A recording from The Check Up, October 2022 talks about the symptoms and how to get diagnosed for coeliac disease, as well as the risks of cross-contamination from gluten and the importance of living coeliac safe for life. Includes an interview with Coeliac NZ member Sarah Albom.
Coeliac disease is a permanent intestinal reaction to dietary gluten (the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley, and avenin in oats). With coeliac disease, the cells lining the small bowel (intestine) become damaged and inflamed. This causes flattening of the tiny, finger-like projections, called villi, which line the inside of the bowel.
A simple blood test is available to test for coeliac disease. People with coeliac disease who eat gluten have a higher than normal level of certain antibodies in their blood. These antibodies are produced by the immune system because it views gluten as a threat.
Talk to your doctor. if you are concerned your symptoms are caused by gluten and get tested.
