Tawny owl attacks pied wagtail nest filmed from the observatory at Clover cottage www.isleofmullcottages.com/clo...
One of the nest cams captured this dramatic footage of the incident.
There are a number of cameras set up in the observatory to record the surrounding wildlife, including one under sea camera too. Guests can monitor the isle of Mull's wildlife in comfort and see special moments such as this.

The bird equivalent of Adult Fear with a touch of paranoia fuel. You're out one night to fetch food for the chicks while your mate/wife tends to them, and when you get back home with dinner/supper they're all gone and no trace of what happened and where they went.

We regularly have wagtails nesting at our cabin in the woods. They've found a small access hole just under the eves. No owl could get in there.

It's harsh when a nest is predated, but we gotta understand that it's nature doing what it does best. What annoys me about predation, is when it's a cat that does it! A non-native animal and it don't eat the life it has just taken, it merely leaves it to rot. One thing I myself would never do no matter the case is underestimate the skills of a fantastic predator such as a tawny owl. Probably one of the most fantastic and interesting birds of the UK. Gotta admit tho...... What a silly place for a wagtail to build its nest! Right on the doorstep of death.

eastbelfastno1 Sometimes the predators dosen't need to hunt. Sometimes smaller birds came to their nest to check out if its habitable, they get inside, then owl came by and enter, and finally the smaller bird gets killed and eaten. It's happen but not quite often.

Crows I can't stand and starlings and English sparrows. Crows are over abundant, the other two are not native to our lands. So I hammer all three. To many cats and I'll help their numbers out too.

Well said Wildlife-crazy, every shrew, amphibian and vole a cat kills, puts more pressure on the rest of the wildlife, so owls have no choice but to predate the nests of other birds. Cats are an appalling imposition on the environment by humans.

One reason why birds have trouble finding good places to places their nest: WE remove the good places ie dead trees with crevices and holes because we want trees which grows fast and then can be felled, not trees with nooks/holes etc and which is old.

Not when there's a invasion of rats and mice. These birds are are a part of nature and doing what they need to do. They can be useful and it's sad how so many things people hate are actually useful.

Owls are an important part of the ecosystems. They eat other animals such as mice, snakes, large birds, etcetera. Without them we’d have mice problems everywhere. Cats are not a good solution for mice, they predate highly on the small bird populations, which damages the environment and makes bugs a problem for everyone living in the area.
