The cross stitched framed quote on the wall is by Cher. Her Mom said to her"Sweetheart, why don't you settle down and find a rich man?) Cher responded with "Mom, I am a rich man." Obviously a callback to when Women needed Men financially.

There’s the Cher quote nodding to The Man; Hayley Kiyoko shoots an arrow into a bullseye with 5 in the middle, which is a way of saying the 5th song on the album is The Archer; and Adam Lambert is tattooing Ellen with the name of this summer’s single from the album, Cruel Summer. There are probably even more nods to songs that I’ve missed, too!

Reputation era is right after the kimye drama when kim called Taylor a snake. So the tattoo of butterflies flying from the snake figure symbolizes her moving on from that era. She is phenomenal not just with her art but her reach and her impact. She's a conscientious role model who knows who she is and what her values are. You can disagree with her values but you can't deny that she is a good person at heart trying to do good.

I just noticed that the tattoo is a snake morphing into butterflies (this first happened in the Me! video - also from this album). Reputation album/era morphing into the Lover album/era "cuz shade never made anybody less gay" has a double-meaning, too. There's the obvious "throw shade" but also staying in the dark (closeted) doesn't make you less gay. I love how they're all calmly sunbathing while the protesters are freaking out in the shade. I always equated the scene of Burgers and French Fries as (BFF = Best Friends Forever/they made up) but I like the beef/salty analogy. (I blame my vegetarianism for never thinking of this.) You're a really good guide through Taylor Swift videos/lyrics because she has so many double-meaning phrases that can be hard to catch.

Ryan Reynolds is painting at the end. He is painting the Stonewall Inn. This video was made at the time of the 50th anniversary of the police riots there. Jessie Tyler Ferguson asked Taylor to preform at one of the parties for the Stonewall anniversary. Ryan Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively are some of Taylor's best friends. The trilogy about James, Inez and Betty are the names of their 3 girls. They have had another child since then. James is also at the beginning of Taylor's song Gorgeous. Taylor was playing the Lover album for Ryan and Blake before it came out and little James repeated repeated the word from that song. Taylor asked if she could record it for the song. I believe she has a songwriting credit for the Gorgeous song. She was a toddler. 😂

Love that you got so excited to see Hannah! 😂 Jessie Ferguson is there with his husband, Justin Mikita, being re-married by Ciara. The cameo list of this song is a mile long and brilliant, top to bottom. For example, when she says “can you not step on his gown” Billy Porter is walking down the protest line, and he frequently wears AMAZING dresses to awards shows. Pretty much every shot is like that - she did a great job co-directing this video.

The “step on his gown” lyric was with a cameo from Tony Award winning actor Billy Porter-who most people know him as “that guy who wore a dress on a red carpet” and made people inexplicably mad. He actually had worn a pink cape to the 2019 Golden Globes and because of the reaction to that, he reached out to Christian Siriano to make him a gown to wear to the 91st Academy Awards to challenge ideas of masculinity. So putting his cameo with the lyric, “Like can you just not, step on his gown, you need to calm down…” was the obvious choice. ❤

It feels like one of the motivations of including the scene reflecting a resolution of the Katy Perry/Taylor Swift “feud” in this song is to subtly acknowledge that she herself once took part in a little bit of social media warring and negativity where both of them probably needed to “calm down” and showing that growth and maturity can happen and people can choose to change and choose to reconcile and resolve issues and be respectful. I feel like this also takes this video out of just being just a video that is meant to be taking a shot back at people she disagrees with to perhaps being an attempt to model reconciliation and respect even where there is disagreement. I may be reading more into that but she could have chosen lots of situations to highlight a resolution with KP and she chose this video in the context of the message of this song.

I feel like you are definitely one of the better react channels. The line "shade never made anybody less gay," is one of my all time favorite lines of any song. My 70 year old mother and me in my 40s are the biggest swifties on the planet so if you say you are not her age group I am guessing you must not have listened to her albums at all.☺But music taste is a personal thing of course.

It probably isn't a generational gap. I am her target audience. Haha. At least in age and gender). She just doesn't resonate with me at all. I don't like the sound of the music and while some of her lyrics are clever, they just don't reach me. The struggles I have gone through are just a lot different. I really don't like much pop music at all either. (And yes, I have heard a decent collection of her different albums. I just don't like it). Nothing wrong with liking her or not. I just wanted to say that it doesn't have to be a generational thing. It is okay to say you just don't like her music. I don't know why people seem to think either you shouldn't say that, feel like saying you don't like her music means you also have to disparage her as a person or call her talentless, or why her fans always insist if you don't like her stuff you haven't heard enough of it. Love your breakdowns- you catch so many subtleties that others do not. Yes, Taylor definitely has bars! I love the ways she buries stinging social commentary and disses in the fun melodies. You end up bopping to it and then wham - heavy messaging! It’s like Eminem but in pop form.

Yep! She and Katy Perry buried that hatchet and put the past behind them. I’m not a huge Katy fan still but, I love Taylor for the way she can forgive people ❤ they still aren’t besties but, it’s really sweet the way they came together again. I also love that Taylor isn’t afraid to call out haters. This song is so fun and I love that she pulled together such amazing celebs for the video. ❤

Ok, I’m an older “Swiftie”, I have a few of her CD’s, I’ve watched a Livestream of one of her Eras Tour concerts, I bought myself one of her merch hoodies - but I’m not up on all the tea, all the Easter eggs, all the drama… You need to review every single one of Taylor’s music videos because it’s like a TS education! You seem so perceptive, and immediately get all of her references, you’re great at this!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 (I had watched this particular video a couple of times, but didn’t get even half of the things and cameos and lyrics meanings that you pointed out). WOW, learning about how you experience hate, and yes, TS she is really a very strong being to handle all that she deals with....I saw a couple other big stars IG accounts and I was stunned at the intensity of the meanness written at them - Taylor has comments turned off on her IG, no comments allowed :) smart girl!!.....some people just have dark damaged despairing souls and I guess need to project that outward to relieve themselves of their toxic self hate that they swim in all the time.......I think your reviews are amazing and I particularly appreciate that you go back a few seconds each time b4 beginning to play the song again!! Just because I haven't seen anybody else mention it, Katy Perry wore the burger costume to the Met Gala afterparty party in 2019, about 6 weeks before this video was released, and I remember the press articles and comments on the internet that severely ridiculed her for it. Katy looks sad and lonely until she spots Taylor dressed in the fries costume, and I interpret it as Taylor showing up for her like "if they come for you, they come for me too. Let everybody say what they will, we're just going to have fun".
