Like you, not normally one for guided tours, but that I would have also done. Could haven listened to his stories all day.... in a bit of a way he kind of looked like he could have been related to George Lindsay.... (there was just a hint of Goober in his face). That theatre reminds me of lot of the Lyric back home in Ark. I was one of the ones that worked to help restore it for our theatre group to use.... now it is the same... the screen rolls down for movies, and the stage is used for plays, musicals, concerts ect... kept the old candy counter at the concession stand, and redid the neon... these things need to be SAVED before they vanish! I loved this vlog.... Andy's show was just.... good, clean fun, always with a gentle lesson in morality. THANK YOU, ADAM!!!

My late brother was a big Andy Griffith fan and I'm so glad I got him and our mom up to Mount Mayberry. I've got pictures of him sitting at Andy's desk, and him in the jail cell. We also did the squad car tour with an old black gentleman who grew up with Andy. He was full of great information and it was a very memorable day.

Quite literally the Greatest Show of all time to be on T.V. I was watching a political panel discussion where they all disagreed on everything. But when someone mentioned Andy Griffith they all smiled and instantly became nice to each other and they all sgreed on this topic. Amazing.

I'm an Aussie & back when I was a kid the Andy Griffith show was a MUST watch for the whole family! So this TV series would have had world wide acclaim I would think. I recently watched "A face in the Crowd" (It's here on Utube) and it shows just how great a serious actor Andy Griffith was, great movie. That Statue of Andy & Opie was cool!

It's so cool to see this. I'm 20 and I actually didn't grow up watching (the re-runs of) this show, although I did grow up watching (the re-runs of) a lot of other older shows. But I work as an Activities Assistant at a rehab center for older folks, and we keep the TV on in the activity room on the TV Land channel and so it always has the older shows playing such as MASH, Golden Girls, Rosanne, and newer shows but that have already ended like Reba and Everybody Loves Raymond. Well one of the older shows that airs is 'The Andy Griffith Show', and since I started working at this place and have watched this show every weekend for the past 4 months, I've gotta say that I've become a fan of the show, so it was really cool that this video came up in my recommend videos. I also really love history, so I enjoy your channel and JustinScarred's channel a lot because you guys visit places and give a full history lesson of the place you're visiting, which is awesome! Thanks again for another very informative and entertaining video Adam!

Great video, Adam. I lived in Mount Airy for about 8 years back in the '70s. It wasn't as commercialized then.. just a sleepy town with a proud heritage. I also used to get my hair cut at "Mount Airy Barber Shop," the original name before it became "Floyd's." Later, I had my hair cut by one of the daughters of Emmett Forrest, a longtime friend of Andy's who was also the source for "Emmett's Fix It Shop." Emmett was very instrumental in setting up many of the AG museums. The reference to the use of granite in local construction stems from nearby Mount Airy Granite Quarry, which (unbeknownst to most people) is the world's largest open-faced granite quarry. The granite has been used for everything from the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. to the Arlington Memorial Bridge to the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kitty Hawk, NC. Everyone needs to visit "Mayberry" and have an RC and Moonpie at least once before they die. Gotta go now. I have this urge to go fishin'.

Ol' Don's from my (og) neck of the woods. After all these yrs, they just got around to erecting a memorial statue in his honor on High St. last summer. I went to high school (& dancing school) w/his niece. Used to see his poor homeless rummy brother downtown. Always loved Andy, & freaky Floyd the Barber. One of my fave episodes is when Aunt Bee overdoes the health tonic & cuts loose on the piano. Show's still playing on one of our retro channels even today - indeed a classic. Cool u could document the town it was based upon. Roll on, Large Marge! Share that Americana!

You outdid yourself today Adam. Very good video. When I first started in law enforcement in 1974 our police dept. In Monroe, Louisiana had some of the older vehicles left. At times I drove a 69 Ford patrol car with a "gumball" light on top. I believe they kept one and restored it for parades. Brings back memories.

I cannot begin to describe how happy I am that you are exploring my beloved state! I've never actually been to Mt Airy and I've only been to Pilot Mountain once, so your videos made me want to visit those places. If you head east and you want an oddball place to go--check out the aloha safari zoo. It's a rescue zoo on a guy's farm so it's very old fashioned. You can buy stale bread and popcorn and feed almost all of their animals. It's in the middle of nowhere south of Raleigh. If you're near Asheboro (west of Raleigh), the NC zoo is the largest walk-through zoo in the world. It's not nearly as hands-on as Aloha Safari but it's much bigger. If you go west, there are a million things to do and see in the Asheville area, from the Biltmore House and the Grove Park Inn to the NC Arboretum and the WNC farmers market (it is drive-through). I hope you make it out to the outer banks. The southern ferry ride over to Ocracoke has to be scheduled in advance so if that's in your plans make sure to get a slot. It's a beautiful ride that's over an hour. I hope you stay for a few days! There is so much to do and see here, and you're likely to find little things that I've never seen before along the way.
