I wonder if you could reload quicker with the percussion cylinder and paper cartridges, or the conversion cylinder. It doesn't seem like it would be that much of a convenience to me.
@duelist19543 жыл бұрын
You're right about that, but this type of conversion system wasn't used on real 19th century Colts. The real convenience was ammo that didn't fall apart, or get wet, that you could carry in belt loops or drop in your pocket.

I got out in the country yesterday with my Diana model 34 classic .22 air rifle and it was in the mid 30s with about 4 inches of snow on the ground that was slushy but not frozen and I had to drive in on top of the slushy snow and mud to the sand pit where I shoot so thankfully I drive an suv and thus I didn’t get stuck. I fired 3 shots from 25 yards away at a thin plastic gallon jug filled with water shooting 16 grain H&N hornet pellets and I hit the jug all 3 times with no misses and those hornets really tore up the jug. However because of the white snow and the glare of the 3pm sun and the opaqueness of the target using open sights I had difficulty focusing my sight picture on the target but I still managed to hit it with no misses all 3 times I fired at it

That was totally my fault. I slipped and slid up to the berm and I took the target down without photographing it...just a mental lapse. I shot about the same size overall group as with the wadcutters, but the shots were more evenly distributed with the heel-based bullets.

Looks better than my video on it. I have no table, my hands full, am tapping on the cylinder with the barrel to shake cartridges out and picking up a stick off the ground to eject. I like these cylinders but the novelty quickly wears off when you have to keep taking the gun apart to reload. My Pietta is 20 years old, used and abused and I’m ready to have it gated and converted and reline the pitted up bore to .357. Love shooting black powder. My shooting area, as of last night, is flooded with about a foot of water down here in Louisiana. So you are in better shape than we are in terms of being able to shoot

Which heel base bullet mold did you use and were they as accurate as the HBWC ? I use .38 LC with lead HBRN bullets. The guy I bought then from years ago must have run out of pure lead and the last box of these bullets I reloaded were made with some alloy that was too hard. They were worthless in my 1851 with it's .375 barrel, but shot just fine out of my Uberti Open Top .38 with a .357 barrel. I hope to shoot some Hornady .38 HBWC that I reloaded with .38 LC brass with about 1/4" of the bullet protruding out of the case with the hollow base inside the case. I hope they work next week.

If you have a collection, people who love old guns, love cool watch.I for one would love to know. I loved your article on .36 over .44 to start shooting. I always tell people " If it was good enough for Wild Bill Hickok on a 75 yard shot it's good enough for me. I really want an 1861 next. That said I have an 1873 5.5 inch, brass grip frame, made by Uberti and 2 1858s, one engaged, both by Pietta. My favorite to shoot is the 1851 by Pietta. Technically, it shouldn't be used in a brass-framed gun. You'll void your warranty if you do. Actually the cylinder will do fine but you'll probably stretch your frame in short order. If you do stretch the frame, and you continue to shoot it with the conversion cylinder you'll have problems because the back plate is going to move around under recoil.

Would you recommend the Taylor's conversion for the 1851/61 after your experience with it so far? @duelist19543 жыл бұрын
That is a steel framed gun. Only the trigger guard and back strap is brass. When we say brass-framed gun, we mean the main body of the gun, the receiver in rifle terms, is made out of brass. Like a Griswold & Gunnison, or what a lot of sellers call "Confederate" Navy revolvers.

It was good to see that the hollow base shot so well without keyholing. Did you cast both the hollow base and heeled bullets yourself? It's my understanding that you need to use pure lead for hollow base so that they expand, not the harder wheel weight alloy. Is that your experience?
@duelist19543 жыл бұрын
The hollow based were Winchester factory ammo. I do cast hollow based bullets. I use 20:1 lead to tin alloy.
