Mr. Miyagi's given name is inconsistent in the series. In The Karate Kid, the name Hideo Miyagi, which translates to “hero” Miyagi and is the real given name of Pat Morita’s brother, can be seen stamped in reverse on his World War II dog tags, being used as a keychain for the car he gives Daniel as a birthday present. As written in Japanese characters in The Karate Kid Part II, his name is 宮城成義 (Miyagi Nariyoshi), which translates as Nariyoshi Miyagi, which is also seen on his gravestone in Cobra Kai. He is called Keisuke Miyagi at the start of The Next Karate Kid. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Miyagi

Honestly, I think the reason Sato was so bitter has also got to do with the time in which they lived. When Miyagi says to Sato: "What has happened to you?" And he looks back with this almost depressed stare? Since Miyagi was old enough to serve during WW2 and Sato was still living in Okinawa during the war it stands to reason that Sato saw and had some involvement with the battle of Okinawa (one of the bloodiest in the Pacific theatre) and maybe Sato focusing all his anger and anguish and PTSD from that on his grudge with Miyagi is why he was so relentless with trying to fight Miyagi.

I somewhat disagree. The war destroyed practically EVERYTHING on the island. Sato bought huge chunks of the ruined land. His family had a fishing empire of sorts before the war. Clearly Sato took his fleet of boats and fled somewhere during the battle, and returned later to the ruins as one of the few functioning enterprises. He is probably sullen because he knows in his heart he is a betrayer of his people. Or not 😅

That opening scene with Kreese...it's just genius ! Mr. Miyagi just let him hurt himself, an unbalanced damaged Vietnam vet who just know how to answer to life with aggression. Using his own words of teaching against him is so clever to show him the ridicule of the situation. A good teacher would have learned, realize the truth and changed his way. Anger and hatred must stop one day...It's only self-destruction in the end.

I was in high school when this one came out, and I must have seen it about five times in the theater. Not only was it a really amazing sequel, I developed a serious crush on Tamlyn Tomita (Kumiko) who has since this film become one of my favorite charcter actresses having done big screen films (The Day After Tomorrow, Come See The Paradise, The Joy Luck Club, & Picture Bride) and television (most recently on 'Star Trek: Picard' as the villainous Romulan Commodore Oh). One look on her IMDb page and you can see she has done tons of work, especially on TV. My personal favorites of her roles: Lt. Commander Laurel Takashima on the 'Babylon 5' pilot; Julia Chang, mother of Mike Chang on the muscial series 'Glee'; and Lt. Commander Tracy Manetti on the series 'J.A.G.' which she played with a Texas accent. She is Okinawan-Filipino American..born in Okinawa and raised in L.A. The Asian guy who looked so familiar from 'Jurassic Park' is B.D. Wong...and you should recognize him as he is in EVERYTHING it seems like. He has done movies & TV, as well as voice work. Specifically playing Shang in the animated 'Mulan' films (his character sings "I'll Make A Man Out Of You...but it's Donny Osmond who sings it). He also appeared on Broadway with John Lithgow in the play 'M.Butterfly' and won just about every theatrical award possible for his role including the Tony Award. When the play was turned into a film it starred Jeremy Irons (in the Lithgow role) and John Lone (in Wong's role)...and it wasn't very good as a film. Some of my favorite films B.D. was in: 'Father of the Bride 1 & 2' with Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Martin Short. He played Howard Weinstein, assistant to Martin Short's Franck, and is hysterically funny holding his own with Short and Martin. Another is 'The Freshman' with Marlon Brando, Matthew Broderick, and Maximillian Schell as Edward. A small early role, but he does interesting things with it. The black actor playing the G.I. in the bar with the ice sheets that you recognized was Clarence Gilyard, Jr. He was Theo, the safecracker in 'Die Hard' ("Oh my god the quarterback is TOAST!"). Sundown, the RIO in 'Top Gun', and for many years was James Trivette on 'Walker Texas Ranger' with Chuck Norris. While I am not a fan of the next Karate Kid film...it does have two villains that are definitely memorable, one of which returned in the recent season of 'Cobra Kai'. You'll see soon enough.

In the first movie Ali clearly stated that contact with the head was allowed. Neither Johnny nor Dutch were issued penalties for kicking opponents heads, so why do people keep saying the crane kick was illegal? Plus, every organization sets thier own tournament rules. 1. Johnny was able to stand up to Kreese because of a deleted scene in the first KK where Daniel told him "Don't you ever wonder if your sensei is wrong?" and planted the seeds of doubt. 2. The reason why Ali and Lucille weren't in this sequel is that this story was about Mr. Miyagi, not Daniel. 3. Her name is pronounced YOU-KEY-AYE. 4. The actress who played Yukie had acted opposite Pat Morita in 'HAPPY DAYS'. She played Arnold's betrothed in the episode when Arnold gets married and moves away from Milwaukee. 5. Technically, the O-bon dance performed by Kumiko does not exist. Tamilyn's mother choreographed the dance moves before filming to help give some Japanese authenticity. 6. Kadena AB is right smack dab next to Tome Village. Okinawa was key to winning the war in the Pacific in WWII. 7. The casualty tally that Mr. Miyagi quotes to Daniel is real. The Japanese army decimated the villages. 8. Pat Morita developed spinal tuberculosis as a child and had to stay in a body cast off/on for 9 years. As soon as he recovered, he was sent to join his family at the 'relocation center' in AZ. 7. The Tome Village in the movie does not exist. The real village was so run down that the filmmakers rebuilt the location in Hawaii. The O-bon dance was filmed on a set in California. 8. 'Glory of Love' was written for ROCKY IV. It was nominated for 'Best Song' at the Oscars, but lost to Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away'. 9. Mr. Miyagi didn't have to take a commercial flight. Being a MEDAL OF HONOR recipient he is allowed free travel on any government transport. 10. The 'Crane Kick' is not an illegal move; Johnny kicked his opponent in the face for a win, and Dutch kicked Daniel in the face and was given a point. Anything above the waist is fair game. 11. I believe Yukie was able to find Miyagi, because once he got to Hawaii, Miyagi wrote his dad to tell him he'd arrived safely. And I am pretty sure Miyagi wrote his dad a few more times after the war to reassure him that he was alright. All Yukie had to do was go to the military installation (where she probably worked) and do a data search on her lost love. Since Miyagi was a MOH recipient, he would be known since there weren't that many recipients--at least not then.

Good points. Especially good point on #11. Plausible. The Japanese took mindless cruelty to their most insane levels in China. setting off a series of destructive events that destabilized Asia for decades. The only part of the plots of these movies is how characters were written out in the beginning of KK2 and KK3 with "she dumped me!" speeches. The scene with Mr. Miyagi confronting John Kreese at the beginning of The Karate Kid Part II was originally supposed to happen at the end of the first Karate Kid movie. It was also going to include all of the Cobra Kai students taking off their black belts and leaving the Cobra Kai. Director John G. Avildsen felt it was better to end the first movie on a more triumphant note, with the camera on a smiling Mr. Miyagi after Daniel wins the tournament, and it was decided that the original end scene would be moved to the beginning of The Karate Kid Part II.

Flashback sequences were VERY common in sequels in the 80s and earlier. You have to remember how people saw movies then .... you saw them in theater, or not ... then never saw them again unless they ran on TV. HBO was a huge hit on early cable because it ran recently out of theater movies on heavy rotation. Cable TV and VHS movie rentals became increasingly common from 1985 to 1990, at which point they were ubiquitous. Flashbacks helped people that never saw the first movie "catch up", served up cheap nostalgia for those that had seen the earlier movie(s), and were also cheap padding to the runtime!

Elisabeth Shue apparently approached Ralph at a Mets game years after the fact and just balled him out about how they wrote her off in KK2. Obviously, he was like 'I just act, hun'. 'I don't make these decisions.' The crazy part about this is Ralph and Liz hadn't crossed paths since they filmed KK1 together but it meant that much to her for her to talk to Ralph about it decades later when Ralph was largely inactive acting and supporting his family. I always found that story amusing.

Actually around 4:12, this scene was actually filmed during the first KK, and the filmmakers were going to use it as the real ending. However, the filmmakers changed their minds as they already had the real ending that was perfect. They thought this ending would have brought it down a notch, hence the perfect beginning to this movie. The KK remake had the same ending with Jackie Chan fighting the teacher and they filmed it, but was quickly used as an extra deleted scene in a DVD.

Not entirely accurate. The Miyagi/Kreese scene was in the script for the first film. But they never actually filmed it. Avildsen was happy with the tournament ending the movie and didn't feel it was necessary to shoot that parking lot scene. He saved it for the sequel thinking the first film would be a big success. I have to agree with some of the others Daniel was not the bad guy in the movie nor is he in the Cobra Kai series. That started out as a satire video on the youtube and it's not meant to be taken seriously. I agree Daniel was a hot head but Johnny was definitely the bully who instigated a lot of the situations and Daniel instigated only once with the water hose prank out of payback for what they did to him in the past. There is also deleted scenes from the movie where Johnny harassed Daniel that is now on the youtube if you what to check that out. The real villain of the movie was Kreese as Johnny was product of his teachings. In the Cobra Kai series, neither Johnny nor Daniel are the bad guy but just flawed men with good and bad qualities to them which makes the show less black and white and more shades of gray. I do hope you react to the Karate Kid part 3. There is also final movie The Next karate Kid with Hillary Swank and then you can watch the Cobra Kai series on Netflix.

Not because he was the god guy and Daniel the bad guy, but because everyone treats Daniel like the innocent hero when at least half the issues are his fault. I do it to bring some karmic balance. All that said, if Johnny's Kai buddies didn't all jump in when there was a fight I'd say Johnny didn't do anything extra evil. The worst things he did were throwing Ali's radio on the ground, ran Daniel off the road and kissing Ali so Daniel would react like the childish punk he is. Against that, Daniel jumped into an obviously emotional argument the 2 were having, sucker punched Johnny, soaked his weed and acted like the worst kind of dick after the Kobra Kai moratorium on beating punks. The way Daniel acted was like he was HOPING to get killed at the tournament and even as a child when I first saw the movie I was hoping this along with him. Anyway, my whole point is that neither Johnny nor Daniel are out-and-out bad guys in the first movie. The only one who qualifies for that title is the Kobra Kai instructor. @@sam12six Your justifications for Johnny’s actions in the first Karate Kid are horrible and one of the main reasons why the premise of Cobra Kai is so inherently flawed. Johnny was meant to be a bad guy in the first film, and Kreese was just an even bigger guy for basically influencing him and the other kids from Cobra Kai to be plain jerks. Daniel was a hothead, yet that doesn’t excuse Johnny and his friends basically beating him up severely. I’m tired of people giving bullies and narcissists a pass. When you base your entire show on a joke video called “Daniel was the real villain”, when the film directly contradicts that silly statement, then you have a show that is faulty due to its faulty foundation. Johnny comes in the show behaving in an almost entitled manner, yet the show frames Daniel as being an egotistical tyrant. As for Chozen, he was definitely a bad guy, but this guy was teached in anger and hate by Sato. All of his life he was trained to hate Miyagi… so in a sense I think he’s a tragedy… I don’t excuse his action, but when Sato turned on him at the end, he was lost… and lost his mind. Sato has lot to atone for. Anyway, such a good film!

It’s one of the first love stories I ever remember. Peter Cetera’s “Glory of Love” is an absolute staple of 80’s music, too. I have the 7” record around here somewhere.

Cobra Kai is based off the KZfaq video "Danielle is the real bully". It's inspired by that video in the sense that everything is not always as clear as it seems. The series is pretty self aware with a few nods and winks to the audience. It's worth watching the KZfaq video before the series, just for perspective.

Nah. It even mocks that idiotic video. That video was a meme! You have to live your whole life on Twitter, to think that Daniel was the bully in The Karate Kid. Johnny is objectively a nasty piece of work in that movie. But it was always made clear that he was just influenced by Kreese. There's no way in Hell Daniel was the bully. And there's also no way in Hell that Johnny wasn't. Yeah, he was having a topugh time and had some bad influences, but what bully doesn't? Doesn't mean it's suddenly not bullying. The movie makes it plenty clear. The worst you can say about Daniel, is that he's a hot-head. Johnny gets his own mini redemption arc, too. But that doesn't detract from the fact that5 karate black belts beating the shit out of the new kid constantly, is straight-up bullying.

@@ashscott6068 The video is satire. It's not meant to be taken literally. It just points to the notion that there are two sides to every story. Also never been on twitter.

The beginning recap: you have to remember that the eighties were a completely different time. Hollywood thought they were getting away with things by "making the same movie all over again and charging people for it". I know we don't see sequels like that nowadays, but Hollywood boardrooms did back then. They couldn't assume that people had it on Home Video, and of course, there was no such thing as the internet and streaming. When you made a sequel in Hollywood, you had to make the movie completely stand alone. In other words, you had to make it in such a way where the audience member was not required to see previous films to completely enjoy the one that they were currently watching. Older sequels usually had recaps of the previous film, even if it was just in exposition (think: Ripley explaining about the alien). Related, post The Empire Strikes Back, sequels almost always picked up right where the last one left off. Then, they started a trend where you would just pick up with your protagonist a few years later, or at another stage of life. Eventually, home video, then the internet, then streaming, then the Marvel Universe changed everything into what we have now.

Actually the whole recap thing was not so much an "80's" thing as it was more of a directing choice that was made by Sylvester Stallone and later by John G, Avildsen who directed the Karate Kid trilogy.
@odiumgeneris729

@@cwell510 No. It's not an "actually, but". That's what Hollywood thought about sequels. You watch any documentary about how Hollywood saw everything from The Godfather 2 to Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan, to Rocky 2 to Aliens to Terminator 2 to The Empire Strikes Back...That's how they saw it. You watch any sequel from the 80s and at the very least there is exposition about what happened in the movie previously. They did not expect people to have seen the installment beforehand. Of course, with notable exceptions , like the Star Wars trilogy. Something else that was true back then was that sequels almost never made more than the original. Therefore, studios decreased the budget for most sequels, which affected their quality as well. You already proved you don't know what you're talking about, so I'll give you the last word. I'm not going to respond anymore.

@@cwell510 Yeah, I think Avildsen was just mimicking Stallone's approach in Rocky II(which ironically was a sequel to a film Avildsen directed). Recap the first film and then begin the sequel exactly where the previous one left off.

As with the Rocky Sequels (after 2), the Karate Kid franchise's strength comes from the relationship between Daniel and Myagi. Where the stories start to falter, the films are picked up by the sincerity and intimacy between the leads.

I liked this sequel just as much as the original. We get a back story about Mr Miyagi. KK3 once again writes the previous characters out leaving viewers thinking WTF?! KK3 is just okay. I think after KK3 you can stop watching the movies and can then transfer over to the Cobra Kai series if you want. A small spoiler…some characters from KK2 will make an appearance in Cobra Kai S3! That was so cool to see with old grudges revisited with a new twist! Happy viewing 🙂

Something that I really liked that sadly the writers regressed on was the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. In the first movie that were not just student and teacher, but friends with leanings toward father and son. In this one they almost become like brothers at some points, especially when Daniel consoles Mr. Miyagi after the passing of his father. Then sadly in the 3rd movie it feels like it regresses back to student and teacher without the father/ son undertones.

The 3rd movie was a rehashed mess. The 4th was even worse and the reboot with Jackie Chan was an insult to the franchise. The "Cobra Kai" series brought back honor to the franchise.

Quick note: Anyone who says the Crane kick was illegal is flat wrong. Ali tells Daniel at the beginning of the tournament that strikes to the head are legal. Also, in the very same match, Johnny sweeps Daniel's leg and then kicks him in the face. Real world karate tournaments of the time did allow "controlled strikes" to the head (source: I used to compete). Now, there was supposedly a scene scripted and either not filmed or deleted where the ref tells the fighters "no strikes to the face," but since it was not in the film, we still have to go by Ali's explanation of the rules. Where the kick becomes hazy is that it clearly causes Johnny to recoil in pain, suggesting it might not have been a "controlled strike." On the other hand, as noted, Johnny earlier kicks Daniel to the face with a strike that knocks Daniel to the ground. Johnny also punches Daniel in the face, another strike that knocks Daniel to the ground. So clearly the ref is allowing face strikes to count, and if Johnny wants to cry foul, he needs to also admit that he also should have been disqualified. The much more questionable technique Daniel used was the strike to the back when Johnny was face down. The fact that it was both a strike to the back AND caused injury (bloodied Johnny's nose) should have been at least a warning, if not a loss of point to Daniel. HOWEVER, having said all of that, it is a fantastic storytelling hook that Johnny would begrudge that kick all these years.

About 5 minutes in and, while I loved your first reaction and am excited for this one, I'm sorry you had to deal with those "Daniel is the real bully" morons. That YT video was meant to be satirical, but a group of uneducated people took it seriously fsr. Johnny was clearly the bully (no matter the revisionist history he gives in Cobra Kai). The crane kick was not illegal; I even saw a good article on that the other day; I could find and link if u want. 😉

11:48 The third movie and The Next Karate Kid unfortunately aren't written as well. But Cobra Kai actually goes back and provides retroactive context to make the movies even better. Also, Daniel isn't the villain of Cobra Kai. It's just that instead of him being the protagonist this time, Johnny Lawrence is the main protagonist (at least early on) and the two of them are still at odds.
