Sometimes, when I was a young girl, my grandfather would dance The Waltz with me. My feet would be on top of his, holding on with my hands, keeping proper hand form, of course. I was prob about eight, I am fourty-one now. I will always remember. This shall be the first dance of my wedding, when, or if, I do marry.

It's a shame that Walt Disney didn't produce a animated short for this classical masterpiece. It would have been exhilerating watching a parade of snowflakes gliding through a frozen, wintery lake amidst a snow covered forest as the lovely chorus mellifluously hummed in the background!

I have my own idea of a short for this particular composition: A young girl in a wheelchair befriends a female winter spirit. The two meets every winter, the spirit's magic allowing the wheelchair-bound girl to dance with her legs and with the winter spirit every time. Over the years, romance blooms between them...Until the human girl's parents finds out and chases them out in the cold, until both spirit and girl go through a magic wall, into a springtime meadow, the snow spirit turning into a spring fairy, as they both beam at each other and kiss lovingly.

This song really is like the musical embodiment of snow…like it’s just insanely perfect…the quick, fun, beautiful, bouncy music goes along with falling, swirling, blowing snow PERFECTLY. Tchaikovsky’s genius is on a whole other level. The way he can musically represent things like snow and feelings like loneliness or joy in his music…it’s insane.

elvis presley That's true, I can't really argue with that. Although I think if you're just looking to pay the rent, being in the arts isn't the best way to go, your chances of being able to make enough to live off of are very slim. There's the term 'starving artist' for a reason! :P

Tchaikovsky is the greatest of them all because he was the most versatile. He excelled in concertos, symphonies, grand opera, his magnificent Capriccio Italien, 1812 overture, choral and chamber music and of course, his specialty, ballet. The Nutcracker never fails to amaze no matter how many times it is heard. For pure entertainment he is only rivaled by Rossini.

My all time favorite piece of classical music...its delicately scored, but, as you will note, written in a minor key which gives it an air of mystery and yet still childlike-quite a feat. Just like a real snow fall which can turn bad if one does not watch it. The addition of the children's chorus confirms Tchaikovsky's orchestration genius. Makes me appreciate anyone who has to dance to this elfin music.

When I hear this and think about the tormented life of Tchaikovsky I feel touched up to tears. It seems that he the only place he found beauty and peace were within the wonderful pieces he composed.

It's possible some of them are biased against gays. Tchaikovsky put considerable effort into hiding his homosexuality from the general public and the Czar's police. And wrote in diaries that he wished he could kick a habit he had been taught to view as immoral.

This songs makes me shiver. Its like the snow is trying to decide what to do and in the mean time is going from blizzard to little bits of snow. To capture that in music would be like holding thoughts. But Tchaikovsky did it and its amazing.
