One of the things I've most like about hostels, including traveling in Europe and around the U.S., is meeting people from all over. The social aspect is really fun and it's not just youth.

Great editing and very informative. I always liked to see a quick screenshot of whatever the breakfast looks like when you are staying at a hostel. I've had to stay in shared sleeping quarters over the years and always carry a pair of earplugs. They are tiny and weigh nothing and I just put them in to sleep if it ends up being a loud situation.

A very well done vid post. I think you we very truthful and on point . We here at the Discerning Hiker Hostel have adjusted things for our 3rd year in operation. We try to be flexible for the hikers , as we know that hiking is not always a point to point trip. When hikers ask, we try to find an answer that will help. Most hostels run on a razor thin margin. Hostels are not a get rich in any time frame buisness. Most hostels do it for the hikers not the money. We want the hikers to have a nice quiet rest and recharge before getting back on trail. We have been there and done that. Thank you again for your quality info about hostels....it was 99% accurate.

Thanks so much, Taylor! This was very helpful. I’m NOBO beginning mid-Feb., and the hostel situation has been kind of a concern of late. But I know it’ll all work out when I’m out there. FarOut IS awesome! And I live in Virginia, about 18 miles from Damascus, and my sister lives more NE VA in the Lynchburg/Roanoke area, so between my husband and her, I don’t have to do hostels in most of Virginia, so that’s 1/4 of the trail lol! Money saver, too! Anyway, thank you, again, for another very informative vlog! Really enjoy your channel! 🙌🏻❤️

Inspiring thru hiker here. I sectioned hiking last October and I stayed at a new hostel, called the Green Dragon and Hiawassee. After doing a long section at the beginning of the AT I drove over at the Green Dragon that opened up last year and stayed and had a wonderful dinner and then they cooked a nice breakfast for us hikers. There was me and four other gentlemen. All enjoyed each other’s company and we all agree it was a terrific place. This is what you get for $60. You’ll get your laundry done, dinner, breakfast and of course, a nice shower. I also was driven from Hiawassee to Hogpen gap and I hiked to Unicoi gap. They picked me up and brought me back to the hostel, and I took one more shower and they charge me a total of $30 for dropping me off at Hogpen and picking me up at Unicoi and I thought that was a bargain. Super super nice people I highly highly recommend this place. Oh yes, one more thing they do have some resupply availability. But you have Dollar General and a grocery store not too far away and they will bring you there.

Thanks for a very informative video. A couple of random questions: Are you supposed to tip anyone? If yes, how much? Are section hikers welcome at hostels? Did anyone ever steal anything from you at a hostel?
@ChicaandSunsets
@ChicaandSunsets 5 ай бұрын
We own Chica and Sunsets’ Hostel in Franklin. While I can’t speak for other hostels I’ll give you our answers. Tipping is not expected nor necessary. Of course we won’t decline the extra cash :) One great way to “tip” is just to leave a review on FarOut, Google, Yelp, etc. All hikers are welcome. Oftentimes section hikers need parking and shuttles (which we provide) but a hiker is a hiker. We are a very small hostel (4beds) and experiences at larger hostels might have more of a problem, but this is our 5th year running and have never had a hiker let us know something got stolen.

Maine Roadhouse is a must. The Barn Door hostel is a much better choice than Hiker's Welcome if you want a break before or after Moosilauke. There are three different trailheads where the owner's dad will pick up at and a trip to Walmart (best outfitter on the AT) is included. Unfortunately some people (and towns) view AT hikers as piggy banks with backpacks.

The Yellow Deli is owned and managed by The Twelve Tribes which is indeed a cult. They practice complete obedience of women and children through physical and mental abuse. They are a horrible organization, and I personally helped a young woman escape from them in Manitou Springs, CO. They pick up lost young people (Phish shows, the streets, the trail) and turn them into subservient slaves. Please don't support them!
