The Magical Town of the state of Guerrero - since 2002 - receives its name from the Nahuatl word tlacheco, which means-name of the ball game (tlacht) and the locative co, (place), that is to say "place where ball is played". The Alarcón suffix was added in memory of the writer and taxqueño Juan Ruíz de Alarcón y Mendoza.
Built on the hill, admirably managing to adapt to the slope, its historic center is a succession of squares and streets that gain height towards the hill. Stroll through its zocalo, browse the silver markets, enter the goldsmiths' workshops on Avenida San Agustín, try the jumiles or iguana tamales in the restaurants, learn about its mining past, or see Taxco from the top of the cable car they whet their appetite on their visit.
History of Taxco
Taxco de Alarcón, or simply Taxco gained importance as a mining center in colonial times. The exploitation of the silver mines gave prominence to the city. And the jewelry goldsmithing was forged as an artisan tradition in the 18th and 19th centuries.
However, long before it was an area controlled by Matlazincas, Chontales and Tlahuicas, just like Cuernavaca. The territorial expansion of the Mexicas or Aztecs made Taxco the main settlement of one of its seven tributary provinces.
