Check out the keyboard rig of Deep Purple keyboardist, Don Airey. Obviuously, he uses a Hammond organ, but he also has a lot of synths on-stage. In particular, he cherishes his Moog synth, and he treats it with a couple of TC Electronic effects: a Nova Delay to create a full and rich sound and a Nova Modulator for high quality flanger effects. On the Hammond he uses a Nova Reverb for creating a classic Hammond Spring effect.
Don has kindly provided a diagram of his setup:

When Lord left back in '02 there was only one person who could replace him, and that was Don. He pays his respect by playing "the obvious", but he adds so much more by playing what he himself likes. He adds to the music, and replacements seldom do that. Even Lord himself liked Don and what he did, and do, to THE band!!! Don, as a diehard Purple fan, I have to say... You're the man, and you're the only one to do it justice!!!

After the sad passing of Keith Emerson in March for me we only have three virtuoso maestros on the keyboards left now ...Rick Wakeman, Don Airey and Jordan Rudess. Don is a phenomenal keyboard player and doesn't get the credit he deserves...and hes such a nice guy.

I think that Don only had Jon's Hammond C3 during the Bananas-Tour which was the tour after Jon left the band. It was in terrible shape and the last thing I heard was that it'll be displayed in a museum some day. The Hammond in the video isn't a C3 but an A100 sitting in a chopped cabinet by the Hammond Store (Musik Bertram in Freiburg, Germany, are using these cabinets as well). So what you're hearing is in fact Don's Hammond plugged into two customised Leslie 147s and a Hughes & Kettner Puretone guitar amplifier.

Fuck me the Hammond C3 is still as aggressive as any modern metal guitar sound (and it;'s nearly 70 yrs old!), the moog is also soooo gutsy even compared to newer 'analogue' synths. Hammond/Moog is a combination that will never be beat - throw in a string synth, mellotron and dirty rhodes and you're in dream land.

The most interesting question would have been: What's inside the custom Leslies?
@hammondvoodoo9555
@hammondvoodoo9555 4 жыл бұрын
From a different video I can tell now it's almost certain that there are JBL 2482s midrange drivers and original Utah woofers inside the Leslies. From the outside the amps look rather original. Maybe their circuitry was changed to run KT88 power tubes instead of 6550s (which requires different power and output transformers, apart from other things) so they will yield some 80 watts each. The amps will then remain cleaner at higher volume levels than the original ones but overall they're not much louder. However, the highly efficient JBL 2482s will make the Leslies far louder, even if the original amps were still used.

"it's so simple, even I can use it...", and he really does make it look simple. One thing that strikes me about Don is his "closed-fisted" method. Whereas Jon was all fingers, Don's fingers seem very constrained. Of course, they pop out at the right time and hit the right notes, but it looks odd... almost like he's wearing boxing gloves.

Why so? I owned two Mini D's for about ten years, the first one being my first ever synth bought new in the late 70's for $1995.00 and sold in 1988 for $150.00 lol. Both were a pain at gigs due to drifting oscillators, and if the gold contact rods under the keys were not cleaned every week with alcohol and cotton swabs the keys would make random squeeling sounds at the most inopourtune momements lol. I've never owned a Voyager but have messed with em a bit at NAMM shows and studios, and imho they sound pretty close, but better in that you dont have to take that blasted bottom off every week to clean or have headphones every gig to make sure the damn thing hasn't drifted too far.
