So amazing to be able to attend the Merrie Monarch 2014 ... but also to be here to witness and share such an amazing performance by the Reigning Champions TE WAKA HUIA ... so nice catching up with old friends in the group and meeting new Whanau =)
ENJOY!
I initially taped this to give to the group and then realised that it needed to be shared with the world and for all the Whanau who couldn't be here =)

Mean az performance. As a Maori who lives on the Big Island of Hawaii this brought much pride in my culture. They look as though they are having heaps fun up there on Te Papa tuwaewae which is what matters most. The Audience loved them. Awesome Job Te Waka Huia. Keep repping on kuzzies. Don't pay no attention to the other crabs in the bucket trying to pull you guys back in the bucket. You guys don't have anything to prove to these wannabe Matatini Judges online here. Haere tonu Waka Huia!

I love this group so happy to hear and see Annette Wehi sing. They came to China in 2007 to open my company along with my whanau and former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley. Love their music made me cry good memories of them love their songs they compose. They are so supportive of Maori businesses their dance and songs they performed here they did for me in China, and when they all left my heart died a thousand times, its been over 7 years now. Arohanui and kia kaha my loved ones. Thank you for sharing.

MEAN!!! Maoris are always welcome to Hawai'i \m/ Ran into a few Maori workers at the Heathrow airport in England & right away they asked me if I was Polynesian & I said yeah Hawaiian/Tahitian. Then they put their fist up & said "Ehhh my Polynesian brudah!". I live in Scandinavia's Denmark, so I was so happy to see Polynesian people. No matter our differences in Polynesia we will always have a Spiritual connection.

All of Polynesia are ONE. We all share the same ancestry. Though exactly WHERE these ancestors are from is possibly lost to history BUT their mana is strong between us whether we like it or not. There are theories that we may all be from the Haida tribe of the Inuit in ‘Alaska’. Others believe we may be from ancient Mayan cultures or others in South America. Like I said... the similarities among our people in different parts of the Pacific Ocean is undeniably linked so we are all brothers and sisters with only an ocean between us.

They were just fantastic to watch! I was on the ground floor that night and they brought the house down. Met one of the performers in the lua and she was so nice and lovely. It was such an honour to watch them. Glad this is here to help keep the moment even more alive in my memory and heart.

@SalznPfeffer658

Wiri describes the action of the hands trembling/shaking the tendril that directly connects the world of the living with the spirit world. It is an attempt to awaken our ancestors from their world to see us in ours, so that they may see how we honour and appreciate the lessons they left behind for us & the life they gave us and future generations. It is both a celebration and showing gratitude for sharing the life force that connects all humans past, present & future.

Waka Huia......kua tiini ke te roopu nei. Rereke te ahuatanga. Untidy, not insinc, especially at a world stage level of the Hawaiian standard equivalent to Matatini. E hia te roa kua tautoko au i a koutou. Many years since a child have I followed and have watched. Nan has gone and so does part of what she instilled in the roopu is gradually changing. The sound is different, its not the same. Originality is somewhat. E te koka, e te tuakana, e te whaea ko koe ra e Vicky, hoki mai. Kei hea koe?

This video was posted to celebrate culture … not bring it down … You are welcome to let them know personally how they can fix their performances … but no need for it here as it won't help them any on this forum as this video was created for people to enjoy not criticise =) They are performing in Hawaii as a way to share their culture with people who appreciate it … but also don't fully understand it … so it was more of an educational and entertaining performance … fully appreciated by all of the Hawaiians that were there =)

Dee Kay aww gosh that doesnt sound like sour grapes at all *insert eye roll* The sound may be different from what you remember but it is still beautiful. I think they did NZ and Maori proud. I never understand the need to put others down in our culture....if you dont like it, click the little x in the top corner.

+Dee Kay this is just a fun concert to share culture though. It's not a hardcore competition like Matatini. And this is an hour-long format, not a 25-minute bracket.
