Well I think that tresh is better represented by dark star tresh. He's pretty much a blackhole, and all blackholes do is consume. Thresh isn't a complicated type villain, with an important backstory or interesting motives. Thresh is a pure evil type villain, whose's backstory doesn't matter and whose motives are unimportant. Overly Sarcastic Productions just recently did a decent video on pure evil type characters, it may be worth checking out.

A maybe fun thing to happen to Thresh as a character moving forward is that he’s become bored of the Shadow Isles and the torturing of spirits and wants to leave so he can “have fun” elsewhere in the world It would certainly give Senna and Lucian a monster so to speak to hunt

i've noticed in recent years how Riot has taken a lot of their villain/antagonist champions and made them deeper and the conflicts more morally grey. Kayle vs Morgana is a good recent example where instead of a pretty clear good vs evil dynamic, its got more of a ridged order vs personal freedom thing. Jayce and Viktor is another good example, instead of Viktor being this megalomaniac mad scientist, he's very calm and friendly and doesn't force people to be made into cyborgs, he just fixes things in somewhat experimental ways and finds emotion to be the main flaw that humanity has, meanwhile jayce is a bit of an asshole. then there's the void creatures who either are more just monsters and animalistic attack dogs, or in vel'koz and the watchers case have a completely different sort of morality then what we know and think in alien ways. and malzahar honestly thinks he's doing the right thing. then with noxus while its still portrayed in an antagonistic light, as an expansionist empire tends to be when the story is told from the side of those who's land they're attacking, i wouldn't describe any of the main noxian characters as evil. like, darius isn't some murder hungry knight and swain isn't this iron fist tyrannical ruler. the main evil noxian character was Darkwill, the guy swain overthrew. even with the darkin, while they are demon-like fallen gods who corrupt and possess people, the main darkin champ, Aatrox, while being very hammy at times and wanting more and more combat, is still sympathetic in that he sees no other way to continue forward and had to become this battle hungry monster to avoid being trapped in a fate worse then death. they made a lot of the conflicts much more about ideals. and most of the champions i would actually call evil are things like demons, corrupt spirits, serial killers, and a war god bear. and then there's thresh. who like you mentioned, just sort of became evil and creepy over time, went a little crazy becoming a sociopath, and possibly caused the ruination of the blessed isles. and he never looked back. he's an undead now, but its not like who he was before means anything. it reminds me of some versions of the Joker, where yes he was originally just some guy, but that person doesn't really matter, he didn't become this evil clown because of some grand goal or ideal. he's just crazy. i kinda want them to keep thresh like that. i mean, i'd be ok with them adding more lore to thresh so more can be done with him, but some tragic sympathetic history and understandable villainous motivation doesn't really fit this guy.

Personally I'd rewrite Thresh's story so that he'd be more like Franz Schimidt, whose life was basically "the King needed an executioner one day, so as he stood on the gallows he picked out one boy at random, and once the deed was done, the boy would be ostracized by the public (since executioners were usually pariahs in medieval society, due to the nature of their work) and thus the boy had no other option but to become an executioner for the rest of his life, as he spent the rest of his days in a place called "the Rat House" which was not a pleasant place, as anyone taken prisoner would be sent there for interrogation and be tortured until they confessed to being guilty". So, my idea would be, make Thresh a citizen of the Kingdom that Kallista and Hecarim come from, his story starting shortly after the failed assassination attempt on the King's life. Upon finding a number of suspects, the King ordered them to be hanged, but his own headsman was suspect as well, so the King needed someone to do the deed in his stead. So, after singling out a young boy from the crowd, and instructing him to perform the execution, the King found himself a new executioner, who would reside within the Kingdoms' dungeon, interrogating anyone the King suspected of being behind the assassination plot. Over time, the boy would grow up to be a tall lad, and as time passed, he would grow accustomed to the atrocities he had to commit, and as the years rolled on, he started to like it. This man would become a dreadful warden, who could do as he pleased with his charges, for the King remained secluded in his personal chambers at all times, along with the cadaver of the assassinated Queen. However, the King's niece returned from her journey and told the King that there was a place where they might find a cure for the Queen, a remote archipelago known as "the Blessed Isles". As they embarked, the King took his trusted Warden with him as part of the retinue, for he suspected his skills might be needed, a suspicion that proved to be true as the native monks refused the King's request, saying that there was no cure for a corpse. Relying on the Warden's expertise with interrogation, the King and his entourage were given passage into the blessed pools, where the Ruination took place. In this perilous moment, the souls of every victim of the Warden's cruelty manifested and descended upon him, hanging him with his own chains. But, the Warden's cruelty and malice was far too powerful, and he endured the Ruination, being reborn as a malevolent wraith, known only as "Thresh". Or, at least, that's my idea.

I think his morality being eroded so totally by the evil artefacts creates this vacuum in him. There is nothing to him, because everything else would have died long ago. This makes him a great background villain, but not a focus one. So, my answer would be that Tresh is great if he is used well.
@ArtumTsumia
@ArtumTsumia 5 жыл бұрын
The interesting idea presented with Thresh is one of eroding away a persons 'morality' (even if this isn't something Riot explicitly focuses on). We can talk about the "banality of evil" and such, but I think it betrays a fundamental ignorance if not revulsion of 'evil'. What would a person become if you stripped them of the 'morality' that made them 'good'? A _pure evil_ character might not have any traits that one wants to empathize with. We talk about them as though there is no goal they have except to be evil. Really though, it seems like a blind eye turned to a dark mirror. If you could understand Thresh's goals, you might see some part of yourself in evil. For most, it's better to write the character off as _pure evil_ as that's not an abyss one wants to gaze into.

I might add that there is a certain morbid curiosity to Thresh's character. Certainly a cruelty, but I'd say that it's deeper than simply cruelty for the sake of cruelty. Take the kind of meticulous person that Thresh was in life, then corrupt that character trait with dark magic. Then once he's been quite corrupted, what does he have left to pursue? Corrupt the whole of the Blessed Isle. Ostensibly fulfilling the goal of the dark artifacts that corrupted him in the first place, asecondary plot point payoff of sorts. For him though, well he get's to satiate that morbid curiosity. How would things fare if these events transpire? Certainly it wouldn't be 'good', but how bad might it me? Inquiring minds would like to know. I personally like a "corruption story", and to be clear _corruption_ isn't necessarily bad. You could have an evil character be 'corrupted' into a good character. Though this is usually rebranded as 'reformed', the underlying theme is present, just inverted.

While Thresh is probably one of my favorite champions, I honestly completely agree with you on how he's kinda boringly simple. And I have to say I think its kinda nice that they added a little bit of character to him in his new lore; as its stated that he grew jealous of his pears in the Blessed Isles, since he was clearly put in a position that would suppress him and keep him away from others.

I think the fact that he IS pure evil, is what scares me the most. Knowing that there was no greater motive or tragic backstory to explain the horrible things he does. That there are people with no empathy, that enjoy hurting other for the sake of it, for inflicting pain. That he is so devoid of any humanity whats so ever, that the only human trait he is left with is cruelty. I'm also kinda torn between leaving him in this state and actually giving him depth. I guess it is a matter of execution, because if Riot ever wanted to change him i would be afraid that they might destroy the state that his in, the Thresh he always was, his personality which is simple but its HIS, its what makes him Thresh. He is iconic just because he is so long in the game and he is a rather "clear" character with "clear" motives. But i also see how a decent change might make him a better character, which i'd love to see. And that makes me think of his older backstory. Being a cruel jailer that was eventually hanged by the prisoners with his own chains, that he used to torture them with. And little me (at that time like 5 years ago or smth) thought that is was SO COOL. And... i kinda still do. The old lore made him a very spooky ghost. It was a story you could tell by the campfire and scare the shit out of people. The irony in it, being killed by his own weapon, and then coming back to "life" to continue hurting others. That story, at least to me, was satisfying. So when they changed it i wasn't too happy, but i still understood why they did it. To connect him to the current lore of Shadow Iles, which was a GREAT lore update btw. When i first saw Thresh in the game i was charmed by his appearance and story rather than his gameplay (i mean that came in second after i played him and in fell in love with it too). Now i'm the old main, since now i don't play him that much (Jhin stole his spotlight), but i do care about the character just as much as i used to. And with Riot games its complicated. They have the power to both fuck something up (Kayle rework, e x i s t a n c e o f K a i s a) and make something so good i'm gonna start screaming in the middle of the road when i read about it (the Odyssey universe, Viktor Jayce lore update, ionia lore changes, Kayn, Swain, Jhin, recent lore changes in Damacia). So yeah, if u managed to get to the end of this comment i'd like to hear some other opinions.

Ya know, for longest time, I’ve hated Thresh’s new lore. He went from a proper sadistic jailer to just a creepy guy that hurts magical living artifacts in ways that seem kinda childish. Cover up the mirror. Read sentences from a book and stop partway. I also found it really stupid that he can get away doing bad things because people are just too creeped out by him to look into his deeds. However... You have a point. His backstory doesn’t really matter. He’s just sadistic for the sake of being sadistic and that’s it. Honestly, you could throw away the human origin entirely and say that he’s just a manifestation of evil on the Isles and it’d be just about the same.

I honestly really like Thresh because he's... yeah, just evil. Partly because, yeah, like you said, banality of evil, doesn't always have a reason, etc, etc. But also on the other- as a spirit of evil, I don't think he needs a reason? He's almost like a deity in that sense. You wouldn't look at, say, an anthropomorphism of death, and ask, "But why do they kill things?" They just do. Thresh feels like he's got a lot of the devil archetypes in him, and I don't really need a motivation for that? Sometimes it's fun to be evil just cuz.

Before this I thought he was a _literal_ warden, like he ran a prison. I always headcanonned that he died when the ruination came along; the prisoners got out, rioted and murdered him, hanging him with chains. Because of that I always wanted a Prison Riot skin for him that was like...all metal, like an iron maiden, like a suit that he'd have to don in the event of another riot.

12:20: I think it would be kinda neat if Thresh went through a cycle of finding some cause or ideal to justify his cruelty, doing more and more terrible things that clashed with his stated motivation, doing something that clashes with it enough that he can't keep pretending, and then finding a new justification. He still seems human enough that he'd want to _feel_ like he wasn't being cruel for cruelty's sake, but he's rotten enough that no ideals can stick. Then he'd still have that "banality of evil" thing, but with enough stuff to focus the character into something interesting. 16:50: I think a hollow-mask motif would be more interesting than a skull/bones motif. Maybe Riot could redesign him so the bones are literally the only thing keeping his otherwise-ragged coat together, making Thresh look substantial, but on closer inspection tears in the fabric (leather?) reveal that there's nothing there? Again, banality of evil without being boring. 3:35: ...So, Thresh tortures the mirror-spirit by playing emo peek-a-boo with it? 5:30: Eh...I can't blame them. I've watched enough horror movies to know that that's the best way to be the monster's next victim (which never clues in the other survivors somehow).

my thresh visual and lore rework idea; visual; get rid of all the bones and skulls motifs, with maybe his face as exception. Double down on the chains, and add some crying/tortured looking faces. Also make his coat more like a robe. Story, in a nutshell; Thresh used to be a demacian interrogator that took joy in pain. This all changed when he was made to torture a loved one or family member, maybe his significant other. He looked to change his life and became a monk on the blessed isles (i think was the name of shadow isles before? i keep forgetting HA). He was tasked with being the monastery's artificer, taking care of the evil artifacts they kept for safekeeping. Over time, however, he started hearing their voices. Taunting him. Reminding him of who he truly, honestly, is. Telling him no one would blame him if he used violence to shut them up. And, after a while, he did. He got crueler and crueler as time passed. Lying to himself it was just to make them crying. To shut up their taunts, whails and cries. But inside he knew he was starting to enjoy it. That dark part of his mind grew in influence. The thing with the human prisoner hapoens yada yada people disappear yada yada viego shows up and promises him endless souls to torture if he lets him in the vault and when the ruination happens, thresh dies in the blast of magic and gets entangled with a hooked chain whip that is a darkin weapon. A darkin that fancies themself the aspect of pain, a self-appointed title. All this happening at once creates the being Thresh, the undead host to this 'aspect of pain'. A being forever tortured by his own undeniable joy in torturing others, in inflicting harm, spurred on by a Darkin that relishes in pain of all kinds, including thresh his own internal pain. this would give thresh a little more depth and opportunity for development, while still letting him be an unquestionable evil.

I think that Thresh no longer having and prominent goals to strive for shows what the ruination meant for him. He no longer has any large ambitions because he no longer needs them, as things stand he is immortal and simply wishes to live his version of a life of luxury. In a way he already won. I think this puts him in an interesting position as it makes him a simple goal to specify the focus of Senna and Lucian's journey without just having every shadow isles character have a 2v1 with them.

The Lore that Thresh has right now is not his original Lore. He used to be a jail warden who loved to torture his prisoners. At some point he started to drape himself in the very chains he used for his torture so his victims would he the clanging approaching. He was still the same blant evil guy who enjoyed inflicting psychological trauma. One day the prisoners revolted and hung him with his own chains, unfortunately that was the day of the ruination and it turned thresh during his dying breath into what he is now. This way at least his outfit is explained.

I think the simplicity of the design is in service to the gameplay. As you've noted, Thresh's design is really drab and colorless despite the neat details and the only eye catching parts are the hands, the hook, the lantern, and the head. Your eyes will naturally be drawn towards the hands (For windup animations for enemies to react to), to the Hook (For Q, E, and Basic attacks and their hitbox/ranges, most notably whether you are in melee or range distance since melee range AA have a different animation) and to the lantern (for allies to notice and click on) as well as the head (For Thresh's hurtbox, positioning and movement) Since all the parts that need to be communicated are communicated, then the rest of the design, much like the lore, is perfunctory. Thresh doesn't get extra bells or whistles as that might draw too much attention away from the parts that matter when a huge teamfight breaks out and the second-to-second choices matter.

I think it's important to recognize Thresh's initial lore when analyzing him because he was kinda painted to be a horror story villain and his backstory and personality don't really matter when you think like that. It doesn't really matter who Thresh is or what lead him to become that person, what's important is the fear he provokes. Cunning cruelty, unerring chase, draggings chains, horrible torture and complete entrapment. There's a reason his login theme was an ironic nursery tune. All of that was kinda lost over time, and I think that plays a big role into why Thresh seems so hollow as a character.

With champions like Thresh it's also quite important to mention how his character is represented in-game, as both of his playstyles represent what he is all about. First of all, there is the support playstyle, with death sentence being a tool to capture and torture people. It certainly does inflict agony on you to get hit by that thing, being slowly dragged towards your doom. Then his flay being yet annother tool to fling you around and inflict pain on you with his chains, forcing you wherever he wants you to go, preventing escape, all that being rounded up by his ultimate literally locking enemies stuck inside it within walls of pain. He has little to no burst damage this way, instead he has this slow drawn out playstyle where he representatively tortures his enemies to death. Contrasting that is the AD playstyle, which works around the whole concept of his chains being a symbol of fear to his victims, as the noise of him dragging them around would be the announcement for iminent gruesome torture. And the whole AD thresh combines the slow fighting style of a support with the intimidation and fear caused by that first autoattack, that doesnt really have much of a follow up behind it. To be honest all this goes a little better with his old lore (as it used to be upon his release) but its one of the main reasons why Thresh is my favourite champion design in League.

I think I love Thresh's nothing backstory. Because sometimes our most evil, horrible people in our real world have no reason behind the evil. Ted Bundy was just your average everyday guy. But he murdered many. Thresh is the emptiness behind the evil. There's nothing behind the mask. Masks are used to hide one's real face behind a fascade, but her, the fascade is all that's left. What remained of Thresh is no longer there, if it ever existed. There is only the evil. It's almost like a Michael Myers type. The Shape.

Well the dude was pretty much locked away(not really) in guarding all those items. The evil just made him go insane and so he didn't know what to do and so he felt pain and the only way to remove that was just to give pain back to the evil. Which then he didn't realize it wasn't fixing him since his insanity already took over. I mean the dude probably never saw the outside the day he was assigned to guard that chamber. They were like ok he is very strong so let's just lock him up until he dies to guard these things and never visit him to make sure he isn't going insane or anything. Pretty much thresh is a guy going mad because he didn't get his favorite food and had no Wi-Fi to watch Netflix.

I literally can't play Thresh without his High Noon skin lmao, his base is so boring to me. The High Noon splash makes him look like someone who is resting after a hard day of evil work but then I realised that the personality I'd attribute to that - a hard working guy with almost blue collar ideals towards work who happens to do evil but just because that's his job we all got to eat - is already canon with Pyke. Which I guess is why Pyke is the coolest.

I guess the best way of giving him some objective without doing much is to establish a real bound with Lucian, like Thresh the entity who has condemned an Island in suffering, who lived the late of his life as a psycho murderer faces a demon hunter, crush his wife with a hook give all the scars he could before he escaped and even so he wasn't done with him, because after all that he couldn't break him, and it fucking messed with Thresh.

I very much enjoyed this episode and I absolutely agree with the assessment that Tresh is like an edgy Saturday-morning cartoon villain! “Evil for the sake of evil” is a great way to describe his character and personally I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I, for one, happen to like those kind of characters! Not every villain needs to be a commentary on society or have layers and layers of complexity. Those things should generally be reserved for the BBEG. It’s okay to have “lesser” villains that are just doing their own thing, much like Thresh is doing in the short stories. He’s like an NPC, just hanging out in the Shadow Isles, doing his thing, being a wicked skeleton warden! He knows his place, he knows his territory, and he’s not looking to expand it! He’s just a guy who loves what he does... torture.

@@calmcat8073 I imagine a pretty easy and suitable way to give him more is a goal of conquest. After all, he was the original creator of the Immortal Bastion, the Noxian capital. He could be like an embodiment of conquest, similar to how Thresh is an embodiment of cruelty.

I think he should esentially remain just as a cruel villain, pure evilness. They could deepen in how he was little by little corrupted, how he tortures his victims and for what he uses them. There is no point in giving elevated or deep reasons for every evil champion. Maybe it could be interesting in describing what he feels doing that, focusing on his psychology, since it is a psycopath human mind kept in an immortal body which he utterly accepts. P. D: it is remarkable how you encourage people to donate to other youterbers in case they enjoy more others youtubers and they way of managing the hate.

I think his lore and design fit perfectly with what he's trying to accomplish in game, which is a huge deal when it comes to playable video game characters. He is weak on his own having spells that are almost purely CC based, yet he is overly aggressive relying on others to "finish the job". He is a sadistic maniac who wants to torture souls more than anything, so he is even willing to ally himself with others if they further his goal of collecting souls. If he is outsmarted or found alone he usually loses, due to him being a support, which also fits his evil theme. If you take his abilities and role in the game into consideration, his simple lore will make a lot more sense and works well to capture his end game fantasy.

I feel like it's the same problem with Thresh as other characters. The evil for evils sake is great they just need to lean into it harder. Like zyra being a plant monster or the void champs being shapeless nothing horrors, or most any other champ. If riot looked at their champs and said, "ok, these ideas are good and the stories are nice.....let's lean into it x10." Would probably "fix" or make "better" the visual and written art of their champs in general and they can always tweek later.

Nah, Thresh is a monster, a avatar of evil or agony. To me he has that same feel of a Lovecraftian horror or god, or maybe their opposite, as they aren't inheretly evil, we are just dust to them. Thresh is as inheretly evil as they are neutral.

Honestly, I much prefer Thresh's original lore. More specifically, I prefer the original description of who he was in life. He was a sadistic warden who endlessly tortured his prisoners, until they eventually got loose and killed him by hanging him from his own chains. It not only gives a bit of a folktale element to him (much like Kalista), but it also gives that brief moment of satisfaction to see Thresh get his punishment, only to snatch it away when you learn that he returns as a wraith.
