This video goes over how to teach your dog to be comfortable putting on and taking off and wearing a cone or what some call an e-collar (short for Elizabethan collar). I also go over different types of cones at the beginning of the video as well as give tips on when your dog has to wear a cone. Some dogs and puppies take to wearing a cone with very little training while others take more training to teach them to be confident wearing the cone.
Thanks for watching! Please give a thumbs up, comment and subscribe! It means a lot to me :)

Incredibly thorough and will help so many people and their dogs! My puppy loved our training games with his e-cone collar. I introduced it to him about a month before his neuter and by the time his surgery came he was prepped and ready, and actually had fun putting the different e-cone collars on - we did the standard plastic, a soft Comfy Cone and a donut type simply for the sake of learning and comfort. It was so much fun!

Thank You for offering this cone training. I've had other puppies in my life. However, this little one that I have now is an absolute 'spitfire' and absolutely loves to get her way! So I have have been very concerned because she sleeps in a Soft Kennel at night. This has been very helpful!

If everyone could watch this before having their dog spayed, neutered or go under any other surgical procedure. Your explanations are always clear and simple. Thank you so much for all those super useful videos. :) Emily, when you have a few seconds, I sent you a message via your Dogmantics Facebook page (Messenger). ;)

My dog was a contortionist when it came to his surgery. I had to use an inflatable AND a cone, AND watch him closely.

Hi Emily, I saw on a few of your previous videos you've briefly mentioned about Epic being prone to standing on her back legs and that you wanted to train that out other than for sit pretty and walking for tricks etc. I'm having a similar issue with my little Pomsky puppy. She loves walking on her back legs and standing especially when I'm getting her food or get toys etc. Can you point me in the direction of any videos you have already which deal with ways to train out this behaviour or is it possible you could make one if you get chance. It would be much appreciated, thanks.

Oh no, it was my ex's lovely sight hound, turn your head for a milisecond and she would have the cone off and all her stitches removed. Wish was more the horrified puppy that let her head fall to the ground and couldnt move when the cone was put on (I was handed her in a cone at the ER when she was a pup)

Thank you so much for this video, my dog was recently spayed and he has to wear a cone. Once I take it off of him, it is a real struggle to put it back on, using lots of treats helped, but I am just going to leave the cone on him for now. Because now, I have a more serious problem with it: whenever I touch his cone (to adjust it or by accident), or even his collar, my dog freaks out and tries to bite. I tried to desensitize him a bit, when he sees that I have a treat in my hand, he doesn't care at all if I touch the cone or the collar, but if I'm empty handed it's another story. Needless to say it wasn't very effective... Any tips on how to desensitize him safely? I wish I had seen your video sooner

I suggest calling the vet and telling them what happened. It could be pain related, and they could perhaps give a pain med that will make him more comfortable and therefore less likely to want to bite if the biting is to do with pain. After he is done with the collar I suggest putting it away for over a month or two and then start working on it with a different looking collar.

Thank you for all the videos! I'm getting a puppy in 2 days and I feel that I am well prepared to start the trainings with our little boy. But I was wondering... Around what age does the dog doesn't need to be trained no more? Or do we always need to teach dogs new tricks?
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the situation. Some dogs need no training at all... if you live in the country and your dog naturally likes to be around you, and you don't mind your dogs behavior and the dog is physically and mentally healthy. I think if you think in terms that dogs and humans learn from every interaction they have, that every interaction is training them, and so you are "mindfully training" your dog all the time... Making sure they confident and are not fearful of something they have to deal with daily etc. For some things it just takes a few sessions to reinforce and then the dog always wants to do those behaviors without reinforcement, but for active behaviors that require a lot of energy, sometimes they can become self reinforcing (secondary reinforcers), but other times they will need to be maintained with reinforcement, like a dog spending hours drug sniffing at the airport etc. Also a behavior will need to be repeated mindfully in training for the dog to maintain the physical strength in order to do the behavior.

What are your thoughts on inflatable donuts instead of a cone?
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 жыл бұрын
I've not used them personally but they are very good too... Just not good if you are preventing the dog from scratching their face, say if they had an eye ulcer or a tooth extraction.

Would it be the same training process for my dog that turns out to be reluctant on wearing his harness?
