I haven't watched Speed in so many years. I saw it in the theater, actually. This cemented Keanu Reeves' career but it was also Sandra Bullock's breakthrough role. She had done some movies before, like "Love Potion No. 9" and most recently at the time would've been "Demolition Man". After Speed, she was in the higher-pay bracket with starring roles. I think "The Net" was her next big one. [EDIT] next was "While You Were Sleeping", then The Net. Dennis Hopper was always great in the villain role. See "Blue Velvet" if you haven't yet. I think that's Hopper's most iconic villain role while "Easy Rider" was his and Jack Nicholson's breakthrough.

Keanu wasn't respected at all though, he was known, but I remember him being the butt of the jokes when people talked about bad actors. It's one of the reasons why the Matrix needed a bit to hit it's stride as people rolled their eyes when they heard it was a movie with Keanu.
@YouHaventSeenMeRight
@YouHaventSeenMeRight 2 жыл бұрын
@@Robalogot It also didn't help that he starred in Johnny Mnemonic a few years before the Matrix, which was based on the cyberpunk story by William Gibson of the same name, which bombed massively. Hey TBR and Sam You realize that Speed is essentially "Die HArd" on a bus. ------- "Die Hard" became the prototype script for making an action movie in the '90s. ------- When directors or writers started off the pitch meeting to execs they would go, "Picture Die HArd on a bus, or Die Hard on a mountain cliff." Cliff HAnger has the same thrill a minute as Die HArd and Speed.

Watching Keanu develop his talent over the years has been an interesting ride. From his early typecasting - first as a burnout (Bill & Ted, Parenthood), then to an action hero (Speed, Point Break, Johnny Mnemonic) - to trying to branch out into Shakespeare (Much Ado About Nothing) and accent work (Bram Stoker's Dracula), and now seeing him settle comfortably into his talent as a mature actor. You really have to explore his filmography to see.

Yeah, he's done a lot and tried a lot. I really hate that people say he was bad in Bram Stoker's Dracula. The only reason people say that is because he had done Bill & Ted right before Dracula, so people had trouble seeing Keanu act or talk differently than his character of Ted Logan. They couldn't accept the transition. I appreciate Keanu's vast pick in characters.

Great Pick! "Speed" was to my knowledge the first type of this fast edited, fast story, no brakes summer block buster, what later became a staple of the 90s and early 2000s. And in my opinion it did it best. Better than "The Rock", better than "Con Air" and so on. For me personally it was the first movie I watched where I literally grapped my seat the whole film through and never got an emotional release - pure adrenaline all 116 minutes.

Yes the 2nd movie is Speed 2 Cruise Control on a Cruise Liner. To put it in perspective, Sandra said it was a movie she was embarrassed to be in because the plot made no sense. IIRC I believe the reason she did it was because of the movie Hope Floats that she wanted to do. Jason Patric filled the role instead for Speed 2. Keanu saw the script and said no to it. Unless you are doing bad movie night at sometime I would not recommend it. But they (Keanu and Sandra) would do another film together called The Lake House.

Glad to see that "The French Connection" made it to your list of movies on your poll (I had suggested that it be submitted). It is far and away the best movie compared to all of the other movies on this poll. This crime thriller won the 1971 Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor (Gene Hackman), Best Director (William Friedkin of "The Exorcist"), Best Film Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor (Roy Scheider from "Jaws"), Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Mixing. It has one of the best car chase sequence one would want to see. Your patreons should vote for this crime thriller; they are are pretty sharp/good (compared to many other groups who are prone to recency bias), so i hope this one gets selected in the future.

Even blowing up the elevator safety brakes now couldn't kill you. Alot has to go wrong for an elevator to free fall. All that being said, elevators can be very dangerous and I have seen some awful stuff while in the industry. I've had some close calls myself. Proceed with caution. 7:55 "Will the mystery guest please sign in...?" Jack was referring to the famous show "What's My Line" in which they always had a mystery guest each week. The show had four famous panelists who attempted to determine the occupation (i.e., "line [of work]") of a guest. In the case of the famous mystery guest each week, the panel sought to determine the identity of the celebrity. Panelists were required to probe by asking only yes-no questions. The panelist who should never be forgotten was Dorothy Kilgallen, the #1 journalist of her day, and, perhaps, of all time- who was murdered on 11/8/65 after she had just recorded live the 11/7/65 episode of What's My Line. The next day she was going to release her article on who really killed John F. Kennedy. Her murder was covered up by the pathetic SCAMerica govt. Anyway- Jack (Keanu Reeves character) was obviously a fan of the show and was waiting for the mystery guest (Howard Payne-extortionist bomber) to "sign in."

This was the directorial debut of Jan De Bont, who was an acclaimed cinematographer on many films. One of the reasons why Reeves and Bullock have been icons since the 1990s. The late Dennis Hopper as one of the best villains of the era. Plus it's considered to be one of the best "Die-Hard" copycats. Winner of several awards including 2 Oscars (Best Sound, Best Sound Editing). Whatever you do, don't see the sequel from 1997. It's totally un-adored.

Oh there are a LOT of action movies like that. I think the most egregious is Con Air, where the ending definitely involves more deaths than if the plane had just been brought down much earlier. Movies skew it so we only care about the main characters. Think of any end of the world type movie. Millions --- sometimes billions --- of people die, but as long as the protagonist and their pets survive, hooray! 😆

This movie was originally written by Graham Yost, who would go on to create the TV series "Justified" several years later. Though, this movie was coming off his his time as a writer on the Nickelodeon kids series "Hey, Dude." Yost had thanked Joss Whedon for having rewritten a vast majority of the dialogue and changing up some of the character personalities, though the SWG wouldn't give him a co-writing credit. He said the studio had wanted to delay shooting 6 weeks after seeing Keanu Reeves' short hair having been cut right before filming was set to begin. They relented and did not delay production, but had little faith in the movie performing well. Only during test screenings when they realized everyone getting up to use the bathroom kept facing the screen while they left the theater did it hit them that maybe they had a surprise hit on their hands. After the movie was a success in theaters, Fox decided to commission a sequel and Graham Yost offered his services to come back and write the sequel. The producers told him they already had a screen writer and his services would not be required. He said that all of the research he had before writing Speed was a 2-hour ride on a public bus, while the person they hired to write the sequel was sent on a 2-week cruise as "research." Needless to say, Keanu did not return for the sequel and it ended up bombing in theaters.

I was still working at L.A. Airport when this was filmed: the area where they had tha bus going in circles, was known as the "remote pads", and at the time, the taxiway that connects the north and south sides of the airport was being moved there. The hangar the bus went through, used to be the TWA maintenance hangar, and the bus used to get everybody off the city bus, is an actual airport shuttle bus, used when passengers need to be moved between planes parked at the remote pads, and the terminals, and they're allowed to drive on the taxiways. The bank ad on the rear of the Santa Monica Bus, was a real ad(!), and that was a real (retired) Santa Monica city bus. And as mentioned, the 105 was still under construction: Nobody ever thought it would happen, because it was supposed to be built in the '60's or '70's, but lots of lawsuits slowed it. (Same freeway used in "Hancock") Three more overlooked but great somewhat suspensful films for 'ya: "Capricorn One" "To Live And Die In L.A." "Falling Down". 🙂
