FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I've learned more about the TBM from Osama than any Daher-Socata promotional videos on KZfaq - food for Thought? Great job posing the questions, and fantastic narration by Osama. Can't wait for the "Phenom"enal video!

Right on! I really appreciate this feedback! My goal with these productions is to create engaging and immersive flying content - and when able , with in context of the story, I fit tasteful product placements in for sponsors (such as ForeFlight and Bose in this one). In this case, Daher was clearly part of the story too, despite not being a sponsor (yet? :).

As a 18,000 hr. plus airline Captain, and a commercially rated pilot for 31 years, I like listening to Osama explain the what/how he handles his flying. FlightChops you are fortunate to have found and fly with such a professional and detailed oriented Private pilot. Such attention to the small details are often very rare. In my years as a CFI/II/MEI, Instructor Pilot, Flight Safety Instructor, etc. I find Osama refreshing and very impressive.

Osama is an awesome pilot. Very professional and prepared and in today's world that can be difficult to find sometimes. It would be an honor to fly with him. Love your content Steve. I've been watching for years now and it's been neat to watch the progression of production quality. I recently did a 3000 mile odyssey from Anchorage down to Texas and I went through Canada. I'm flying with him again tomorrow for this very reason :) . Just reviewing this episode to remind myself of what the taxi clearance is gonna sound like getting from his hangar as I'll be running the radios - and I am rusty as heck because all I have been doing lately is flying a T6 VFR - not much radio work to do. :P)

Wow!!! This is very cool. I took 40 hours worth of VFR lessons at Harv's air, in Steinbach, way back in 1978 and 1979, before moving west to British Columbia. I have fond memories of those exciting flights with Harv himself, who I enjoyed learning from a lot. :-)

Great primer on flying in the levels with a complex aircraft. It is wise to be familiar with the operation of emergency O2 equipment no matter the role in the AC. We all respond a little differently to hypoxia, the reason being. Also, checklist, checklist, checklist. I missed the before descent checklist here, so I also missed the altimeter and cabin pressurization items, amongst others. Great video.

I've been pushed clean off the runway into the grass once when landing in south TX. Got it back off the ground before hitting the flagpole at mid field. Steam vs glass - it's all about knowing where to look when the pressure is on and the brain is reaching saturation point. You tend to quickly revert to instinct under those circumstances, so the key here is to slow down, be deliberate in your actions and use a checklist so procedures aren't abbreviated or overlooked. I have just returned to the cockpit after an 8 year hiatus and conducted a check flight in a G1000 C172. I found that far more difficult and frustrating (having never actually flown glass) than flying a Mojave 2 days later with a familiar analogue cockpit despite the huge disparity in aircraft performance!

One thing that is becoming an eye opener is in congested RVSM airspace you’ll only have 1,000’ separation but could be overtaken or passed opposite direction from a “heavy” which has a max gross takeoff of 300,000 lbs or more! Last year you may have read about a Challenger 604 which has an MTOW of 48,200 was rolled over and dropped 10,000 feet before recovering. Imagine what that would have done to that TBM! So, even though in Class A & in RVSM traffic & wake turbulence avoidance is still a HUGE subject that is often overlooked. I was flying into Atlanta last year in a CJ1 and was being vectored on a downwind behind a Boeing 757 about 5 Miles in trail that we were not made aware of. We felt two shudders and without any notice we entered a 45° bank & increasing even when the pilot was at full opposite aileron to prevent the roll. Although that wasn’t in RVSM airspace that was definitely in my top 3 scariest moments in my flying career.
