Out of The Woods is an awesome video. Especially when you see the effort that went into it, in this short look at how it was made, you can see why. I love the attention to detail. Similarly a lot went into the live version on the 1989 tour. It was immense in how big the sound was. I'm thinking that there is more to this song than we know.

When I think of the theme of this video(she found herself after the struggles) is what I think of when I hear "invisible String". I know she sings about Joe but I always think of her going through pain and not knowing about the inner strength that's followed her in an invisible String in her life

Cool. Especially for me, as a word nerd , to hear Taylor Swift use the word "bedraggled" in exactly the right way. I want to give a few of my thoughts on the symbolism of the images in the video. Well... more than a few : ) 1. Tendrils at the beach: Swift is shown looking outward to sea, which is a classic symbol of anticipation and longing. In the old days, wives waited for their sailor husbands to return by looking out for far off ships. Swift's character is thinking about the future, and remembering the past at the same time. As soon as the thorny vines come up, we are entering a memory of the past, bust since it is the beginning of the video, the dark and threatening vines function as foreshadowing. They are an unwanted intrusion into the previously uncluttered scene. They symbolize worry invading paradise- a peaceful mind being disturbed by the outside world. 2. Wolves: Voracious predators chasing a lone prey. It is very significant that although the song involves 2 people, the video has only 1. This is not a literal enactment of the song's narrative. If it were, we would see some dreamy guy fleeing along with Swift. The series of images and scenes metaphorically show her thoughts and feelings- emphasizing her isolation and inner turmoil. We don't see a cut to a couple pushing aside the furniture and dancing as a flashback. This whole video is a metaphorical flashback, like a dream. The wolves are symbols of all the troublesome thoughts that come from outside the dream world. Of course you could make it simple and just think of them as paparazzi, but we're trying to stay highbrow here ! It's worth noting that the wolf tears Swift's dress, but does not actually bite into her. That suggests that the danger is being stripped of protection, being made vulnerable and having your private nakedness exposed to the world. Not having the wolves actually bite her helps maintain the sense of being in a dream that is not quite a pure nightmare. The dream is primarily about struggle, not about victimization. The wolves are from the "rest of the world" which is "black and white," (here they are very dark greens and browns) - while Swift's vivid blue dress and skin are in "screaming color." All of a sudden she is on a cliff, pauses, throws her necklace into the sea, and dives in soon after. You could say she's following her heart- if you want to get that literal and cheesy. I'd rather not, but YOU could. The fact that the leap occurs just as she sings "two paper airplanes flying" is much more satisfying to think about, IMO. It's not a cliche'. It's a symbol of daring and impermanence. She has to make the choice between jumping into the unknown, or being consumed by fear. If we're going to relate this back to the real world, it might be that she's afraid of what other people will say, or future emotional pain- but that standing still is not a way to avoid it. Luckily, most jumps off a cliff in dreams aren't fatal. Here she gets teleported to a beach. Isn't that conveeeeeenient :) This could be an interlude of peace, as in the dancing "like we stood a chance." 3. Muddy swamp: Unfortunately, freedom and peace- even in love- don't last forever. Apparently that is especially true for Taylor Swift (snark snark). So the beautiful world turns into muck, and the dance has become a slog. The problems return. People are talking about her behind her back, maybe her parents don't approve or her friends aren't very supportive. She's striving, reaching out towards the sky- (escape to a pure and maximally free space)- but the thorny vines burst up and keep her down on earth, even though she seems to be transported to a peaceful state of mind by the memory "You were looking at me." For a moment, the vines stop constricting her, and she is magically cleaned of most of the mud. Then painful reality then imposes itself again in the dream, and even when she breaks out of the constricting thorns, she falls down repeatedly. This is sort of like being "made to fall apart, then fall back together." We see a series of alternating fire and ice, which is much like passion interspersed with distance and separation- as in an on-again-off-again or long distance relationship. But at the end, the wolves are standing still. Somehow she has gained a power to keep them from attacking. The power is mental, since she is turned away from them- not facing them and holding them at bay by breathing fire at them or something. That is one way they could go in future videos- SUPER POWERS. She's already broken through a concrete wall in "Bad Blood" with her (95 pound?) body- why not laser vision or something? If you're going to get revenge on a guy who was a jerk to you, wouldn't lasers and fire be an awesome way to go about it? Maybe just wait for them until the walk right in front of all the red carpet photographers and then just evaporate all their clothes. "Ha Ha. He's so....scrawny." 4. Hand on shoulder: The Swift who has been through the woods- and danger/torment- lays a hand on the shoulder of her past self- the Swift we saw at the beginning. Presumably this is like an attempt to reassure her past self that she will get through her trials and come out OK on the other side. But the cyclical nature of time in the video suggests the cyclical nature of memory- we keep replaying the past over and over in our heads as a way to try to make sense of it and learn from it. But each time we have to remember the pain as well as the joy. We try to use our painful experiences as a way to "find our self," and hopefully not make the same mistakes or be exposed to the same fears again. -------------- Like my theories? Cool.
