59:22 This is such an important tip! I just worked on a Sony CDP-291 earlier this week and this was the problem. As you said, lots of AV components have that resistor chain control setup so once the tact switches have a little bit of oxidation on them the deck just goes nuts (especially Sony's from my experience). I see many forum posts of people talking about their Sony decks "losing their minds" and they try to replace unique ICs and entire boards, when it is just some $.02 tact switches creating erroneous resistive values in the chain since they don't perfectly close their circuit. With the control board removed from the front fascia, I put a little bit DeoxIT D100L-25C (needle dripper) in each switch and pressed each switch quickly for a bit. After that, it behaved much more predictively. The more it gets used, the better it will work! Thanks again for such a wonderfully informative video documenting this process so us younger people can keep these aging electronics functioning!

The problem with many of the belts coming from China/Indonesia/Thailand/etc is twofold: thickness inconsistency and what we used to call "drunken slitting." Flat and square belts like these are produced as tubes/hose and then sliced to the desired size. If the cutting is not very carefully done the resulting belt may have a "weave" to it like a tire on a bent wheel. Better belts may actually go through an extra step where the belt is actually machined to make it uniform. This is getting hard to find today with everything being sourced outside of Japan. I got good belts from Turkey way back but don't know if that still applies.

Hello, nice job once again. These TEAC and Tascam decks had a quite nice reputation then and also interesting advanced design. I remember they were not specially more expensive than quality equivalent, but they were not sold everywhere. I had 2 in the 1980's, first one with Dolby C, second with DBX, but this last system was really exclusive, as a non equipped playback deck would suffer from excessive compression effects. If you had to record for a simple walkman, this was useless. I also later used Dolby S on high end Pioneer, TEAC or Sony decks, but with some limited advantages compared to a simple Dolby C. Some of the most advanced decks from Studer / REVOX or Nakamichi never had S nor DBX noise reduction, but took advantages of elaborated metal tapes like TDK MAR, Sony UX pro and less known specialists That's MRX and Suono. When it comes to ceramic guides...

I live in the UK and the Crazy Crazy scheme works in full swing here. I think the that the flutter we can hear is just azimuth misalignment of the head. Sounds like the test tone is phasing in and out between the channels. When I listened to the reply of the test recordings it sounded great. I believe whoever changed the belt previously must have done some "servicing" on the unit.

I watched on a smartphone and it sounded like a ceiling fan was on low speed and caused different acoustics in the room I've had that experience with tones and ceiling fans on low before. I couldn't see the belt waving (phone screen just too small) if Dave says it was a cheap Chino belt as the cause I definitely don't doubt it. 😄👍👌.

We had Krazy Krazy here too. I never bought anything there, but I learned a very important life lesson with Visions Electronics in the mid 90's. Saved up my money for a CD boombox, waited in line at 6am in the cold winter for a Sony model they had advertised for $129. We were the 2nd group into the store - no Sony in stock (shock!). The salesperson and my dad convinced me that a $99 (regular price) RCA model was just as good. It wasn't.

Visions are no better. Krazy krazy would have one unit on the shelf and one in a box. I spent 3 hours in there to wrangle out a 333.33 VHS hifi machine. GE branded Panasonic 2 head hifi. Get this it was so stripped down 2 heads instead of 4 as all the other hifi machines had, 14 position varactor tuner and no stereo tuner just mono. I didn't care i was just using it as a duplicator machine and i ran that machine doing dubs until i wore the thing out. I chucked it years ago. Wish I kept it. Would have made a great repair video. KK was in the news. Them and future shop were always grabbing media coverage for deceptive business practices. Future shop was bought out by best buy.

@@12voltvids There were (and still are to an extent) so many shady electronics and computer stores. One computer store here used to buy insurance damaged computers and re-sell them (with a sticker to prevent you from opening without voiding your warranty). Computers that had been in literal fires, with smoke damage inside. A 2-head Hi-Fi VCR would make a very cool video! Not a very common machine, I'm still on the lookout for one.

Belts on eBay are crap. I have two Teac CX-400 decks, one of which is now a parts donor since the flywheel has become wobbly on the capstan shaft somehow, figure it must have been dropped. Supposed to be one flat drive belt and two round belts of slightly different lengths. The eBay belts had both round belts same length and the drive belt is too tight and tracks off center. Has a speed flutter problem because of that. Last time I ordered from Teac America in Montebello, CA was in 2002, ordered a service manual, idler wheel, and two belts for my Teac PC-10 direct drive portable field recorder. Didn't think they would still have belts 18 years later for this old stuff. I have a Teac A-420 deck in my storage room hoping to find a supply spool spring, and the piece that goes on the hex shaped drive mechanisim that rewinds the tape spool, and the little washer and cap. The soldering and general workmanship varies quite a bit in the Teac units however, manufacturing processes not as consistent as the Japanese built stuff. Engineering however is outstanding. Teac made all of the magnetic heads for NASA and the space program.

Smashing repair dave :-D, sounds spot on now, just the way it should. From the start it really did sound unhappy, like a drunk whistling bird trying not to fall off a branch :-D. The second you took the cover off i liked the quality, but a mibushi capstan motor does not seem too special. Love the metal deck, plastic is usefull but metal is better and it can be earthed to shield the tape heads and cables. My mates Tensai (akai) deck is all metal, the flywheel is a solid heavy metal for best energy storage/smoothing. Odd how the power bar behaved.

If you wanted a full metal mechanism base in a cassette deck from SOme compaNY, you had to go for the Expensive Shit. And if you did, you'd end up with good quality. BUT: this company often shot themselves in the foot by letting misaligned mechanisms get out into the consumer base. Misaligned azimuths and even misaligned head heights were often responsible for less-than-stellar performance of factory-new units. A buddy of mine had a HiFi shop back in the day and whenever someone bought a tape deck (and later, DAT deck) from said company (and others like Pio), he'd offer the customer to open it up first (he was a certified repairman) for initial alignment. He always said that manufacturers often threw away 15-20% of a device's possible performance just through bad QC.

@@12voltvids with Naks, it was especially sad. Given their price tags, one could have definitely expected a decent mechanical factory alignment. It's just no fun when a 3000$ unit mangles up tapes because the tape is being dragged along a tape guide and crumpled on the pinch roller. But to be fair: it wasn't just Sony, it was also Pioneer, Onkyo and others.

I'd say 50-50% capstan transport design and belt quality affect the wow. There are mechanisms that really don't care what belt you put on as long as they spin with even minimal tension on one side such as early Technics RS-M series like M250 and M230 and perhaps this TEAC and mechanisms that you can read the quality of the belt directly from your digital oscilloscope plot, those are a nightmare with practically any belt.

Crazy Crazy sounds like a company we had in the UK called "Colorvision". They were a very old and respected rental/sales company based in Liverpool (operated nationwide) but hit hard times in the 1990s. They started advertising in the local papers some ridiculously cheap deals such as TV/VCR/stereo deals for not much more than the cost of a TV etc. All cheap off-brand stuff, but still some great deals. Problem was they never had them in stock. They claimed they could get them for you but would tell customers there'd be a three month waiting list - this was generally after they'd been pre-approved for credit etc - and offered alternative deals (more expensive of course). My father (a police inspector) managed to get a deal delivered inside a month, at the advertised price, by threatening to investigate them. Nothing like a bit of blackmail to get the cogs greased! They didn't last long afterwards and closed for good a couple of years later. The actual products were OK as I recall. A 21“ TV (which appeared to be a Sanyo rebadge), a 14" portable (British built), a VCR (Orion) and a nasty Sentra-badged midi CD system, with a small stereo radio cassette, for around £300. The VCR and TV both retailed for about £250 at the time.

These guys would have stock. 1 to show and 1 to go. Every day. They mak have had 50 in the back, but only 1 went out front and they would run the ads "2 or 3 per store" in the ad and then when you walked in they were always sold out, but they had another 2 the next day.

@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
If you're asking me for an opinion on what type of cassette deck to buy, I would say don't buy a cassette deck in 2022! If you must buy one find the cheapest one that you can find because they're all old and spending a lot of money on one does not guarantee it's going to last any length of time. You have rubber parts that are going to be worn out rubber idler tires clutches belts pinch rollers all kinds of parts that you cannot replace so spending a lot of money on something ancient like this is in many cases just throwing your money away. I don't want to sound negative about tape but I'm just being real. These machines now are 40 years old and they weren't designed to last 40 years in fact most of them had a life expectancy when they were manufactured of three to five years. First thing stay off eBay unless you want to get ripped off. Check out your Facebook marketplace or your local thrift store. people get an idea when they look on eBay that these vintage tape decks are worth a small fortune, unfortunately eBay has been a cesspool for money laundering for the last number of years we're vintage stereo equipment has been selling for Ludacris amounts of money, but they really weren't being sold it was just criminals advertising and selling non-existent product to their associates so that their dirty money could change hands like legitimate sale and become clean money. Unfortunately this practice gave other people ideas and convinced buyers and sellers that this is what this equipment was worth and then real equipment started listing and going for huge amounts due to this artificial influence. They're not worth what people on eBay think. Unfortunately even the thrift stores are getting in on this because a year ago I was seeing some really nice old vintage tape decks selling for 15 to $20 and now the thrift stores are asking $100. Still a lot cheaper than the three to four hundred dollars that some people think that these old relics are worth on ebay.

It was Krazy Krazy with a K and we had other names for them like Nutzy Nutzy. They were out west here too, and they were real bastards. Really screwed up the market and margins for the other dealers. They would get into price wars with A&B sound, and were liekly one of the reasons that A&B went under. A&B's policy was they would beat anyone elses price, and KRAZY would then beat their price by 20% of the difference even if it meant selling something at a loss, just to get the deal. All the shops hated them, because of their deceptive business practices. The guy I worked for was very blunt when he warned all of us, that if he ever found out that we have supported that store that we would be looking for another job. So I went there and kept my mouth shut. I only ever bought 2 things there. My Teac v850 like the one in this video and a cheap 2 head GE hifi VCR that I had to pry out of the shop. I took it as a challenge to get it out of there, and the salesman followed me out to my car trying to convince me to trade it back for a much more expensive model. After Krazy closed Visions opened. They are still there,and much of the Krazy staff ended up with Visions. I used to go in there to kick tires. No intent to buy anything just see what was new. Haven't been there is over a year or for that matter any other electronics shop. Only to best buy once to buy a new camera for the channel, and I like the old one better.
