As someone who was diagnosed with generalized anxiety pretty young, and ADHD and autism as I got older, I really want to thank you for bringing that all up in this video!!! I really agreed with pretty much everything you had to say, and I think you said it in a really respectful and thoughtful way. My personal language learning journey has been interesting, because I learned Latin in school for almost 4 years, but retained next to nothing, but over the past year I've been self studying Mandarin Chinese, and I'm almost at a B1 level. So the difference in learning methods in school vs what I did for myself made a *huge* difference, and it's been a huge journey in figuring out how I learn best. I especially like the whole talk you had near the end about consuming content critically. I think it's super important to have media literacy in that way, and I love the way you talked about it in a way that isn't negative towards content creators but is also very serious about how we interact with their content. Thank you so much for this video, and good luck with your language journey!

I absolutely agree with everything you’ve said but I want to add something to the discussion about influencers motivating their audience when they have different motivations. When I’m in the need for inspiration, I love watching language learning and study vlogs. I might not have the time to dedicate five hours of my day to grammar and vocabulary, but after watching someone else do it, I make sure I spend thirty minutes or an hour doing a small exercise. Your success is not at my expense. It benefits me! I hope you can make this your full time job. Let me know what I can do to help you achieve that.

I'm also an Autistic adult and have ADHD and C-PTSD, etc. It's so important to hear the perspectives of others with our same disabilities! And yes-- different people (even if they have the same disability!) have different ways of learning, being motivated, having energy, processing information, etc. There is no one-size-fits-all. "At the same time, people want you to be an expert, but also they want you to be relatable." Yes. I think this is influenced a lot by the shift from KZfaq as a social media community-focused platform to a professional-leaning platform... Now audiences expect people to be perfect and perfectly reliable like a professional (even as they don't make a lot, if any compensation for it), while also being entertaining and have a lot of glamor and high-end production (that requires a team of people behind the scenes) while being only one person... The expectations around this remind me of The Society of the Spectacle: the idea that someone who has endless energy, time, ability, perfection, to be an "influencer" to meet all those expectations could be "just like me"/ "a normal person with an average life" (i.e. relatable, accessible) is based on myths and illusions-- especially the myth and illusion of equal opportunity.

What a great video - I will never be a polyglot but I watch several channels for fun (I'm only learning Italian) and I do think you bring something different to the table. It looks hard to be a language youtuber, I see people branching out into making videos about other topics and I wonder if that's because it's hard to find that unique angle. I massively appreciate your honesty I was wondering how you can spend 1-2+ hours a day on a language, how you fit that in, and make (such high quality!) videos and you've answered my question. I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with how people are learning we need to find ways that work for us. I also watched a bunch of the learning videos, but the truth is a lot of people in language learning do not 1. have full-time classes or 2. full-time jobs. I spent years learning Japanese and lived there and thought I retained nothing, but the truth is when I went back to using apps as a passive way to remember my studies I realized I retained a lot of it long term and decided to casually go back into learning it in a way that fits my schedule. So the rate of learning doesn't matter just make sure you don't burn yourself out trying to compete with KZfaqrs or anyone else that have way more time to study.

Thanks Tanya: I sometimes feel undiagnosed with whatever is keeping me from being anything like successful. I didn’t have the best childhood so there could be a few reasons there. I am now rather old, 70 and not in the best of health. At times I say that I only want to learn more Spanish and be more confident in speaking, reading and writing it. Well, “confident” is a big deal. Thank God for your parents who felt the need to get you started in your learning journey. I started rather late in my study of Spanish; in my mid forties. I have had ups and downs. I won’t bore anyone with the details. Just wanted to say really that you are appreciated ❤.

Thank you for sharing and being so open. I find your videos very inspiring and always find a takeaway that is helpful. I think you said it all. I am currently learning Italian and have a lot of challenges with my memory and consistency so I often watch language-learning videos for a boost of motivation. I do find some videos leave me feeling bad that I haven't progressed very fast but I always step away when I feel like that. I think you do a great job of keeping things real and I appreciate that. I wish you the best in your endeavors and hope you will still be able to make videos from time to time but I understand and thank you for all that you have done.

Helpful video! And you are so right. I am a walking example of a person studying using all the wrong methods haha but it works for me so I am gonna stick to it! I love putting just words (not whole sentences) on flashcards, I love studying grammar, I love making notes and I do not wanna listen to some podcast for HOURS, I am done after 15 minutes but I enjoy studying grammar so everything, not the right way but who cares, at least I am still studying :)

Hey Tanya, thank you for sharing your experience. I've been procratinating with one work task for a week. After watching your video I somehow can find the will to start working on that. Regarding your recomendation of the book "Laziness does not exist", tbh I think it does exist and I am a lazy person. And this assumption of mine is a very good reason to add the book to my reading list (and then procrastinate and do not read it lol). But jokes aside, I am sure I can benefit from it. And thank you for being so open about your diagnosis. Going back to my work task, or i will change my mind, procrastinate for one more week and get myself fired!

People always act like I'm some sort of genius for learning Spanish (as my first foreign language) in like a couple of months by just watching a tv-show, but they seem to completely zone out when I talk about how I forgot to eat and drink and had trouble making myself go to bed and almost never left the house that summer, because surprise surprise it was a very intense hyperfixation, I watched and rewatched the same show from the moment I woke up to the moment I needed to sleep for months, it's not fun and I'm not a genius, I just have adhd, it's 5pm and I haven't brushed my teeth or eaten yet

I consider myself bilingual in Spanish and English, albeit I want to learn more languages, after not doing any new language learning in college for a really long while I picked up Mandarin Chinese, and while I'm far from my goal I felt like I'm progressing? But something is wrong with how most people approach language learning, I watched in your other videos how you don't consider speaking a goal in some languages (I also don't really, I want to be able to use my language in an emergency or if I ever travel to China but that's not why I'm learning), as well as how we just need to take it chill. I'm autistic and even though I like doing this I find like some neurotypical advice I see doesn't really apply to me. Recientemente he podido desarrollar mi propia metodología, sobre todo me gusta usar input, leer y escuchar, pero también debería de adaptarse al idioma, hay varios idiomas que me gustaría aprender. Recientemente he podido desarrollar un plan para estudiar euskera, un idioma que me resultaría útil en mis circumstancias pero no he sabido como afrontar, de momento voy a seguir con mi Chino un poco más pero cuando sienta que tengo un nivel en el cual sea más fácil mantenerlo empezaré con el euskera, si no llego tan lejos como me gustaría no es muy importante ya que ahora mismo no necesito realmente aprender ninguno de los dos idiomas, pero es un buen hobby para sentir que estoy haciendo algo con mi vida mientras que me lo paso bien, si por lo que sea me piden euskera en un trabajo (vivo en una región donde es hablado) o acabo en China viajando, por trabajo o por cualquier motivo, entonces sí me plantearé estudiarlos para obtener un muy buen nivel de acorde a lo que necesite, pero si me acabo agobiando no pasa nada

Hi Tanya, lately I feel overwhelmed with my language learning and feel I'm getting nowhere. Is it a mistake, you think, to try and fit in a lot of language studies all in one day? And moreover, do you feel it's best to focus on one language at a time until achieving some level proficiency before moving on to the next? Also, how do you keep track of your hours spent studying, or how do you log this if you do at all? Thank you!!

I've been trying to learn English since last year (I only speak Spanish) and I've been feeling very guilty for not starting earlier because I've been comparing myself with people who have a different context. This video encourages me to continue on my journey.

Advice in general can be either good or bad depending on how it’s presented from one person to another. What I have personally learned is that any advice even in language learning is to take it with a grain of salt because the advice could be beneficial for that particular person but may not be beneficial for you.

One of the less useful pieces of advice is the Internet obsessed with input. It seems to be great for false debutants, people who had classes in school and know something about the structure of the language or are learning a language from the same language family (like I understand a lot of Ukrainians without putting even half the effort I put into Chinese). Also, you are the first language KZfaqr who doesn't focus as much on speaking and much more on content consumption.
