As a long time fitter there are a couple of things I have to explain to people when they just say it's because of the lower lofts. 1. Are we getting equal height with your old clubs of the same number (ie: 7 iron). 2. Is the descent angle similar to your older clubs? 3. Don't focus on lower spin rate as you are 30 yards longer which means you wouldn't be hitting that club to achieve the same distance as your older clubs. If your gamer 7 iron goes 180 and this one goes 210 it is safe to say you wiould hit 3 clubs less. That would put your spin # back in the same range. Essentially, the huge majority of golfers will benefit from modern technology. Higher, longer and straighter.

Unfortunately some ‘fitters’ at golf retailers don’t seem to get this either. Testing is best done with similar lofted clubs to get a valid comparison of launch angle, height, carry, descent angle etc but many seem to want to do 7i vs 7i even when there is 4-5* difference so they can push a sale based solely on distance gains.

This was really interesting and has me thinking of the possibilities of a frankenbag. I'm imagining replacing my 5 iron with this 7 iron, my 4 with this 6, and maybe even my driving iron with the 4 iron. I don't care what numbers are on the bottom of the club, I care about the distance I hit it (including gapping) and if I can keep it in play. If I can hit better long shots with GI mid-irons then I wouldn't care that I have 2 x 7 irons and 2 x 6 irons in my bag. I think this has inspired me to test some GI irons out on the simulator and see how they perform for me. Thanks guys!

My coach does this. he plays blades down to 5 iron and then he has a second 5 iron that's a 2nd Gen SIM 2 game improvement iron and a 4 iron that's a SIM 2 iron as well. His driver SS is about 112mph too so he has some speed but doesn't shy away from this setup at all.

I played a round with this set and agree with your points. For a 64 year old it gave me the yards back I lost without compromising to much in other areas. I am more accurate hitting a 7 to a 155 flag than a 6. May not be for everyone but it is the fountain of youth for me. 😊

Just bought a set....played one round...much improvement on getting shots out of the rough, solid feel on all shots, a hell of a lot more forgiving on mishits, but also allow me to shape shots, when needed. BTW, on my other irons, I was lucky to hit a 7 iron over 150 yds. With the Stealth irons, I can use a 7 to get me to 170-180 yds.

Great video, guys. For the record I had a partial re-fitting last Wednesday to replace my Irons and take away my existing 5 & 6 Irons for a 5 Hybrid. I am 64 years of age and 25 Handicap. I was fitted for Taylormade Stealth Irons to replace my Cobra F Max which were too heavy. With the Taylormade Stealth 7 Iron I am now 17 yards better off, and hitting straight as you say. I was told they were left biased, as I have very slight natural fade anyway. My 7 Iron is back at 135 yards, and I haven't done that since 1985. So very pleased.

If you were going to a target of 175 -180 which is Thomas's gamer distance with the 7 iron, shouldn't you compare to probably a 9 in the stealth. Would then be interesting to look at land angle, spin & distance etc.

It would be nice to see how these work for an 80 year old whose forged blade 7 iron loft is 36 degrees that produces, for example, swing speed 75, ball speed 100, launch angle 22.9, height 81, carry 137, total 146, spin 5370, and descent angle 46.3. The loft on these is closer to my 5 iron, so would I be getting 155-160 yards with better than 45 degree descent angle? The descent angle would be important to get the ball to stop on the green and not run over. I will probably try them during an upcoming demo day at our range. Still, even at 80 I prefer the look of a forged blade despite the sacrifice in distance. Just a stubborn old goat.

Hello! I just found your channel…it’s excellent!! I’m considering getting new clubs, however it’s been four years since I last played and I didn’t want to rush into things, compared when I first started. I was hoping to get some feedback from you. I have a set of mizuno mx950 (3h, 4h, 5-pw) that I purchased as my first set and have played the most with. I did find them a little hard to hit with, but when I got it right!!! I loved them. Of course the fault lies with me and not having a consistent swing. A bit later I purchased a set of Taylor made rocket balls HL (4-pw) I played three rounds with them and that when my friend and I stopped playing. I didn’t love them, but I really didn’t use them enough to get use to them. My question is, and I know it’s very subjective, but, if I went with new clubs (high handicapped player) would you recommend the mizuno jpx 921 forged, jpx 921 hot metal or the Taylor made stealth? Or if you have another set to recommend. (I didn’t care for high launch angles, if I wasn’t getting distance. And with the mx950 I was getting more distance then the rocket balls). Thank you in advance for any feedback or suggestions you have.

On all these reviews of "game improvement" irons, the "better" players always say these clubs aren't necessarily for them, but what I see in these numbers are that a "better" player hitting a 7 iron 211 yards with 46 degree landing angle... My question is WHY exactly wouldn't you want something like this no matter the skill level? I mean, sure spin plays a part, but who wouldn't want to be hitting a 7 iron 200+ yards potentially as a 2nd shot into a par 5 with 45+ degrees of landing angle? I'd say game them but practice enough to understand the new distances per iron..
