the line “i think your house is haunted, your dad is always mad and that must be why” always hurts me. i didn’t grow up in an abusive house, but the innocence of not knowing why a parent is mad all the time hurts no matter what
@fe5018

When I listen to Taylor sing the lyrics, I kind of just offhand heard it as the dad must be mad because of the influence of the haunted house on him but reading your reply, it really does come across like it's his anger that actually haunts the house. And yeah, that's a chillingly relatable feeling for some.

@rose petal, as i said, that was my initial assumption but I think it works on both levels, which I hadn't thought of until the op's comment.

same with me. I didn't grow up in a abusive house (i'm so grateful for that). and you perfectly put what I felt, in a sentence. I think I can also kinda relate from Taylor's perspective cause growing up, I had a friend who had parents that would argue with each other every now and then and her and i would just hang out and play at my place. Just today I had the album playing while i was putting on makeup and when this lyric came up my eyes started watering. I think I'll always get teary eyed when it comes up.

I read in a blog just a few days ago something like: "With 'Folklore', Swift achieved something pretty unlikely for most of popstars; she kept her old-loyal fanbase, she caught and mesmerized her haters and made the ones who wouldn' t notice her turn to see her, all in just one move". I definitely agree! I was in the third group but not anymore, I guess. These songs are simply beautiful!

This song reminds me of a story of my own. I had a best friend that I met in 2nd grade. We became friends because we were assigned rocks to create a house for (weird 90's American stuff, I guess). Her home life wasn't great, but she had a great spirit. Soon we found out our grandparents were best friends, and our families knew each other very well. Both our grandparents owned cabins in upstate New York in the same county and then we found out our cabins were nearly half a mile from each other. We spent so many amazing summers up there together, watching fireworks, eating amazing food and fishing. Unfortunately, she passed away ten years ago, but I'll always remember those days when we were 13. I love you, Chereen April.

"please picture me in the weeds before I learned civility" I'm taking Literature right now and honestly, my teacher would probably wet himself because of how awesome and compact this one line is. Weeds are wild and she wants to be remembered when she was in that state (that could be compared to a child- which basically ties in with this song) instead of her when she's an adult- "before I learned civility"; "I hit my peak at seven"

@sagegreen_05

i had a traumatic childhood growing up, yet i never really realized it until a couple years ago. this song, in my interpretation, is between seven year old me and me now. swings, sweet tea summer, braids, dolls, playing in the trees and weeds, and creeks were a huge part of my childhood, they were things that i loved. although my memory is fuzzy, and my childhood is a blur, i still love my younger self with everything in me, and i miss her more than anything. the bridge is something i feel like my younger self would say to present me. she wouldn’t understand the trauma i have been put through, and she would just want to play to make me happy. this song is criminally underrated. it’s so nostalgic, sad, sweet, and beautiful. my favorite song off of folklore.

I usually listen to music while working, and I swear every time this song (and the whole Folklore album) comes, I always skip. Because I can't afford to cry at work. This whole album for some reason, always pulls my 100% 6 senses to listen, to feel, to understand, and to personally resonate with it. As somebody who grew up in a family similar to this song, my childhood was nothing but tough. I feel like my small self is singing to my current adult version, and saying "Hey you are doing very well and I am very proud of you for growing up so well, despite everything you have gone through".

I know no one will see this, but I just want to say Thank You, Taylor. I’ve recently started freshman year of high school, and I’m getting those hopeless and depressed mindsets and attitudes and what not. I been a similar experience 2 years ago, and listening to Billie Eilish really helped me through it. But as a new chapter of my life begins, my tastes tend to shift. I’ve loved willow by Taylor ever since it first came out, but I’ve only just recently discovered her entire folklore and evermore albums. I’ve loved Taylor ever since 2014, but these are the first albums that resonate with me and my wounded spirit, especially seven. Seven doesn’t accurately describe what I’m going through right now, but the line about wishing for happy times and memories describes what I’m going through on the nose. I still have a such a long way to go before I do again feel happy, but she’s with me the entire ride. I just know it. Thank you, Taylor. For all that you’ve done, and what you have contributed in my life 💚

Just look at the number of people that are excited about the "We'll move to India" part of the lyrics. This just goes to show how big of a fanbase she has in India. You have to come to India now Taylor.

It has that feeling of watching a very old video tape, when you feel a mixture of nostalgia and happiness for how amazing those times were, regret that you can never go back to when things were that blissful, and also sorrow for friends who may have been going through terrible situations that you were most definitely unaware of, all wrapped in a countryside setting where there didn’t seem to be a care in the world. Literally all the emotions come to me when I listen to this! 😭😭😭

"I love you to the moon and the Saturn" is it just me or have anybody notice this lyrics. ( Saturn has seven distinctive rings, and the title of the song is SEVEN) she's literally a genius.

Also, the seventh day of the week is Saturday, which is derived from Saturn. That's why, it's one of the main elements of the song.

Maybe I’m just a dark person but “your dad is always mad” and “then you won’t have to cry or hide in the closet” references an abusive home. Such a hauntingly dark yet beautiful song.

The lyrics are bittersweet, not sad. This song doesn't focus on an abused child but the love children have for each other and want to help who they love. I teach high school but have taught grades 2-12 and have often witnessed how sweet children can be, and how clearly they can see things for what they are, before the fog of puberty and the confusion of teenage life hits. When she sings "But I knew everything when I was young" in Cardigan, I completely understand what she's singing about. I get welled up tears in my eyes every single time I hear this song. It reminds me of all the little souls I have taught and their stories. And yes, if you want to know if your teacher remembers you after you've grown up...yes we do. ❤ 💙 💜
