It's Friday, so it's time for this week's 'Tea Reads' episode! In this video, I'm joined by my Mum (Donna), and we share our regular Friday routine of a teatime chat about books over tea and a sweet treat. In our 'Tea Reads' episodes, we'll be sharing great short reads that can be enjoyed in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea. In today's episode, we bake Mary Berry's shortbread and read aloud a poem and short essay on owls (which we've been hearing a lot at night lately!).

Miranda and Donna I just love watching you both and how much you enjoy each other. I grew up in East Finchley London aaand came to California when I was 13 I also grew up on Enid Blyton, Sunny Stories I came upon your charming videos when I was looking for good books to read. Seeing you both is an extra treat since I loved to cook with my mother when she was alive. It is such a special thing to have a mother like ours. I watched last week and made Delia Smith's fruit scones.and they were delicious. I like to make a Victoria Sponge and when I miss my mom I make a batch of fairy carkes. Your video is something to look forward to each week.

I’m watching your videos with my daughter and we are both in love with their ambience and the comfortable manner in which they are presented. My daughter is 17 and these videos are helping her relax whilst she is dealing with her A levels being up in the air because of the current situation. Thank you.

Such a lovely video from you both. We have a barn owl which flies over our house most evenings at dusk. It always feels special to witness it. I remember a YA novel about a barn owl I read some years ago, Old Hushwing, I wish I had kept it.

I love this new format for the tea reads. I’m with your mum as I always buy a special cake for my boys birthdays. I love baking but there are some fantastic cakes to buy. Love it.

Lovely video, I do feel inspired to make shortbread now and as I am currently writing my food shopping list I might sneak the ingredients on to it. I’m lucky enough to live in a village (and one without street lights) so we often hear owls and I have seen quite a few, especially if I have been to a yoga class in a nearby village and am driving home in the dark.

I try to wait until I'm home from work so that I can join in with a calm cup of tea, but anticipation always gets the best of me. You're paired "ummm" as you both take that first bite is adorable. These cozy tea reads are so much fun--thank you!

I am loving your sharing of recipes and books. We are Anglophiles and I have only just discovered your channel. Love the coupling of recipes (particularly Mary Berry's and your Friday sharing!) I wonder if you are familiar with Jane Yolen's Owl Moon. Image rich and poetic. A marvelous picture book. I used it when I was teaching but have given my grandchildren copies!

I collect owl earrings! 🙂 Love them! But they are rarely seen unfortunately... you two are the best duo! 😉 I miss my mom everytime I watch you. She was a great cook and made a different desert almost everyday. Not good for the waist but I loved that! 😊 Have a great weekend!

Hi Miranda and Donna, I loved your baking session very much. It made my mouth water! Luckily I had a doughnut and a cup of tea in front of me. I definitely want to try this shortbread recipe and I would like to order Mary Berry‘s latest cookbook ( it would be my first). Such charming owl poetry and excerpts. I‘ve never seen an owl, but then I don‘t dare to go into the woods at night :). Please don‘t stop these gorgeous Tea Reads videos, I miss England so much and it feels like being there with you. 🍪☕️💕

Miranda...thanks to you and your dear Mum, Friday's 'Tea Reads' has quickly turned into my favorite Saturday morning ritual. Orange shortbread made fancy by drizzling with melted dark or milk chocolate is one of my favorite Christmas time recipes to gift to friends and family. I love the idea of "extra crunch" so I will try adding some semolina in my next shortbread batch. Lastly, the owl readings were lovely, as are the books that you featured...my favourite excerpt being the Tennyson poem. Wishing you both a warm and cosy weekend xo

Lovely tea reads - thank you, Miranda and Donna! It's so nice to be able to look forward to these every Friday afternoon. I too love Tennyson. Your readings have inspired me to go back to the poetry book I treasured as a teen. It's an anthology with a generous serving of Tennyson among many other great poets. One of my fave owl poems is Edward Lear's The Owl and the Pussy Cat. I know it's intended for children but I have not outgrown it yet! Speaking of Owl mugs, we have a gorgeous one from Emma Bridgewater designed by her husband Matthew Rice. I saw you have the Robin mug - so lovely, with the bright crimson red. xx

What a treat! These Tea Reads have a been a highlight of both my Fridays. I watched this with tea and a slice of chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream. Your excerpts reminded me that I saw an owl in the forest about a year ago. It was huge and magical, even a little scary as it twisted its head around to eye me!

Particularly apt because I was rudely awoken by our dog barking at a squirrel through the window at 5.30 this morning but when I went and let her out for a few mins I heard two owls calling to each other! These are definitely my favourite videos at present! So lovely. There's a very vocal pair of tawny owls outside my house at night. I adore their calls. It's such a soothing, beautiful sound. I have Spell Songs and The Secret Life of the Owl right here, funnily enough! I've been writing a little about owls, what they mean to me, and trying to capture how their calls make me feel 🦉

Owls are such special creatures. Occasionally I see them, as we are also in the countryside. Mostly I hear them though. I am wondering when I will have the chance to make the shortbread. Tomorrow perhaps, after all, it is the weekend. Thank you for easing me into it in such a delightful way.

Hello Donna and Miranda, another enjoyable teatime treat thank you both. Yes we do have owls and they are very special to me because my late brother took me on a woodland walk one dusky evening and showed me a nest of fluffy grey owlets in a hollow of a tree, so magical and it has stayed with me forever. I like to make owl calls by blowing into my cupped hands and they call back! Now shortbread! One of my absolute favourites and one I am always hunting out recipes for, my current recipe of choice is Jane Brocket's "Mrs Glump's melt-in-the-mouth" recipe (from Enid Blyton's The Rhubadub Mysteries and Snubby gives it his approval). It is in Jane's "Cherry Cake and Ginger Beer" book of recipes for treats mentioned in children's literature. Now I will have to see if Mary Berry's recipe is going to nudge this one aside and become a favourite. Enjoy your tea and many thanks for another lovely video, Teresa 🍂🍪📚🦉☕️💛🧡🤎🍂

Lovely video! I technically live in London, but we have owls here every night and deer and hawks. But we are on the outskirts, so the best of both worlds.
