In the early eighties 'moshing', stagediving etc. was a hardcore punk thing, it caught on a bit later in metal with the emerging thrash metal scene.

I saw early Metallica and Slayer footages and there was no mosh pit or stage diving. It was a punk thing at the time. Since Saint Vitus was involved in the punk rock scene, what Dave says here is probably true.
