After decades of listening to Rostropovich, Yo-Yo Ma, and a few other usual names, I wanted to find something new. And, I find this to be my personal favorite after listening to over a dozen performances by different cellists on KZfaq.

Eric, do you even play cello? I have for 50 yrs & she looked very relaxed & sounded just fine, hence it was a fine performance. You must be a Liberal & what I mean by that is: Getting an intelligent remark out of a Liberal`s mouth is like putting someone in a round room & telling them to sit in the corner. As someone once said: " Nobody ever erected a monument to a critic."

+Robert Davis I agree with your comment about the cellist and her playing. But your *absurd* generalization about "liberals" is one of the most stupid comments imaginable, period. Besides, politics has *no* relationship to one's musical knowledge. I've observed a disturbing trend among apparent conservatives in the U.S. to label as "liberal" anything they dislike or disagree with, regardless of the relevancy of such a comment. As far as politics is concerned, dismissing any idea by labeling it as "liberal" is just a very intellectually lazy way to avoid thinking and giving a rational reason for one's disagreement. I would *like* to think that anyone who has played cello for 50 years is reasonably intelligent. Please use and apply that intelligence to your discussions.

Robert Davis, I have also played cello for many years. First at the age of 17?with the LPO and then with the LSO until 1968, to then freelance as a session musician in film and tv. This performance is highly strung and most certainly not my cup of tea. The sound is very metallic. Phrasing, is clipped and without regard to the musical content. I strongly recommend, this lady listen to some of the great artists of the past, when quality of sound and exemplary phrasing was paramount. A very disappointing performance.

I thought the cellist played beautifully throughout. My problem was not with her but with the conductor. Please, I mean no offence to the person who generously shared this with us on KZfaq but the conducting (as ever with Fedoseyev) was dull and uninspiring. Watch Yo Yo Ma perform this and you'll hear something completely different: Not because of the cellist, who shows great intelligence, grace and elegance throughout, but because of the orchestral support. It is, though, a beautiful piece, to be ranked as highly as any other by our great master, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
