Gary Rossington passed away today 3/5/23 last surviving founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd the iconic southern rock band. Gary and his friends started the band back in their teens and took it to the top. He survived the 77 Plane crash that took the lives of 3 band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and his sister backup singer Cassie Gaines. His health isn't great today but he still gets out and plays with the Skynyrd tribute band when he can. #lynyrdskynyrd #southernrock #documentary

I couldn't have put it any better. Every Oct. 20th, I'll say a prayer, put in some Skynyrd, do a shot of Bourbon, and have a smoke in rememberance for all of the band. the ones gone, and the ones like Gary and little Brother Johnny, keeping Ronnie's dream alive.

Buddy, you hit the nail on the head. We grew up in a way that many Skynnyrd songs where about. It just so happened they where our favorite band. Ronnie's lyrics where from a wisdom way beyond his years. I don't compare which guitar player was the best, Gary just happened to be my favorite, but I loved all of them. I will say they had the best piano player at the time. It was a salt of the earth band playin' to salt of the earth ppl.

None of the Skynyrd guys seem to ever get mentioned in any GOAT lists or even “top bands of the 70s” It’s the never ending shunning of Southerners thing. Ronnie had a timeless, amazing voice. Gaines, Rossington, Collins, King all spectacular guitarists. Glad to see Gary getting some praise here. RIP 🪦

Never thought about it but you’re right they are never included in the best or most important guitarists on any list and you could make a really good argument for any of Skynyrds members to make a greatest of all time list. Ronnie was an incredible lyricist and an amazing frontman he might not have been the most technically proficient singer but his voice is iconic. Allen Collins, Rossington and Gains should be on some guitar greats lists. I wonder if it’s a southern thing them being overlooked or something. Billy Gibbons is on the lists, although he’s not from the Deep South or Old South but Texas is no doubt southern.

I'm 53yo and I grew up in N.C. listening to these guys.i play guitar. And everytime anyone asks me who your favorite guitarist. It's Gary rossington. His technique is insane it looks like he isn't even playing what you hear his picking hand is almost motionless. And the tone he got from that 59 les paul and a peavey amplifier is amazing. I play peavey amps to this day. Gary has meant more to me than he will ever know. He's the reason I play today.

The day Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crashed was one of the saddest of my life. My mom gave me the news one morning as I was waking up and getting ready to go to school. I was so busted up and crying she let me stay home that day... God bless Gary Rossington and RIP to the rest of the LS crew. Legends Live Forever!!!

I was already on my way to school when I heard the news. Still in trouble for sneaking off & going to the concert without permission & on a school night then sneaking in very late. But that day I cried all day at school then when I got home, my mom knew how devastated I was & she talked my dad into lifting my punishment of not being able to go out for the weekends ahead. But I didn't want to go out, just stay home with my Skynyrd albums & stay in my room. My friends came over & we all mourned . Even my mom did caz she loved them too.

I'm from BR too and had my ticket to the show back then; but I don't have it now. Memory fails, but I must have cashed it in for the refund, never knowing they'd reach such a high level of recognition so many years later. I do, however, have my ticket stub to the Assembly Center when they "resumed" the tour in 1992. I was a grad student at the Manship School. Also saw them at the downtown Civic Center a few years ago and at Sturgis last summer. Visited the memorial near Gillsburg two years ago as well. Very nice.

Even though i am a Bass player, i bought my first Les Paul because of Gary, I used to listen to "One More from The Road' at night in my room with the lights turned off and the headphones on. Did this many times. But from "Nuthin Fancy" album "On the Hunt" was the first lead I learnd on my Les Paul. Later in life I was privaliged to meet Gary in Person in a hotel lobby when they were getting ready to get on the bus to go do a show. I told him about the Les Paul thing and he got a laugh out of it. Then I whipped out my copy of the "First and last " album and he signed it with penmanship just like he learned in school, you could read it good. Gary is a champion in the music industry, a down to earth Badass!

They were there to PLAY! When Steve came along that type of chemistry was there with Steve and Allen. I met Ed a long time ago. Nice man! As great a player as Huey was it was not the same. He had his style and it defined the Outlaws. Different mindset. I love what he did no issue. Gary took the Kossoff thing, slowed down the vibrato and was the rock of Skynyrd. May he rest in peace!

I built him a guitar in 2017 and he called me a few times to discuss the specs. I built a guitar for bandmate Mark "Sparky" Matejka. He was a pleasure to work with. I met him back-stage at a concert in Tampa to give him the guitar and he fixed me up with hats and t-shirts and a few picks. My biggest thrills where when my phone rang, and the caller ID said Gary Rossington. I will never delete his number from my contacts and will cherish the memories of working with him for a brief moment in time.

I saw them play in their original line up 4 times, I saw Rossington-Collins play in Fort Worth in the early 80's, then came the first reunion tour concert in Dallas and the many concerts thereafter. This was a band you had to see live, their records kicked butt but the incredible energy they produced could only be felt in person.

I did 20 years touring/recording out of Nashville and one artist I was with did 2 weeks of shows with Skynyrd and I'd talk to Gary a little bit more as the tour progressed and he warmed up to the point where I felt safe in joking with him and said: "I've probably played some of your songs in cover bands more than you have and I'll never make a fraction of your money". He just smiled and said: "Sorry 'bout ya". 😄

I always loved it, the jams ,extended versions sometimes till 3 O'clock AM with certain pickers along for the ride! Down the Mtn. the back way to Old Fort N.C...and fun ! I can instantly recognize their music and that's the whole ball of wax right there. Skynrd's legacy is insured. Thanks God for letting them entertain us for a short time.

THE LAST OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS 😢 Rest easy Gary. Your guitar playing certainly inspired me and anybody else who ever held a guitar in their hands, your legacy left behind through music is absolutely monumental end the world should be ever so grateful. My love and condolences to your family and friends. It’s hard as you get older and you start watching your childhood heroes pass on- if I’m lucky enough to live to a normal old age someday all of the childhood heroes will be gone.….. I guess that’s how you know when it’s your time.

I got to see Skynyrd four months before the crash at the Cape Cod (MA) Colosseum. I've see the band several times in the years since, as well. Gary is always front and center, the band's anchor in many ways, and his playing is as steady as Gibraltar. His solo in "Call Me The Breeze" is stellar and iconic, and one of my favorite solos by any guitarist. Thanks for this tribute documentary to one of the greats. Keep rocking, Gary!

I knew Gary, and the other Gary too. Rossington was common friends with many of us in other acts.. gentle, quiet and genuine. Richrath, was a ball of energy, never ever done playing a date if a single bar, hadda single band.. he would jump in, in a heartbeat! fully immersed in playing guitar. Both parties, both answered their messages, shared the fun and we're true Les Paul endorsers and journeymen. What a body of work.. xxxxm

Thank you for this Rockumentary / Tribute, and to Gary and all the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crew and fans. I Love this band, and am saddened by Gary's passing and all of my dearly departed. I grew up listening to and loving Skynyrd's music in the 70's as a teenager. I am 60 now, and will listen / Love 💕 their music for the rest of my life. Gary was a beautiful player who was an inspiration to so many of us in the 70’s. Always loved his work on the double live album. His homage to Eric Clapton and Cream with his cover of Crossroads is as close as I’ve heard to the original live performance and energy. God bless Gary, and thanks for all the great music.

The LS version of crossroads, is about as good as it gets. Nobody, be it Clapton, or the Allman Bros., Or anyone else, can or has done a better version of this tune. Gary's guitar always sings, no matter what song it is.

@@kentbeery4941 Exactly and that was the reason behind when they did the one more from the road live album Allan did not initially want crossroads on the set list because he thought it wouldn't fit with the rest of the show being in his words a note for note copy of Cream that they started doing after seeing Cream live and left thinking it was the best live show ever. according to Tom Dowd when they went to do some small overdubs to fix a few issues that can crop up in live recordings, Allen insisted that he had made some mistakes doing the solo and could do better and then preceded to do twenty odd takes, the story ended up with Tom laughing about how after all Allen's efforts the perfectly fine original live take remained unconquered and finished up on the album. My mistake I should have said the last bit was about the Free Bird solo

Gary Rossington recently added his signature slide guitar parts on the Artimus Pyle Band's recording of Freebird on APB's upcoming album due out in the fall of this year. Apparently Dolly Parton is singing Freebird with Gary Rossington on slide guitar and Artimus Pyle on drums. The rest of the songs on this upcoming tribute album to Ronnie Van Zant will be sung by a variety of well known singers with Artimus Pyle on drums, Scott Raines on guitar, Jerry Lyda on guitar, Dave Fowler on bass and Brad Durden on keys. APB does an incredible job playing this Skynyrd music with accuracy and intensity and it's really awesome to hear that Gary will be featured on this album!!

Ed had already left the band before the plane crash. It was Steve who took his place as the third guitarist. It’s really strange to think what might have happened if Ed hadn’t left - he might have perished instead of Steve. What’s even more strange is the fact that Ed and Steve shared the same birthday (same day, same year). If you look at the cover of Pronounced, there’s a bolt of lightning that occurred just as the picture was taken, and it appears to run right into Ed. On the original Street Survivors cover, it’s Steve who appears to be the most engulfed by the flames. You can’t make this kind of stuff up. While I don’t believe that it has any actual significance, it certainly makes for a weird bit of trivia.
