A couple years ago, we released a recording with Taylor Ashton, when he was traveling through Nashville for work ( • Taylor Ashton, "F.L.Y.... ). As a banjo player myself, I love seeing the instrument played in unique ways. Not "strum it like a guitar" unique, and definitely not "banjitar" unique. Someone who can take the classical techniques and pour them into a new mold, something contemporary, with inspiration springing from more than one field. Taylor does that, and is thus one of my favorite banjo playing songwriters around. He has the chops - he can play clawhammer as good as anyone i've had the pleasure of meeting, and sing like an angel. He chooses to be different with it, and I respect that, am inspired by it.
I can't recommend his split album with Courtney Hartman enough. If you like banjo music, you should listen to it. ( • Courtney Hartman & Tay... ).
You can find Taylor on Spotify at open.spotify.com/artist/53t38... and follow him on Instagram at @taylrashtn.
