Granted, the same could be said about Napoleon and his emporer's ambition sized war crimes (regarding playing as historical villains). ^^;

A case to be made for it perhaps, but I don't put Napoleon in the same league as Hitler or the Confederacy. As far as his "ambition sized war crimes" it's important to remember that his enemies declared war on him twice as much as he declared war on them.. Still, your point is taken.

So uhhhhh..... I won't get into the slavery conversation....but have you played Fire and Stone Siege of Vienna 1683. What an amazing game and a great system I have never experienced before. I really like that it's a battle of attrition. I feel like you don't see that enough with games....unless it's WWI themed

I can’t believe these comments from people. When you play cowboys and Indians people have to play the Indians too. So I don’t have a problem playing either side. That said the war to me had three big reasons as to why it was fought. Number one being slavery. The whole modern day confederate apologists claim it was about states rights. Okay well what rights were those they were willing to die for? Oh that’s right to own slaves. Number two I think it has a lot to do with Abe Lincoln not shown in most ballots in southern states. And number 3 the inevitable end of agricultural society and industrial society saying hey this is the America we want and this is what it’s going to be. Just my two cents

Well said Cody. I love your channel. we should always be asking why? And if we can’t do better in design and thinking about military history.

Wait a minute, the Battle of Gettysburg was from July 1st to July 3rd? Why didn't they include the 3rd? I don't quite remember how the movie ended - that whole thing with Pickett worked out pretty well, I imagine. Seemed like a solid plan.

So, it's a legacy game that can be played only once, as you ruin it by writing in the book? I dunno...
@TheDiscriminatingGamer
@TheDiscriminatingGamer Жыл бұрын
Ha! No, it's not a 'legacy' game, as it is not a story that builds. There are a limited number of pages you can play, but I tend to write lightly with pencil, so I can erase and play again if I want to.

I'm a big fan of yours, Cody. Been following you for years and enjoy everything you put out. I expected a man of your education and background to have a more nuanced view of both sides of this conflict. Not looking for a debate, just a bit surprised.
@TheDiscriminatingGamer
@TheDiscriminatingGamer Жыл бұрын
Not a lot of time to discuss the nuance in a game review, I'm afraid. Certainly there is more to it, but frankly, the Civil War would not have happened without the institution of slavery.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer What Cody said, true dat. Those who fought for the North ultimately fought to end slavery, not to defend it. If you ask me, Cody is on point with his comments.
@OnesUponaGame
@OnesUponaGame Жыл бұрын
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer But that of course was NOT the primary reason for the conflict. Slavery was a symptom not the cause. Probably would have been best to not editorialize in the review... just point out you only play the South and leave it at that. Include you wish you could play both sides (understandable)... but was a bit disappointed this go round that you took it a little too far. At best you could say that in the ACW there were no "good guys" same as the Eastern Front in WW2. The south had its issues, but the north was not the noble defender false history has made them out to be either.
@user-hk5fo1nm9h
@user-hk5fo1nm9h Жыл бұрын
@@OnesUponaGame The south’s economy revolved almost entirely around slavery. It was more unequal than Ancient Rome, and the aristocrats of the south got all their money from slavery and all of their political opposition to the north, from tariffs to taxes, was driven entirely by their reliance on slavery. It made them dependent on British imports and crowded out industrial development. There is no civil war without slavery. The north doesn’t have to be perfect for the south to be the bad side. Political centralization is debatable as a moral bad, but the daily torture, beating, sexual assault, child kidnapping, and murder that was at the very core of everyday slavery, that’s not debatable. A quarter of southern households held slaves, and they had all the political and economic power, they were the ones who chose to secede, they were the ones who made the south cause, and they were the ones who created the reclamationist south that revived white supremacy. You seem to be duped by revisionist lies that southerns historians actively and consciously constructed for decades after the war to make sure they would claw back control in the end.

The Greeks practiced slavery and invented democracy. Are you going to refuse to play as the Greeks? The Egyptians, Romans, Arabs, and even African kingdoms practiced slavery, so will you never play as these nations and empires in a wargame? Napoleon reinstated slavery: do you never play Napoleonic wargames? Yet you mention Waterloo, don't you?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer
@TheDiscriminatingGamer Жыл бұрын
Did you watch the video? I said that I would never say I wouldn't play the Confederacy. As to the history lesson, yes, I am aware of all the points you made. However, don't you think there is something uniquely ominous about the slavery practiced by the Confederacy, and the fact that they loved it so much they were willing to tear the country apart rather than give it up? Have you read Andrew Stephens' Cornerstone Speech? Can we not play historical games like this and still acknowledge the troubled history?
