I just like giving criticism (as well as receiving it) with different artists! I think sam is very talented specifically in the way he colours his art, but when i used to watch his videos i noticed that a lot of his drawings look like the same face but with different hair/eye colour. @@lergia I think what they were trying to say is that when you draw the same thing multiple times, you develop muscle memory and it’s easier to draw faster and more effectively therefore, it is possibly the reason why those drawings take around an hour. @ColdBaltBlue Жыл бұрын
You can make relatively complex art quickly by doing some background work before you start your piece. Familiarize yourself with your art style by creating a legend of different body parts and facial features at different angles, experimenting with different shapes and sizes. This way, you’re not constantly struggling to figure out how a character should look, which will eventually speed up the drawing process. As for easy colouring, start with your mid tone, your darkest ambient occlusion, and the tone between those two. After that, you can pull out additional values and add specularity. The closer to the light and the smoother the object, the more intense the specularity. If it’s a darker object, reduce your range of values: matte dark uses a few darker values, shiny dark uses sharp gradations from light to dark unless it’s translucent, then it would need more values for a mirror-like quality. The colour of the light shows up the strongest in shadows, but also a bit on the main tones, so if you have blue ambient light like the sky, there will be blue in the shadows of your subject, with smaller hints in the light. The stronger the light, the lower the range of values. Consider using families of colour for your subject as well. Have a light and dark family for each different coloured object on it, and be sure the values are no lighter or darker than anything in the opposite family. Like the video said, use big, sloppy zones of colour before you refine. This will allow you to preview how your piece will look before it’s finished and establish a visual language.

the "color variation" happens because when a shadow and color meet there is a transition color between the two

As much as I'm not into the style, I do agree with his methods to paint for the algorithm. People seem to forget that artists aren't exactly machines and most are now stuck between working on more holistic artwork and painting stuff to post on time. It's bloody fucking irritating when I have to carve out time from my day after working to paint the bloody social media piece, and _then_ work on my portfolio piece. The pros ofc, are that you do improve a little or learn to streamline your process. Cons are that you don't actually improve a whole lot if you have to rush a post every/other day. Painting with focus is the only key to improving on the long haul. It's weird, this new consume-and-trash culture we've got.
