You know, when it comes to the Twisted Metal series, there's a lot of stimulating debate to be had over which is the worst game. Despite only having a handful of games, it's generally agreed that Twisted Metal 2 or Black are the best. As for the worst, for most people it's pretty much a toss-up between the rest of the games. Twisted Metal 3, 4, Small brawl, head on, 2012, and some people even dislike the first game. In my case… well I'm not sure if that's still the case.

Hey, I saw your review of the Twisted Metal tv show. Personally, I think they should’ve made the main character Sweettooth’s younger brother and his partner Krista Sparks, calypso’s daughter. That way they wouldn’t have had to change Dollface because “John Doe” would have Sophie as his sister instead.

TM4 will always be special to me because it was my first TM game. And as a kid, I have no understanding of game mechanics, story etc so I just had a blast playing it alone and with friends. Also that menu track of One Minute Silence is permanently embedded in my memory. Its up there with TM Black's menu music and the Los Angeles/Playground Peril theme from TM2/SB. Thank you TBP! Personally, I very much appreciate Twisted Metal 4's avant-garde approach to the series (where bold risks were taken in development, which is an uncommon trend nowadays in gaming), with Sweet Tooth taking over, the art direction, the intro, characters - some new and strange - and the maps such as Carnival, Oil Rig, and Neon City, not to mention the soundtrack (to this day, we still love to play Cirrus' Time's Running Out from Neon City). So much personality in that game! I remember my brother and I going to the game rental store in 1999, seeing Twisted Metal 4's awesome cover on the shelf and being thrilled to play it. Of course there is TM2 and Black, but for these reasons, TM4 always stands out in my mind as one of my top favorite TM games, if not my favorite.

Nightmare Creatures 2 also heavily featured Roberto Zombie. The intro and T.V. spot both used the song Demonoid Phenomenon. Modern games are missing that. Not only good actual songs that people actually listen to but just good songs in general.

THOUGHTS ON GAMEPLAY MECHANICS: 13:41 The codes gained an extra input because of complaints 989 received over Twisted Metal 3's attacks being too easy to accidentally input. I know that first-hand, accidentally firing off a freeze blast when I was trying to do a fast weave in a panic many times as a kid. As for why Rear-Attack costs energy: It was straight up overpowered in TM3 because it bypassed weapon cooldowns, letting you fire as fast as you could input the command. (in fact, the TM3 Hard Mode A.I. abuses the hell out of this too. 989 knew about it.) That said, 989 should have made it cost no energy, while programming it to respect weapon cooldowns. 16:38 Enemies are very easy to kill with the right combos. As for hitboxes, yeah, they were tightened up quite a bit from basically every prior game, so you have to be more precise, and learn what weapons work best at which ranges. Homing missiles over-track at close range, which finally gives them a plausible drawback and forces players to learn how to use other weapons correctly. TM: Black and Head-On would go on to retain these nerfs in one fashion or another. (with TM: Black flat out nerfing the base damage of Homers significantly; they knew it was a balance issue too, 989 just got around to addressing it first) 14:40 I don't agree that there was no improvement from TM3; the cars are VASTLY more responsive, and can actually turn worth a damn now; which is the primary reason the prior game felt so slow and why TM2 feels so fast. Frankly, I prefer these physics to Twisted Metal 2's most of the time, and feel like people forget just how janky they were in that game too anytime the levels got rampy or vertical. The clingy tires are really weird and buggy, I'll give you that. It's something that seriously needed polish. However, what often goes unspoken about TM4 in particular is how its physics let you do some seriously fun car-fu via the Turbo. Those jets of flame that fire off when you use Turbo are not just for show; they actually propel your vehicle in that direction and that INCLUDES WHILE AIRBORNE. You can actually jump (via the command input power or a ramp), turn mid-air and Turbo-boost horizontally in another direction. No other TM game really lets you do this to this extent, and it's the sole reason I forgive the otherwise wonky toy-car physics, because on some levels it's incredibly fun and useful (Amazonia, Minion's Maze, two of the Tron-looking unlockable test-demo levels).

If and when the new TM finally drops I wouldn't mind seeing some things from 4 implemented. Although it's far from one of the better entries in the series, I liked some of the new weapons like the freeze remote and Auto Lob (a bunch of mortars fired rapidly), and the the proximity mines were a blast... literally... to chain together. Also enjoyed some of the characters. Orbital had a cool story, Calypso having his own nuke truck was awesome and the first alien character (Quatro) was a neat addition. Creating your own car was a unique and smart addition, hats off to whoever came up with that idea. Yeah it was pretty bare bones but still to this day no other TM has that. The soundtrack was great and each song fit the level perfectly. My only gripes with the game were that the levels weren't real world locations, some of the characters were more awkward than funny and physics wise I'd say this game is the worst in the series. Getting stuck in the ground or on walls, all of your weapons missing the other cars, crappy ramming collisions, etc. It really takes away from the fun and flow of the game, as you said in the video. TM4 while not a bad game is definitely on the lower end of the TM spectrum for me too. Even at the time of it's release there were better games on the market like the Vigilante 8 games and Rogue Trip (would love to hear your take on those 3 games in depth one day). Can't wait for your Small Brawl review tho. Completely agree that it's an absolute gem that's severely underrated.

the thing is, i just wish they would get remaster and brought up to date with modern graphics and game engines so that their true potential can be seen. bugs can be fixed, balancing issues corrected and so on.... actually, i have been wanting to learn 3D modeling and game development because there are a lot of older games that if remastered could likely outsell or out perform most of the AAA garbage that's being pushed now a days. i already have ideas for how it would work, there would be classic mode so everything would be the same but with the graphical and audio improvements, and then there would be the reworked option where it fixes a lot of what's broken and overall improves the things that were broken or flawed before. so like how it takes energy to fire backwards, that would be corrected to zero charge but it would still respect the cooldown for weapon fire because it was broken as all hell in TM3. or how the sweet tooth fight is way overpowered, i would fix it so that sweet tooth cant spam the same special attack relentlessly as TBP points out. just things like that would be my goal with a remaster if i was to try my hand at doing it which i do intend to try eventually. im still learning while balancing two jobs so progress is SLOW. but one day i hope to be able to make that dream a reality.

I liked 4 a good bit back then (though not as much as Black). The characters are cheesy, but the stages and the music are great and I like all of the secret locations and weapon variety as well. They tried to put a lot into it and shake things up, but the tone did feel a bit different with the newer characters. I didn't get into 3 as much as I just couldn't get into the slippery controls. Overall still good times and it reminds me of how much time has flown by. Also Duke 3d on PS1 allowed you to change the detail to help with frame rate as well. It's definitely a good option to have, especially on more congested levels.

you can pretty much cheese every stage construction yard, grab the enemies with the crane and drop them but as they are going down grab them again, the enemies take damage when they enter those big boxes with fire, not when touching the fire, so i you thrown them in, grab them to take them out of the box and then release them again you can kill them in like 4 drops or something, for the boss fight the crane gets destroyed so you cant do it that way for the neon city, go to the secret area grab the lightning, get rid of every weapon except for the lighting, wait for your special move to reload, get rid of it, use lighting and spam rear attack, everyone will die in like 2 or 3 lightings if they are in the area where it hits the stage road rage is boring the best way to win that one is to lay proximity mines after the speed boost or after a teleport portal, still the portals are in the upper side of the stage and the ai almost never goes there. the bedroom, same as neon city, grab the lightning and spam rear attack, in this stage the lighting hits near the electrical plugs, also you can use the portal to teleport to the bed and lay 3 proximity mines, RC car will teleport after you get hit and die from flying out of the map to the sky amazonia, same as before, grab the lightning and spam rear attack. the lightning hits around the tower oil rig, again, get the lightning spam rear attack, the lightning hits in the main platform minion maze, grab the lightning and spam rear attack, the lightning hits the entire map except for the highest area, and the lighning is at the highest spot carnival, grab the lightning and spam rear attack, the lightning hits the roller coaster and near it, this makes it a little more annoying to kill the enemies since they have to be close to the roller coaster to die it surprised me that you said rear attack sucks because at least in my opinion is the most broken thing in the game.

Twisted Metal 4 is still my favrotie PS1 game of all time. It has flaws and quite frankly I thought it was good right out the gate, but I think with how crazy it can get, especially Sweet Tooth, yo7 can make an argument that this game really is Twisted. I’ll give you a few things, the physics can be tough to work with although to be fair I find it more humorous than annoying, the stages are indeed ti big but you have to give credit to the amount of secrets there are. Back then in blew me away, it was like the game that just kept on giving. The final battle against Sweet Tooth I’ll only give you half, yeah yeah up up down down, but all things considered if you make it to the game with all 5 lives then Sweet Tooth dosent stand a chance. Plus he’s the final boss, you kinda have to expect final, boss’s to be cheap or unfair. Not to mention there is another way to cheese a fight in a fun way. Use freeze bombs, plant a bunch of Mine’s and lay Dynamite on top of it and wait for the freeze to wear off and detonate, that’s half damage guaranteed and sometimes a fall kill. This game does give you creative ways to kill. And yeah the controls can be hit and miss but I didn’t find the controls to be bad out the gate and Orbital is one of my favorite car’s. And quite frankly the cutscenes are so scary, so awkward and so memorable that one can’t help but love them. I remember each and every character, I remember their dialogues, I remember their ends, their specials, I remember so much about these characters . Maybe part of the reason is because this was my first Twisted Metal game and I own both 3 and 4 and when I tried to play 3 it just didn’t feel right at all. It felt glitchy and unstable and not in a fun way so,I went back to 4. So maybe a new comer could find more enjoyment like I did compared to someone like you who came into the game as a veteran. Twisted Metal 4 is a good game, flawed? Yes, but still good and I’d rather have a good game in hindsight than a bad game over all and for me personally the game was good out the gate. I can understand if a veteran has issues but a new comer might just have a different experience and opinion like me and thanks to that I can enjoy this game without the first 3 games holding it down. Try to keep that in mind 😀✌️ Great video 😀

For me Black and the unreleased Black sequels will always be the best of the series, but the PS1 games are extremely important in many ways. TM1 was one of the first demolition games made that brought life to the genre. 2 was the first game in the series to really get things right. 3 gave us a look at 3D animation (even though it sucks) and 4 was the first time they really messed with the formula and didn’t just do Calypso runs contest, someone wins, they get a wish granted, they get fucked over.

I think with Road Rage the freeway section was designed with the idea of the freeway sector being a separate arena, the intention being that combat there would be very high speed drive by type fighting

I actually liked Twisted Metal 4 because it's the only Car Combat game, to my knowledge, that allows for custom character creation. It should also be noted that the custom character ending, that's not an ending, is also used for the various bosses, including Minion and Sweettooth.

Twisted metal 4 happens to be my all-time favorite game in the series, but while I will vehemently defend this game, most of the complaints lobbed towards it are legitimate and while I can understand why people might take umbridge with most if not all of the major changes, it will always remain my favorite to this day and no one can tell me that I'm not allowed to like it, warts and all. As for the video, I feel that you hit the nail on the head when it came to bringing to light those aforementioned warts but you were also very nuanced and objective overall. So yeah, the video is primo stuff.

I have a wild theory regarding Needles that I have been juggling since I have seen the Black and Head On Endings. That being that Needles head isn't literally on fire. Hear me out My first bit comes from Head On, in Needles ending we see, for a second, Needles looking into the side mirror of his truck, which shows Marcus just for a second. Hell, he likely isn't even dressed as a clown in this game. His real 'form' is implied to simply be Marcus, or to really sell the difference RoadKill. Even with Dark Tooths ending we see that the first personality we see is Marcus before we see Needles kinda get yanked out of Marcus in a meta way. This says to me that the default is Marcus, Needles is just a secondary personality, at least in Head On. Next we go back a bit to Black. In Black, it is established that everything is in his head here, so nothing is as it seems. Now, in a previous video of TBP has inferred that Preacher has some sort of sway over him, likely from past trauma of someone in the realm of religion, and we can't count out the fact that Preacher was present at Needles execution and supposedly put the curse on him. It should also be noted that in the first game Needles didn't have the fire on his head, keep that in mind. Now, lets throw all of this together, using TBP timeline with Black being the first entry/Needles seeing the first game through a specific lens. The fire on his head, being enacted by Preacher at his execution (which may or may not have happened, it could also be all in his head too), he is in the chair, getting zapped which is supposed to kill someone, his head catches fire then he gets stomped by guards. This could represent a priest causing the Trauma, the fire as a result is the pain and madness that resulted from said trauma, and the beatdown immediately after is him feeling helpless when he tried to get away from it, but couldn't. That was the point when he 'died' in a sense and became the Needles we see, the fire not being there at all, but representing his psychosis and insanity. The electric chair bit, the cops, none of that REALLY happened, it is his minds way of interpreting it, a way to cope instead of facing reality, just like with how he views Yellowjacket, but rather than an external identity being the victim, it is internal and makes himself the victim with the electric chair bit. A religious person cause the trauma which killed who his innocence and caused the start of his madness (the fire on his head), he tried to 'run away' from the trauma, but couldn't and it beat him down to the point of accepting his madness. Even the ending is representative of this to a degree. He had the cure to his madness in his hands, but it would mean giving up the persona that in a sense kept him away from the trauma. Needles destroying it could even be his minds way of saying "No, the old Marcus isn't coming back because he isn't wont survive, I wont let him remember it," thus killing Calypso and never again giving himself the chance to ever go back to that frail child who lost his innocence so long ago. Needles, although a psychotic murderer, is in a sense the personality that took over to keep him from being the scared little boy he may have been. Head On, taking the theme of Marcus and Needles being the same person just different personalities, hammers home with the idea of the fire not being there with both endings of Sweet Tooth and RoadKill, it's just not in your face. I know it's grasping at straws to a degree, but it's my way of MAYBE giving more to read into with the mental health concept

I was a huge Twisted Metal fan as a kid. I got a PS1 and a copy of Twisted Metal 2 for my 10th birthday and immediately fell in love with the series. Back then I didn’t understand the switch to 989 Studios so when I happily got a copy of Twisted Metal 3 I remember playing it but not liking it as much as TM2. When I got TM4 for Christmas I thought it was a lot of fun and really did play it all of the time. It wasn’t until years later when I went online that I learned a lot of other people disliked it. I think all the criticisms you point out in this video are totally fair but I still enjoyed the game. I actually would have been interested to see what an alternative universe “Twisted Metal 5” from 989 Studios would have looked like. Because I do respect the way they wanted to create an entirely new cast of characters and make the franchise their own.

I still think that 4 is better than 3, it feels a bit better to play and it at least has a personality of its own. I wouldn't say its great, but it does have some fun and creativity and I'd play it again if I went through all the games, luckily Head On exists so I can ignore 3.

As I had said on your TM3 video. I know this game is bad but I love it all the same. I played it alot along with 3 with my little brother so I have alot of good memories with the game. I like the soundtrack more then 3 but I like the "feeling" of 3's atmosphere. I do wish they did more with the custom character on the wishes like it was pointed out. 989 might have done alot of bad with the TM series but I do love they kept Mel McMurrin as Calypso. TM2-4 Calypso's voice is ICONIC for me and the best in the series with David Boat in Head-On following after.

SMall thing but at 13:16 to their defense, they weren't "taken away" in TM3. Like you said earlier in the video the game was 100% built from scratch and they didn't have time to add in stuff like the shield. Someone asked one of the devs about shield being removed and they pretty much said there was nothing to remove or take away lol

What I am going to say is kinda twisted (haha!) but there's something fun about this game I'd like to point out. What if the Joneses were the winner of the tournament? Think about it: they want a new RV and they got it. Sweet Tooth drive it and run off a cliff, presumably killing the family and himself. The clue is the car. Don't you realise it? What if it was the new Warthog! The Joneses didn't need it anymore, so they get rid of it (like in a junkyard) and someone had the idea to put the body of the station wagon on top of a tank without the turret. It became the new Warthog, featured in both Black and 2012. Twisted theory, huh? (all joke aside, it doesn't match with the timeline video you made some months ago, but who knows?) Otherwise, great review!

Here is a tip for TM4's Sweet Tooth fight just under 5 mins, teleport using the warp over the "Freaks" building next to the giant tint, put 3 sensor mines (Proxinity Mine) right after warping, you have almost 4 seconds before they get detonated, then make your way over the giant tint by jumping from freaks building to tint with a turbo boost and wait for Sweet tooth to warp and get bombed and sent to fly away, then, bye bye! XD

If it helps anyone regarding this game, I found the easiest way to beat Sweet Tooth was with Orbital. His base speed is already so fast, and his turbo is able to OUTRUN his special from tracking you. Although whenever it did get me, i didn't use Hyperspace and instead used Shield to sit through the damage, because I figured that the RNG of Hyperspace wouldn't really help me in that situation.

I used to play this game on the old PS1 as a kid and I never ran into collision issues. I guess I was lucky? I do remember cars feeling rather bouncy though and had the same problems using Orbital. It wasn't impossible but felt kinda ridiculous that I was more like a spinning drill than an "orbital". I don't understand your interest in shortening the campaign. If you wanted to spend less time why not just play a skirmish. As for the levels being too big, I find that also absurd. It was interesting that I could actually lose my opponents and manage to recuperate and come back to fight. I never had a problem navigating but then again I'm also pretty good at mental mapping. Also as a kid I had no idea of any of the D-pad codes. Sweet tooth was hard.

So commenting before the video start. Four is my favorite, but I haven’t played any Twisted metal games in a long time despite owning 1-4, SB, and Black. It started with playing Tm3 first, someone as a kid managing to buy TM 1 and 2 later then the rest I own. But I don’t know why exactly TM4 is my favorite. It might have something to do with there are a lot of playable vehicles. You have the normal cast and then, the custom vehicle and then the bosses. And a good amount of stages too, the normal ones and the special ones.

Man I loved this game. I used to always let myself get special'd by bosses like Auger and Crusher so I can spam nukes on their faces being directly hit by the missile. Also the crane in the first stage has some weird bug where you can pick up the car again halfway through falling into the fire below and they'll get stuck in the roof of the machinery. Then you can drag them left and right and they'll repeatedly take damage

It does have difficulty settings. The start of a match where it sats rank, is the difficulty and every few maps it goes up. For that playthrough. So after you beat sweet tooth and it dumps you on map one is basically starting the game again on a higher difficulty. You have to play through like 5 continuous times to reach yhe highest difficulty and iirc your lives dont reset. And also it's only for that save.

Twisted Metal 4 isn’t canon but I enjoyed the video 😂 The only good things I can say about the game is the soundtrack slapped, Dragula as a playable vehicle, and the contestant/vehicle designs were neat. Also there’s a map generator and vehicle customizer. The maps were good too. Downsides: Rob Zombie didn’t voice himself and Calypso was ass to play as cause his rocket always shot upward. Maybe I just sucked with handling him. The cutscenes were cursed (like you said). The clowns were just…they existed. Fun fact: the version of Dragula used in the game is the same version used in the Matrix.

Oh and if you pay very close attention to Rob's vocalization in White Zombie there actually shines a little mote of hip hop nd rap. beyond just referencing crack, or utilizing the voodoo style gothic imagery, as an adult listening now I almost think Rob was speaking some respect to black culture then. I think its important to recognize that the modern goth movement drew heavily on the image of Voodoo, then also punk and industrial had to contend with actual facists and bigots misunderstanding (indeliberately or otherwise) their messages free expression and freedom from oppression. Ive always been a huge industrial metal fan (I always picture am actual industrial fan... that blows air) and later as I became older I became enamoured with and eventually immersed within rap and hip hop.

TM4 was cool as hell for a teenager, wich I guess it was the whole point of the game, cheesy heavy metal with cars and guns, and a pirate, and Rob Zombie as a f*cking playable character, hell yeah!

One thing 4 add to twists metal is Sweet Tooth and Calypso simply put cement a "rivalry" between these two. after this one is where one or the other wish to screws one another. Generally it Sweet Tooth who torment Calypso. small bawl to have Calypso be mad max, 2010 switching bodies and Having "Sweet Tooth" killed, and Black Sweet Tooth just kills Calypso, compare to Calypso outsmarting Sweeth tooth in 2012 of having Tooth buried alive. 4 is where it a stalemate with both trap in ring.
