There is always a track in Taylor’s albums that doesn’t stand out to me at the first hundred listens but slowly becomes my ultimate favorite. It was seven in Folklore and it is this song in Evermore.

"Now you hang from my lips like the Gardens of Babylon." Beautiful imagery Taylor, just beautiful. The way she not only uses the architectural aspect of things as a simile, but also due to the fact that the existence of the Hanging Gardens has been up to debate make the lyrics even more bittersweet. It's like the speaker is hanging on to the idea of it because if they don't, they'll lose the only thing that makes it real, turning it into just the imagination of the persona.

Your interpretation is beautiful, I really like it. I googled the hanging garden on wikipedia and i found this: According to one legend, the Hanging Gardens were built by the Neo-Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II, for his Median wife Queen Amytis, because she missed the green hills and valleys of her homeland. This story reminded me ''Just being in your arms takes me back to that little farm '' from Christmas tree farm, here taylor is referring to how her boyfriend makes her feel at home.

Everyone is talking about the Babylon line. But I find some other lyrics also really impressive like "but i said dancing is a dangerous game", it makes me think that she's a con artist, she knows exactly how vulnerable people can become once they fall in love, and dancing is an activity that can make people feel so in love.

“Now I’m waiting by the phone like I’m sitting in an airport bar.” When you’re sitting in the airport bar waiting for the boarding to start. Anxious, alerted, not to miss the flight. Listening to every announcement. And the same happens when we’re just falling for someone. Everytime our phone rings we run to it hoping that it’s that person! Alerted, anxious.

"But that was all before I locked it down" She sings it in a way that makes you feel like she's absolutely smug about it. There's this feeling, of utter satisfaction when someone is yours, your person. No matter how much other people may want them, none of them can possible have them. Not because you're holding them with a chain, but because they want you to have them, and in return, you want them to have you. This song tells the journey of wanting someone, to reaching them, and to having them. She says how men wanted her and women wanted him, but that was all in the past, that it was before they were each other's. And that feeling definitely deservers a level of smugness. You can't see her face, but you can tell that she's probably smirking while singing this, almost whispering into the mic, before she seals her lock and hold the key.

From what I know of the story, the gardens were said to float in the desert, like a mirage. However, when you got close enough, you could see that it actually hung from a building owned by the fancy ruler you mentioned. The building just blended into all the sand and the heat, in a way that you could only see the gardens from distance, giving the illusion it floated above the ground. Therefore, this line could mean two things: his love for her is an illusion, not truly there, just a mirage like the gardens; or he's in love with her, but no one knows -- if he's the gardens, she's the building no one knows it's there. Either way, it's a beautiful line, and its multiple interpretations just goes to show her writing is too complex and layered to be nailed down to a single interpretation. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

@@kaya3441 gardens of babylon was one of 7 wonders of the world where each buildings during the babylonian empire has terraces full of plants, which make them look like they're 'hanging'. so the line is pretty much self explanatory; the name is hanging from her lips just like the gardens of babylon..

@@kaya3441 Psyche Lover in comments explained it the most beautiful away "Now you hang from my lips like the Gardens of Babylon." Beautiful imagery Taylor, just beautiful. The way she not only uses the architectural aspect of things as a simile but also due to the fact that the existence of the Hanging Gardens has been up to debate make the lyrics even more bittersweet. It's like the speaker is hanging on to the idea of it because if they don't, they'll lose the only thing that makes it real, turning it into just the imagination of the persona.

This song made me a Taylor Swift fan. Her ability to communicate the human experience into song is special. Evermore was the first album I heard, the maturity in the songs, the heartbreak she can convey was surprising to me. The choice to not always right autobiography was truly a great gift to the music world. The woman has worked so damn hard, this music is a testament to the life she lived, and the heart she has for others. It's been a heartbreaking year for my family and this album was the soundtrack to some of the most felt moments of my life. Everyone can groove to shake it off, but the complexity of emotions that I now see trickled though her albums, well it's always been there. Can't say enough, thank you Taylor for somehow understanding the ache I feel in my chest right now...and how I will know when it's time to go. love.

Just when you think she wouldn't be able to deliver anything surpass folklore for a while...There's something so tender, so quietly heartbreaking, surrendering yet incredibly hopeful & mischievous in the melody / lyrics. Quite possibly my favourite Swift song ever.

I know I'm way late now but I just had to comment because this is such a beautiful song. And obviously everyone's what there getting from the song can be different. What makes this song so beautiful is that it's a song about two people. Who aren't really lucky in love or maybe more so they felt like they never would be lucky to ever find real love. Or that sadly that they both felt like they didn't deserve love. Like everyone else and somehow they knew when they meet that was going to be it for them. Basically summing up to keep it short two broken people who finally find love with each other. They finally get that and deserve it more than ever Taylor Swift is amazing for this song.

There's a rumour going around that a third sister album is in the works so idk. If she posts "not a lot going on at the moment", just know that an album is coming 😭😭 Edit: she debunked the woodsvale rumours 😭😭
