Barenboim conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a stellar performance of Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony in F minor for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall's 1997 season. Yes, that is the legendary Bud Herseth marshalling the CSO's incredible brass.

Bud Herseth in all his glory - loud, bright, brilliant, long, passionate, ferocious, and 76 years old. Unbelievable.

I wholeheartedly agree with that except the long part. The style was huge front to the note and natural taper with a ringing and singing sound. The hall became so dry after the remodel they did adapt and play with fatter front ends. Always so musical!

As great to watch as to listen to. Barenboim is the best, he really gets into the music completely.

If anyone's ever read The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis, whenever I think about the world of Charn, I always hear this music playing in my head. Tchaikovsky is amazing.

I think this first movement is by far the most complicated music Tchaikovsky ever composed. Chromaticism + 9/8 time signature + Tchaikovsky ...it doesn't get much better than that.

This may not be considered a masterpiece, but it's dessert for the ears. The best brass section in the world showing the world what they do - led by a man in his mid-70's who is completely in charge and knocking down the back wall. The sound is overwhelming. The whole work is among my favorites - just a fantastic showpiece for a top orchestra to display their best work and bring the audience to their feet shouting.

This is still in my top 10 pieces ever written. Yes, I’m a horn player, but I’m also a composer and arranger, so I seek out the very best music, and this is one of them.

This was the first Tchaikovsky symphony that I fell in love with -- it's the pathological melancholy of that waltz that transforms into the glorious fanfare of trombones and the soaring horns at 8:29. Transcendent! Barenboim and the CSO own this performance.

He was not playing Brandenburg 2 when that happened. He was playing the C to high C call in Also Sprach Zarathustra. Fritz Reiner kept going over the passage repeatedly, for no apparent reason. When a violinist asked him why, Reiner said he was waiting for the trumpet player to miss, at which point Mr. Herseth said, "Maestro, I'm prepared to do this all afternoon." That was that.

Herseth!!!! A New England Conservatory Grad. Half way through his 1st season, the principal trumpet took ill. Bud was moved up from 3rd. Reiner was the conductor then. He was known to try to break people. The famous 1st trumpet c to high cl ick from Strauss was played by Bud and Reiner tried to break Bud by going back over it a couple of times. He nailed it every time. After that,Reiner gave Bud final say who got in the brass section. That's why they sound the way they do.

Bud was never the third trumpet. Rodzinski hired him as first. Bud said he never played under Rodzinski in a concert. Reiner was named principal conductor in 1953.

Fritz Reiner--yes! His morbid account of the Pathetique symphony is still in a class by itself. I simply can't believe his RCA recording of the Nutcracker Suite which features the fastest March and Trepak that I have ever heard anywhere, and the Waltz of the Flowers with that colossal Chicago sound.

you can't compare Tchaikovsky to Beethoven. Two different periods of music Romantic and Classical, two different ways to look at music and composition. Actually the legacy of Romantic period is the "not-to-the-point-ness" that composition reached by not being loyal to one key as the classical period. That's why Tchaikovsky sounds so different. I Love this symphony, monumental piece of art, and Tchaikovsky surely deserves to be in the top 10 of best composers in history.

don't diss the marching band people--because of their experience playing this composition, #1. they are ahead of the rank&file population by a long shot(they've heard Tchaik., they can read music--the universal language) #2.the experience may be a prelude to a love of classical music, Tchaik., in particular#3. they may be the ticket buyers to future symphonic orchestra concerts.
