IP's cost a lot of money now. FFG knew they could not make enough money on certain contracts and declined to continue them. There is also the problem of a large catalog. Games like LotR and the Star Wars lcg's, Galactica and Netrunner had a huge amount of content and was going to cost a lot of money to maintain with constant reprints on top of the IP cost. They became too big to continue.

I purchased Tide of Iron a few years ago because of your recommendation! I found someone local that was selling everything ever printed for it for 200 bucks. I’ve only played it twice though 😢. Both people that tried it didn’t love it, but I still am yet to play it with my wife so I am hoping she likes it. My top Grail game that I own has to be Descent: Journeys in the Dark 1st edition with every expansion (excluding the lieutenant minis). I’ve also painted all but around 15 minis. It was the game I learned how to paint minis on and you can tell over the 100+ I painted, the progress I made as a painter. Gotta finish those some time this summer. Thanks for the enjoyable watch as always!

Totally with you on Tide of Iron. What a disappointment 1A didn't support it longer. Was a bit surprised to see CoH though, especially because they once again missed out on a larger scale battle and having the commanders be historical leaders rather than boring generics with a lot of abilities that would never get touched (didn't find a single commander interesting during either KS)... But god those minis were cool.

Yeah, but CoH is still a really fun game, IMHO. Tide of Iron is great too.

Great list, and it's surprising how many FFG games qualified for it! I hadn't thought of _Battlestar_ _Galactica_ as being a grail game, but you're right: I just looked it up, and my BSG game + expansions are selling for $$$, wow. Anyway, I'll contribute: Two grail games that it took me a while to get my hands on and that were well worth the wait, are _Gunslinger_ and _Magic_ _Realm_ (both by the same designer, Richard Hamblen). They're great "convention" games in that they can be played by lots of folks (especially Gunslinger), so if you go to cons it's worth keeping an eye out for someone hosting one of them. Oh yeah, one more: _Jyhad_ is a card game designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast back in 1994. Obviously it didn't take off to the same degree that Magic: The Gathering did, but it's really good. You don't need to own thousands of cards to make it fun and challenging, and it really takes advantage of White Wolf's "World of Darkness" setting and lore.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer oh shoot sorry Cody I didn’t specify, I was asking Antoyal. Thanks for responding though!
@antoyal3 ай бұрын
@@-RTC- I know I'm supposed to say something like, "Nahh, the complexity is overrated--it's actually easy to learn!" But yeah, I found it to be pretty tough. From what I've read, the game was intended to be more of a series, but shortly before production started Avalon Hill told the designer to fit whatever he could into just the first edition and not count on any follow-ups. This meant that some of the advanced rules and characters got included, which is great, but there just wasn't enough time to rewrite the rulebook properly. The game has a reputation as one that is *very* difficult to learn just by reading the rules. It is quite easy to learn if you have someone there with you to teach it though, which is one reason that it is such a great convention game. All that being said, there is a thriving community of enthusiastic Magic Realm players who have done a *fantastic* job of reorganizing the rules, creating player aids, posting play-throughs and session reports, and even writing a great Java-based version of the game (it's called RealmSpeak). Check out "The Magic Realm Tutorial Project" over in the Magic Realm forums at boardgamegeek.com -- there's a lot to read, but you *will* learn what all the fuss is about. For me, Magic Realm is a fun game but not one of my *most* fun games. Complex but not one of my *most* complex games. And so on for other descriptors such as difficulty and game length. It has a great decision space, and a really well developed risk-reward loop. Some of the mechanics in the game are exquisite, and I find it hard to believe that they haven't been adopted by other games. On the other hand, I find the game to be a bit dry. It's always fun and well worth it the time when I play it, but like with some other games like Mage Knight I have to sort of psyche myself up to breaking out the box, reviewing the rules, and playing it. Speaking of Mage Knight, while that game is often compared to Magic Realm, honestly I can't think of any game that really conveys the Magic Realm experience. It's a sandbox game, with each player prioritizing their objectives at the beginning and then trying their best to meet those objectives over the course of a game month. It uses programmed actions for each day, which is of course challenging. The characters are IMHO not remotely "balanced," in the modern game design sense, and the differences between them can be huge or subtle. But the characters are rich and distinctive. The chit-based system for handling movement, combat, injuries, and exhaustion is amazing--one of those game mechanics that I'm surprised hasn't been used by other designers. It's from an era of fantasy gaming that predates much of what has become received wisdom about character types, how magic works, and so forth. For example, the Dwarf character isn't a tanky powerhouse with shoulders as wide as he is tall. He's a small guy who doesn't move as fast as most of the other characters, but he is hardy and he *really* knows his way around caves (which are generally dangerous or risky areas for most other characters). I should say, by the way, that a game called _Dragons_ _Down_ had a successful crowdfunding campaign recently, so it will be seeing publication. It's sort of a streamlined spiritual successor / homage to Magic Realm, designed by someone who clearly adores Magic Realm. I backed Dragons Down and I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on it!

Classic Car Wars pocketbox( I'm not fond of the new oversized Car Wars 6th edition prefer the classic 1980s ones) 4 Snapshot by GDW (I'm sure there are now better starship boarding boardgames.
