talk set that everything got and it still got earthquake for the ghosts but Gen 3 absolutely stripped it of all of those options. I think you'd like it in Gen 4, the physical special split did it some good, but power creep still kept it down. the rollout strat would be interesting to see in the future. I do hope you keep defense curl/rollout strats in mind for future runs where it is an option, it helped Shuckle after all and that thing was quite hopeless, imagine that combo on something like Amumarill or golem that make the most of them. I think if you ran both of them for 50 runs each, it might end up being 51/49 for Miltank for the win, the sheer luck of RNG would determine so much between the 2 of them. I tend to hold back on teaching the hardest hitting moves until the very end for that reason. in my blastoise run, I had water pulse right up until the R1 league purely because I knew I didn't need anything harder until then and even then it was only surf and then waterfall for R1 and post game, these middling moves with good PP are best for runs as you have the PP to just push through sections of the game and then save the biggest moves for the R2, especially if they are move tutor moves like double edge and can only have them the once. you get that with rock slide, once you teach it, you are not lose it. there is a certain amount of math that helps with the big moves. the base 75 hits twice but the damage ranges vary and both could hit at the lower end and potentially not KO but the base 150 only hits the once and even at a lower range could still do more damage than the 2 combined lower range 75 base moves (if any of that makes sense). I don't know if these are the things that Scott considers but you see where I'm coming from with this (I hope). I think espeon gets calm mind via calm mind but it would make more sense for it to get one via level up. I think it was meant to pair off with Umbreon in that sense as Umbreons boosting move double team is also TM only. calm mind would be awesome on Gen 3 Eevee's, but at the same time I still have to consider move pool, STAB special, special HP and bite is what most of them get except Vaporeon which gets ice moves and umbreon gets psychic, none are eggsactly the greatest special users even with a boost. it is a shape so many of those unique event moves are before locked in what is left of the legit Gen 2 cartridges, I'll never have any of them as a result. I am curious of something though, if in theory you did a Growth Eevee VS with all 5 eeveelutions, what HP's would you go for for each of them, I imagine I can guess some of them. drill peck AND curse would be interesting on Skarmory, I am not sure if you can legit breed one with both though, there are some combinations of egg moves that never meet (unless you can use a smeargle as the father of course, then you can have any combo). dual STAB with curse and agility would be a nasty combo though, I might have to try that myself in Ruby when I do my sandstorm team run (rock, ground and steel types only team). its a hard one to call if there will be harder runs than Sunkurn as you figured the RNG almost perfectly for it and accounted for everything in order to make it with sheer trial and error, sunkurn had its faults as any Mon will but it at least had a movepool to work with, others will have worse options. Early game unevolved bugs for a start, Magikarp of course, shedinja might be impossible, you will have harder runs in time. thief is so very handy for a run, it can be useful despite the low power, especially for misty as its super effective damage at a time in the came where there is little other options is very useful. I think of it more as a utility move like dig or a HM move; its there to be helpful for acquiring useful rare items. the magnet I got to give my blastoise in the last run was acquired using my lead dig meowth with theif, other items like soft sand from sandslash or twisted spoons from abras are too useful to ignore just because of how you get them. and yes we did chat about mimic, it was some months ago, I forget which Mon we were talking about giving it to though, there wasn't with a poor move pool that needed it for the R2. I have news, before I finish the starters and move onto Charizard, Raichu and Clefable, I intend to do something we talked of a while ago. I am going to test Special Parasect again the R2. I have bred a near perfect one for the task (took 50 tries and a lot of testing to find the right one). it has near perfect special attack IV's, a quiet nature (plus special minus speed), EV trained perfectly for special attack and HP, a decent HP ice and psybeam as an egg move. I will get it to level 90 and then test it against the Charizard R2 champ team and report back, if it fails, I will try the other champ teams. its going to be rough but worth trying for the LOL's. something else I saw, Scott did a birthday stream and tried butterfree in fire red again, this time with substistute and he seemingly gave up and failed, if he was in the chat with them I would of told him how you did it, his total disregard for silver wind omniboost strats and HP really didn't do him any favors, I think we need to convince him to use HP in fire red more. after all it worked for you and I tested a load of them to see which was best (water by far)

@@jptheflipper3825 I critique myself only with the goal of improving. I don't let myself get to.. myself? I see a problem, I think about it, I think of a solution, I decide if it's worth the time, or I write it down for the future. That's my process in everything. I've definitely had some thoughts about the split screen, and have a touch of design to do before working on the Gyara/Milo release. That's something I've been considering for stream content is revisiting old runs, re-ranking other Pokémon like the Gen 3 starters, and any of the others sitting at the bottom of the list. It's so true. That's assuming Curse strats. We haven't tested DC/Rollout yet :D That's fair enough, holding onto TMs as long as possible has a lot of benefits. Especially when you don't know what problems might pop up ahead. I've been trying to find a runner that might benefit from a recoil move (outside of Rock Heads). 25% of the moveset is tough :P Oh man, I'd have to take some time to think about that. Once I'm ready to tackle the Eeveelutions I'll put more time into that whole thought process but there are some other runs I want to tackle first. That's true, but with the exception of Shuckle I haven't given 2 moves at the start of any runs. Skarmory doesn't feel weak enough to justify :P That said, it might be a fun thing to tackle on stream or something one day. After the release so we have a comparison point, and I have some eggsperience. Thief is super nifty. After I'm through Viridian Forest though my goal is to never fight a wild battle again. Usually. I may have to find some weaker 'mons to run when I'm over the punishment of Sunkern :D Yeah!! I hope that you EV training went well I know you were enjoying that process during the stream. Parasect.. What a monster. That actually sounds like an incredible Parasect, especially considering you did it the hard way. Long way. More rewarding way? I'm looking forward to hearing about the pain. It's true, the omniboost cheese definitely saved Butterfree's bacon. I think that the omni, even without HP might be enough to get through with a touch of good luck. Even so, I'm not giving up HP. I will show Scott the power of the dark side.

@@Eggsceptional I can't see much that needs working on for the split screen, squeezing everything is a trouble fair which will reduce the screens we are watching but I think a certain amount of that can be boiled down the bare essentials live updating stats, current moveset, etc. a can imagine a certain amount of aesthetics, the blending of the 2 colour schemes of the 2 being run in a ying yang type thing, but aside from that I think you got it looking good and it is something we will get used to in no time, the longer you use a split screen the more we are used to it. rollout strats are fun, if I have access to them in a run, any run in any game, I use it because I know the power that can come with it. as you found with Shuckle for example, the power of that thing once rollout got going was surprising despite its overall pathetic weakness. I think miltank will go well with it, in Gen 2 it was what made it a menace after all. I think if you re-rank anything, you should start with the oldest videos, as you would of learnt the most since them. I mentioned in the chat about trying Kyogre and Groundon for your doubles format paired with castform. could be one way of testing them with what you've learnt and gives you a chance to play with the weather strats a little more. there are some runs where that is hard to avoid of course, in most runs, I try to use Mons that learn a lot of decent TM's that can be purchased or HP of course if I can find them or one with a good enough level up set that using the move relearner is good option. you'll find that with the Nidos for both physical and special as a lot of there moveset is purchasable (although expensive) TM's and a few good level up moves. the recoil moves in Gen 3 are a touch more limited and less of an issue at least, its rare to see take down on a set and double edge with few exceptions is move tutor. quite a lot get rock head and you could in theory do a VS with all of them without it being massive, Rhydon, Golem, Aggron, Marowak and I think Steelix all get it as an ability. but I think we talked on that one already a while ago. Gen 4 will give you more to work with, especially Heartgold and SoulSilver where head smash is an egg move for many. That's fair, the Eevee's will be a big one when the time comes and will need a lot of thought and planning. I would say backport Leafeon and Glaceon for giggles as well, but despite the proposed Growth or Curse, both would suffer in fire red. the lack of the physical/special split would hurt leafeon and pure ice is a bad type for this game. thats fair with Skarmory, 2 would be a bit much, choosing which one though is tricky, as your options for flying moves aside from drill peck are peck and fly (not the best), but saying no to curse I know is not easy for you, but remember, without your speed, a sub might cause more harm than good as you might not be able to keep it set up long enough to set up enough. your defense on Skarmory is already good and with dual STAB and a decent HP you should have power enough to KO most of the game without a boost. thats fair with thief, I think it will be needed for special chan when the time comes to run it, I made use of thief on it for the whole run and used it to get my boosting items for the punches, I even spent time looking for a R1 nevermeltice from wild Dewdongs and magnets from Magnatons. it was long, but it was needed, base 35 special attack needs something to help it and items like wise glasses and choice specs didn't exist yet after all. This next one is a lot but its useful: My EV training went very well, it was perfectly EV trained by the end, 252 in special attack and HP and 4 in special defense for shits and giggles. I took on the R2 early and went in at level 85. I had resets on everyone, it was a matter of waiting on the RNG to some extent as I needed Lorelei's Dewdong to stay asleep long enough to set up 3 growths and then sweep with giga drain. I then lost giga drain for HP ice for the rest of the league. I needed bruno to not reduce my speed as despite having 61 speed I still outspeed the Steelix and most of the team and I again needed 3 growths to sweep with psybeam and HP ice. Agatha was tricky as the AI seemed to notice my chesto berry every time I had one equipped and never tried to sleep me so I had to wait for Hypnosis to miss and sleep and set up and sweep. I did find out that Crobat will not KO with air cutter at 86 which was nice, good to see my decent defense IV's and massive HP payed off. Lance was pretty much the same, I needed 5 growths to KO the Kingdra but I don't think I needed them as Kingdra when awake will almost always go for at least 2 DD before attacking. and get ready for this, Aerodactyl does NOT KO with aerial ace and Dragonite does NOT KO with flamethrower. it seems HP EV training is more effective than we give it credit for and here's the thing my HP IV was very low, maybe 8 or 9 out of 31 at most, so imagine that maxed with max EV's. the champ is where the challenge began as HP ice and Psybeam is not the best for the champ team and needed a lot of miss luck, a lot of sleep luck and minimum 4 growths for a chance. Tyranitar and Alakazam were the worst as the lack of super effective damage against these monsters give them time to hit hard or set up and allow the sandstorm to chip way too much. the sandstorm had its use as leftovers covered it for a while and it still chipped the sleeping opponents. and here is the real kicker, fire blast from the Charizard at level 88 barely doesn't KO. next type you a hard run where you need to take a lot of hits may I suggest HP EV training, it works. somehow this special parasect got from the league at 85-88, thats 10 levels lower than physical parasect and without sub strats. I think with Scott with fire red and HP we need to get him to test it at the least to see if nothing else, if he get a better time and a consistent better time with HP than without, because thats what he cares about, the consistency, if you guys used my rule of allowing yourself a single TM10 that you can use after beating the innocent bystander and thus getting to where Meowths are, I think you could get that consistency. Also I noticed something with your Meowth army, you only catch 4 and you go down to 3 once you have your 2 HM slaves. I tend to keep a full army of 5 right up until I have beaten Sabrina AND Koga and have done the safari zone. again it might be worth a try as it will increase your pickup rate, more rare candies, nuggies and TM10's

@@jptheflipper3825 That's true, but there are also things that I can implement to make the viewing experience better. Like more cuts instead of footage accelerations, because it makes the opposite side that isn't in a static battle go a little crazy/flashy. Very true, and being able to mess about with some weather strats sound a-ok to me with a Castform/Lego pairing. I was thinking that'd be good stream content in the coming weeks to re-rank a bunch of old runs. There are... so many that need some love. For sure, I was looking more into that Aggron/Steelix run that we'd discussed forever ago. Heavy Metal I believe I called it :P I would like to find a use case for recoil moves outside of Rock Head users though. STAB Double Edge could seriously wreck stuff, but it would also wreck my Pokémon. Good point with the Eevees, but for any backports I'd have to reach out to my expert :P I think so too with Skarmory, and I can even cheese things up a little and go with say, Curse/Agility with no Sub (maybe). 10 turns of set up per battle doesn't sound rough at all! Base 35 special hurts Hitmonchan so much before the phys/spec split. I'm not convinced that special chan is the quicker route :P That's really interesting, maybe another fun stream video would be running Parasect with optimal EVs to see what happens. I find myself wondering what's more important.. Atk/SpA or SpD for those Fire Blasts :P It's true, but I don't like visiting the boxes to swap Pokémon around and once I have access to Fly, Pidgey is permanent. In my optimized runs I only go to 4-5 centers throughout the entire playthrough, including the leagues because there's enough heals in between to not need them.

As did I! I didn't make the connection to Ground for many, many years either. Jo-vanni would be more Italian, but I feel Geo-vanni fits the Rocket boss better :)

Diseggpointed it's not Stardew, eggcited for Pokemon. I'm really yolked up about this shell of of a split. On one side, I want to continue my own Stardew game I'm matching pace with you and on the other side I love the Pokemon runs. I'll just have to keep things sunny side up and enjoy it all the same. And just to clarify, I'm not actually disappointed. This is a joke.

If it helps, I have played through Spring of Y2 in Stardew :) That content will absolutely keep rolling, but it's a simple fact. FR gets me more views, and I can't afford rent if all I upload is Stardew unfortunately. I just need more time in a day!

No rollout for milktank for the first run? Thought u might wanna play around with whitney strats for the first one to show the dominance of that milk cow, jokes aside, this run is overall good and I like the HP type u have decided for both pkmn. Some things that I can see to slightly improve the plays, mainly for Tauros though. I know Tauros low 40 base Sp.Att deters from using special moves but honestly, having blizzard or ice beam for the lance fight will just make 3 hit KOs become possibly 2 hit KOs for both aerodactyl and dragonite, and for R2 u can consider fire blast instead of EQ for steelix since its sp. def is kinda low, that optimizes TM usage and saves EQ for more flexibility for the champion battle, heck maybe investment into some calciums could work out if going this particular route. Maybe I should take tauros for a test run and see if this kind of works out

I was tempted to Defense Curl/Rollout strats but I figured that Curse and punch would be better. I could be wrong! It's true, Tauros' SpA is garbage. Ice Beam/Tbolt were considerations of money - I simply didn't have enough without more grinding. Going for Blizzard/Fire Blast felt like it would ultimately confuse my strategy that I'd come up with. A ton of hot swapping moves tends to make the leagues feel incredibly messy for me, but hey! It's still a 40 min improvement from last year!

Milktank is still annoying when you fight it but when you have Milktank on YOUR team its LESS annoying then the actually Gym fight and that's because most of YOUR Milktank's learnable moves nearly ALL of them SUCK.

Honestly I loved Miltank's movepool. Compared to Tauros' at any rate :P It always feels like a much more formidable opponent than ally though I do agree...

Jovanni? That makes no sense... like the name is spelled like "GEO"vanni because he's a ground specialist and it's mentioned as "GEO"vanni in the anime. Everyone's also called him that way sense the series first came out, including guys like Marriland. Dunno what your viewers are talking about, my dude... While I like Miltank, I can't help but root for Tauros, definitely one of my favorite normal types. This run was very moooving.

For a proper Italian pronunciation, I guess :P He's Geo in the anime, that's what I'm sticking with! I'd wager if I did 2 more runs each it would be 3-2 these two were wicked close
