While in Spain filming for Badlands, one of the most epic ultracycling unsupported gravel races in the world, we had the chance to have a chat with Taylor Phinney, artist and former pro cyclist.
We went through his career, his old competitive mentality and training schedule compared to his renewed interest in exploring the outdoors on his custom Nemo Gravel without having a watch to check, and finally we spoke about his “ego-free” approach to cycling since he retired from professional racing.

I like how casually he talked about his mom and dad being bicycle racers. They were two of my heroes when I raced during the 80's. His mom, Connie, won the first women's Olympic road race held in 1984. His dad, Davis, got a bronze medal in the Olympic team time trial the same year and won two stages of the Tour of France later in his career. I briefly met them both and it was apparent that they were honestly nice people. Taylor sounds like he's found a life that works well for him. Good. Go, Taylor.

This was an awesome interview. When some cyclists retire and they don’t go into another job in pro cycling, like coach or running a team, they fall off the radar. It’s great to see him happy in what he is doing now and it’s on his own terms. Also this was an awesome shot video.

I've always liked the way he always seems to be having a good time. Is it just me though, does it sound like a "Spanish" rider being interviewed. His voice has definitely changed from the laid back American/English to more of a Spanish inflection.

I definitely detected a Spanish inflection in his voice too.

If by “Spanish” you mean he drank Ayahuasca that morning you are correct.

Cool that he decided to go his own way. Much respect. Sounds like classic burnout from early pressures of racing and training.

Probably fair to say that the significant injury to his leg had something to do with it too.

Love this!! I’m having a natural transition back to the cycling that I loved as a kid and the philosophy and approach Taylor describes is where biking is truly fun, sustainable and rewarding. Lycra clad, non-racers are now a puzzle to me. But the thing that’s great about cycling…each to their own. Keep these posts coming 🙏🏻

Great interview that actually got me to revalute some of the aspects of my relationship with cycling. Especially the community aspect; I used to ride mostly alone, now I try to connect with others and share the experience

Far out dude you figured out how to de tune yourself from the pro racing scene. So many x pros seem to have a hard time adjusting to life and just stopping to smell the roses on a ride. Well done bro! I left road and track racing to ride mtb enduro events witch are far more relaxed style of racing. Visiting Spain next year, will hit you up on one of your group rides. Cheers mate

The fact that Phinney is on a Cinelli old-school steel mountain bike frame, and not a slick carbon gravel bike, speaks volumes about this riding style and ex-professional outlook.

Competitive road cycling is highly physically demanding, risky and expensive. Racing costs money and unless you win and put everything on the line, there's no return. It also requires quite a bit of time to be able to dedicate to it. I can understand the frustration.

I used to think so too and there's also this component of him being privileged growing up and him being privileged to be able to be an artist, however I support this vision of finding joy on the bike and riding without always kitted up in racer mode and looking just like everyone else.
