I mentioned this on a couple other reactions.. But what I loved about this Predator was the way it killed/fought its prey. It seemed to use similar attacks that its opponents used. The snake uses its two fangs to kill. So the Predator killed it using its two-pronged blade. When it fought the wolf, he actually got down on all fours. He wrestled and killed the bear with its bare hands. If they used arrows against him, he fought them back with arrows. When the solider threw a net on him, he used his own net against him. I could be over-analyzing things. But just an observation I noticed about his tactics.

None at all. You made a great observation. One little correction is that the "soldiers" are actually French Fur Trappers. That would make sense because where they are is probably somewhere either near or in the Rockies of Colorado or Utah. That would be on the edge of French Louisiana Territory. Sorry if I annoyed you for being a little too detailed.

I saw a tweet from the designer of this Predator that said it's a different phenotype from a more arid part of the Predator's homeworld. You can see some of those "adaptations" in this design; thinner dreads and its coloration. I absolutely love the bone helmet as a mix of ancient and modern tech. Personally, I hope we see more of these serious period-accurate Predator movies. Like, they don't have to advance the "story" of the Predator franchise... a story of human survival against an inhuman foe is plenty.

@@adriel88_ I don't think they need to stay within the same setting exactly. I think if they want to keep a continuity, they could have the protagonist be a descendant of Naru (even if they keep the same actress) who somehow keeps encountering the Predator every century or so. But honestly, I do hope to see more historical Predator movies. I don't see any reason why they need to have more than a loose connection between (if any exists at all).

I always had the idea that individual Predators had their own chosen loadouts, and preferred hunting grounds. Arnold faced a plasma cannon specialist, who liked taking on enemies with automatic weapons. This Predator used blades to hunt on worlds which only had single shot muskets.
@Necrowolf81
@Necrowolf81 Жыл бұрын
uh no. Predators tailor their weapons to the prey and tech of the planet they go to. If you only have a knife/sword/spear, etc they are only going to use something similar. If you have badass automatic weapons then they are going to bring out their "big guns". They are all about the thrill of the hunt. What fun would it be to hunt prey with some OP weapon? It's nothing new and has been part of the comic/novel lore for over a decade.

This is happening in the 18th century, so maybe Predators haven't invented plasma weapons yet.

@@offensivename11 It is interesting to think that we're seeing an alien race improving its own technology, but the Yautja already have space travel, invisibility fields, and a host of other extremely advanced devices. It's unlikely that they don't already have plasma weapons, and more likely that this predator chose a more low-tech loadout because he was visiting a fairly low-tech world.

In the Comanche tradition, one is forbidden to whistle after dark, for it is said to summon Demons. When Naru sets up the Trapper, the dude who wakes up with the rats gnawing away on his bloody stump, she talkd about him bleeding her brother, and now she's gonna bleed him, and to summon the Predator, Naru whistles. I'm so glad you two enjoyed it. I've been going on a nostalgia trip to prep for Prey, so I went back to Predator, Predator 2 and decided to finally take the dip into the Alien vs Predator movies as well as Predators and The Predator since Prey was released. Prey is easily the best addition since Predator 2! "Want some candy?"🍬 I'm glad you are digging the franchise so much and I hope we get a sequel or two to Prey, which are at least on par with or exceed the excellence of this flick. Predator vs pirates is actually a plotline in the comics regarding the origin of the 1715 flintlock gun. The Predator 'Golden Angel' (later known as Elder Predator in P2) acquired the gun from a human pirate. Also, I think you are the first reactors to discern that the Predator didn't kill the buffalos, just from the first viewing. Kudos! Other reactors? Not that sharp 😂 And regarding the Predator hunting law, it doesn't really matter if you have a weapon or not, what matter is if you're a worthy quarry or not.

Awesome reaction as always. Been such a huge fan of predator since 1993 when I saw the first film. The origin of Raphael Adolini's pistol was actually altered in Prey. The guy who gave Naru the pistol is actually Raphael himself. Originally the origin was handled in a comic book where Raphael Adolini is a pirate who gives the flintlock pistol to Greyback (the predator that gives it to Harrigan in the 2nd film) in 1718. Since Prey takes place in 1719 and Adolini is obviously already dead, it really will be very interesting if they continue the Prey series and show how Greyback comes to possess the iconic flintlock pistol. My guess would be that Naru ends up teaming up with Greyback down the line against a greater threat and either gifts it to him, or she dies and he takes it out of respect. Here's to hoping they make an ongoing series out of this.
@danielpopp1526
@danielpopp1526 Жыл бұрын
Well, they do pretty much explain how Greyback gets the pistol, they just don't explain it to us like children. The credits show the ships coming down to the tribe. Predator culture dictates they can't leave any bodies or tech for their prey, hence the self destruct option when they hunt alone. If the self destruct doesn't happen, the body and tech must be collected. As they collect the body of the dead Predator, they more than likely give Naru a gift fir her victory, like they did with Hartigan. A tradition amongst most Native American tribes was to give a gift in exchange for one given to them, so they more than likely gave the pistol to Greyback.

What puts this Predator above others in the series is that it takes what we know but actually comes up with creative ways to use that knowledge to keep us guessing. We know Predators can see body heat so they introduce something to counteract it. The 3 laser target is arguably one of the most well known parts of it's weapon but it takes it turns that around and has three spear things that at first seem primitive. Until we find out they track the laser which sets up the incredibly inventive way she takes out the Predator. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of earlier films it has some of the most creativity of any of them save the first one. The sequels used the same weapons but just made the Predators bigger. Now we're back to a more agile hunter who actually jumps through the trees. That's why this movie is so highly regarded.

i feel like the lack of Armor and more advanced Predators from earlier movies is because their species (like you mentioned too) is due to them adapting to the hunt. Humanity invented better weapons and tactics, more efficient killing tools basically and "we" got more dangerous and an even worthier prey to hunt, the reason why the predator species comes to earth basically regularly. and they had to adapt and evolve as well for the hunt in order to not get their asses kicked all the time. absolutely fantastic movie, one of the greatest sequal/prequals ever, Amber Midthunder was absolutely fantastic and when they announced her casting i was immediatly interested as i loved her in FX' LEGION series. Dan Trachtenberg did a great job on this movie for sure.

Loving this movie more every time I rewatch it. The CGI is a bit wonky at times, but that's forgivable. Some minor anachronisms, too. Loved that they portrayed Native Americans as regular people, without the usual tropes and stereotypes. Gotta give props for how brutal it was compared to the previous films. I liked how the Predator cheated every time it was at a disadvantage, the previous ones did that, too. Also liked how much damage it took over the course of the movie without really trying to avoid it, that says as much about its mentality as it cloaking up to avoid defeat; It's walking the edge. It takes risks like any thrillseeker, but it's not suicidal.

"...until it [predator] went invisible like a p*ssy" HAHAHA on a separate note for people that complained that the predator's weapons seemed too simple, just want to point out that the predator has always been about the sport of hunting prey - that's why they don't attack organisms that aren't a threat or are trapped and helpless. humans don't hunt deer with RPG and drone missiles - they use rifles and sometimes bows because it's all about the hunt that makes the trophy

Sigh. They have the weaponry. They will not use more advanced weapons against primitive prey. In their mind what fun would it be if they brought in a plasma caster (shoulder cannon) for example if all their prey had was bows and very primitive gunpowder weapons. They won't use ranged weapons if their prey only has melee weapons. Unless they are hunting extremely dangerous prey like Xenomorphs that is.

Thanks for responding to the suggestion and for the appreciative reaction. When Dark Skies and Prey were announced as summer releases, I was interested in how the indigenous cultures were going to be presented. When Naru's brother told her she didn't bring it home, that's about how Dark Skies went over. With Jhane Myers as a consultant and producer, I think this turned out much better. One point, this film feels like an older western or sci-fi movie (maybe that's why some feel its beginning is slow). The teepee and den entryways reminded me of John Ford's highly influential The Searchers (1956) as did the outdoor photography (David Lean, studied the film before making Lawrence of Arabia, the overhead shots reminded me of the more current Sicario and Jurassic Park). Not surprisingly, The Searchers also deals with The Comanche. Director Trachtenberg cites Mad Max: Fury Road as an influence. Being as old as dirt, IMO, current reactors and audiences will miss out on these older callbacks (anything before the mid 70's) but know those after the first Predator. In an online discussion. someone working props, said the cigar used was the same type that Clint Eastwood smoked in The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly, that they had reference access to a private indigenous collection, and that they were actually tribally blessed before filming started. The Eagle Staff is considered the first flag of the Americas by indigenous people and is presented before other flags. In spite of how it was released, the film has gotten tremendous word of mouth and a worldwide reaction. Thanks for your reaction. :)

This film is so great and like a lot of people I was not expecting it to be that good but was pleasantly surprised , I personally would rank it as the best of the sequels after all you can't top the original it's a total classic . Prey works so well due to several factors the cinematography is truly beautiful using full use of the countryside , the performances are top notch Amber and Dakota are real standouts ( hard to belive this is Dakotas first acting role) the action and fight scenes are very well choreographed, the Predator rampaging through the fur trappers is particularly awesome ,and the other thing that really stood out for me was the amazing score by Sarah Schachner which is moving and atmospheric and thrilling really cant stop listening to it at the moment . I am really glad they decided to have the Predator back in a forest outdoor setting if done right it can be so eerie and creepy rather than being in another generic town , city ,the only minor criticism I have is the other guys in the tribe where rather clichéd " you can't do this because you are a woman " type guys and some of the terms used like bleed out felt out of place as they are pretty modern but these are very minor criticisms of a fantastic film . I have seen Amber in an episode of Banshee and She had a recurring role in Legion , here's hoping after Prey she gets a lot more film roles now , would love to see this on a big screen here's hoping it may get theatrical release .

Hey Schmitts! Great reaction! I loved how the call backs in the film kind of mirrored your call backs to your reaction to _Predator_ , especially the scary audio cuts. Having seen it recently, _Prey_ definitely stands on its own in a certain way, but you still get to enjoy bits and pieces of connection to previous film, like Adolini's pistol. I particularly liked how Naru (I think it's supposed to be pronounced as Nardu?) grows throughout the film, as she starts as clumsy and uncertain (just like her brother Taabe points out), but grows more determined and daring later on. Regards the (Feral) Predator himself, the director Dan Trachtenberg (who also did _10 Cloverfield Lane_ , a really great film!) explained how this individual comes from a different culture and location on their home planet, which explains his looks, and is quite young and inexperienced, which explains his character and actions too. And you should definitely check out _Predators_ , it's actually a pretty nice film. Samantha, thank you for clarifiying since I wondered many times. (For the record, TBR, at first I thought you were German or Dutch!) If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend you to check out Chris Eyre's _Smoke Signals_ as it was one of the, if not the first Hollywood film with exclusively Native Americans both on and behind the screen. It isn't exactly a comedy as it was marketed but has many funny and clever moments.

WE FINALLY HAVE A GENUINELY AMAZING PREDATOR MOVIE SINCE THE FIRST ONE!!!! Don’t get me wrong, I really like Predator 2 and Predators, but this one doesn’t just beat them, it kills them, rips out their skulls and spines, and hangs them on its wall. Not only did it have intense action sequences, but both the director and writer managed to perfectly balance that tightrope of tension by both showing that this Predator is a truly terrifying and formidable threat while also not making him OP with his weaponry, thereby giving the people a fighting chance. On top of that I absolutely LOVED the portrayal of the Comanche Nation. Showing how they were and still are some of the best fighters, best horse riders and best hunters that have ever lived, while also showing how close knit of a community they are. I really loved how they went back and forth between English and Comanche when speaking with each other, next time I see this movie I’m watching the Comanche Cut where they speak Comanche throughout the whole movie. But my favorite part of this movie is seeing the story of Naru. She is honestly one of the most tenacious and badass characters I have seen in action or sci-fi movies in a long time. Amber Midthunder managed to be as much of a badass as freaking Arnold Schwarzenegger! And thank god they didn’t kill that adorable dog 🐕!

That's a nice catch about the mask. In this film it gets knocked off a couple of times (which eventually results in it being used to actually kill the Pred) but the 1987 mask is clearly shown to require detaching. @@horror_fam0847 dunno about the more advanced gear part but they would not use a plasma caster against prey that doesn't have anything comparable. It's dishonorable and not sporting. When Billy put down all his weapons in part 1 and pulled his machete out the Predator fought him with its wrist blades.

Nice reactions to the Prey film, Daniel & Samantha!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Amber Midthunder did an excellent job carrying this film! I have thought about this and some people have echoed it as well, if the Predators have ships that can fly to other planets, shouldn't they have advanced weaponry as well? Some of their weapons seem advanced like the drones and the mask with the targeting system, but others seem more primitive. Perhaps the reason is, they choose different weapons depending on who or what they are hunting?
