The 50th Anniversary AD14ce-SB LTD embodies five decades of Taylor history. The Sitka spruce /walnut tonewood pairing traces back to Bob Taylor’s earliest guitars, many of which were crafted in the humble workshop that gave the American Dream Series its name. That combination yields a warm, woody midrange response with clear projection and articulation, enhanced with improved volume and sustain thanks to the V-Class bracing inside. Following the distilled, neo-vintage design ethos of its American Dream counterparts, this limited-edition model features chamfered body edges, clean Italian acrylic dot inlays, a firestripe pickguard and a thin matte finish with a hand-sprayed tobacco sunburst top treatment. This highly versatile Grand Auditorium includes a commemorative interior label and ES2 electronics. It ships with a lightweight, yet super-durable AeroCase.

That guitar records through a mic amazingly. Very even, woody, earthy tones with lots of sparkle. Man, as someone who is just so tired of Taylor as a brand (sorry I said that out loud), that just sounds great.

my favorite Taylor 10 years ago was the 514-ce. Over the years Taylor has made changes to the top to enhance the sound, remember the 810 WMB, wood binding, more BASS. They routed a small valley under the top all the way around near the edge to allow the top to move more, they claimed. Then the V class bracing. And Martin D-28 still using the same bracing they have used for many years.

Taylor has certainly "made it", but by making their niche the guitar company that innovates, they are perhaps the first acoustic guitar company to have sustained for so long without any iconic models. The 800 series should be that, but they've changed it so much and you'll never see Taylor reissue something. If they were going to do that, this would be the prime opportunity. But it's no surprise, It goes against their market focus of positioning themselves as the innovator. They intentionally, shamelessly, devalue their previous generation of product. I guess truthfully, their best seller, the GS Mini is the real icon of their line. It is a great guitar for the money. Buying an older Taylor is buying old technology. Once a new pickup, bracing pattern, body design change, finish option, etc.. comes into focus on a refresh of one of their series, the pervious year models in that series become worth less resell.... I love their GS Mini, 100-200 series. Even the 300 good guitar for gigging musician, you're plugged-in with a reasonably good pickup system. Play the hell out of it at gigs and the most you have to worry about is a bolt-on neck reset. A Taylor 200 series offers great workhorse guitars at a great price. But the the ROI stops there for me... My ears hear a huge difference between a $4000 custom shop Martin dreadnought and say a D15, but with Taylor there's just not much tonal variance going above the 300 series. I really wish Taylor would just expand the 100 and 200 series, offer more body shapes, offer the V-Class bracing as an upgrade, offer pickup system upgrades, etc... Uncharge as needed The acoustic guitar is an instrument the best players in the world would tell you peaked during the golden war time era with C.F. Martin. That's why good specimens from that era can sell for over $100k It's an instrument based on tradition and the closer a builder can get to that transition the better sounding and more desirable their guitars are.

Three years ago, flush with pandemic cash, Quinton’s playing of a Taylor sold me. It’s been a great friend that never ceases to amaze me, making me sound better than I am. I was introduced to the model at a local guitar shop that I went into to buy a Martin. But it outshined the Martin that day on ease of fretting, ease of tuning, clarity of notes in jazz chords, and looks. It didn’t occur to me to worry about resale, or the past or future of the line, or its position in the market. I wanted it, expensive though it was, because it sang to me. And upon going home and doing research, I heard Quinton put it through its paces and went back to the store, credit card in hand. So … I hear what you are saying but I just wanted to point out that for me as a player, I’d rather loose a few bucks on resale value for a quality instrument that will never need to be resold while I’m around. And … this walnut American Dream sounds gorgeous as well and for a respectable price point. Just listen …

I agree with so much of what you say. I've owned three pre-V-bracing Taylors over the years: an 01, 08 and 13. When I tried the new v-braced Taylors I just couldn't get it. Something was so weird to me. I guess my older ears couldn't adjust. I never bought another but have had a few Martins and even a Maton since. At any rate, I was sort of wondering if the pre-V-class guitars would have increased in value as people may want them for the same reason as they just don't like the v bracing, especially if the guitars were in that small window of time when the ES2 began, from late 13 and after?

No, people buying a Taylor are after V-Class bracing... For the record, I'm not a fan of V-Class bracing either. I was able to A-B test both an 800 and 900 series V-Class to X-Class (both brand new) year V-Class was introduced... Objectively it has some advantages and some tradeoffs for tone. My issue with Taylor on V-Class bracing isn't the bracing itself, but that instead of offering customers V-Class or traditional X bracing as an option, they decided to force V-Class bracing across their entire USA lineup and they refuse to acknowledge that V-Class does come with some compromises over traditional X tonally. You're getting consistent volume, compression and note clarity (what Andy Powers calls intonation in this context ), but it comes at the sacrifice traditional decay, clang and I would say depth of tone you get from X-bracing.... Instead of giving customers the option, they take the new feature.and market it as innovative and without compromise. They've done the same thing in the past with their pickup technology and even the bolt-on neck joint that made them so famous. @@WSBM

@@rmzzz76 Thanks so much for that input. My late 2013 514ce (Cedar over Hog) has just an amazing tone with plenty of lows but still the Taylor sparkles. The cedar gets going very easily, too. I've tried a 514 and 8 series v class and I just couldn't get it. I'm in my 50's now and guess my taste in tone is kind of locked in. Got an OM28 in the last couple months and it just sounds ridiculous to me so that makes up for lacking the rosewood 814 sound I would have probably sought out. But still, as much as Taylor irritates me, the 514 I have is well, just ridiculous. But don't get me started on the ES2. It sounds pretty good but the pick (or finger nail) noise is louder than the music, even when you pull back a bit with the pickup posts. Can't win them all. My Maton, however, that pickup is the best one I've heard.

If one is to go down a guitar geek mine shaft, bracing has one of the richest veins. It colors the tone of the soundboard and over the years, there have been many patterns from ladder to Torres fan to arch to X to lattice to V. The advantage of the V sound, to me, is the clarity of a four or five part chord. As I learned jazz on a piano, that is a sound I lean toward. But it isn’t a big strumming thing, and there are often muted notes involved with moveable chords. Yet the 60s musicians I grew up listening to and wanting to emulate all played Martins and that sound is indelibly stuck in my ears. Hello darkness, my old friend … Fortunately, Music Villa sells both and, by the way, sold me my amazing Martin. I just defend Taylor because although it makes a wonderful and gorgeous product it frequently gets pounded to a pulp in comment lines.
