Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels! In this video we teach Harley how to run on a treadmill, and show you what a dog looks like after they master the treadmill with Nix. Teaching your dog to run on the treadmill is easy, but it is important to always remember safety first. Never leave your dog unattended on the treadmill, and always stay by their side.

Just watched this and never thought of the treadmill as an option. I have a very busy life. Nearest park is 7 miles.away. and it's full of trash. The treadmill serves as an option to save 20min driving time and use it for training. Or play time. It would help us keep that energy low on super busy days. My Vizsla picked it up in the first 2 min. Run on speed 2.5 for 15 min first time. I think she loves it.

May I ask how to get your precious doggy on the treadmill the first time? I have a Jack Russell Chihuahua mix that needs to lose weight. He is almost 10 years old. I wonder if that is too old for a dog to start on a treadmill for the first time. Sincerely, TJ

I had to spend 5 or 6 sessions, my dog thought that walking while stationary was weird. I used lots of energy to encourage her and teach her the right position on the tread. I have the most exciteable, energetic dog in the world and I'll need to use the treadmill when our summer temperatures are 90 degrees with 90 percent humidity.

forcing a dog to do something that’s not necessary is absolutely not a good method. this dog has clearly not been slowly introduced so that she is comfortable, she is trying to get away and is being forced to stay on by her neck.

I live in the city and I have a large yard for a city and I also have 2 Australian shepherds which are farm/ranch dogs who need LOTS of exercise, they are crated during the 7-8 hours I’m not home and the 7-8 hours I sleep which builds up so much energy in them. During the summer they won’t need to be crated as I’ll be home and they need to get there energy out, we go on walks, play fetch, work on training, go to dog parks and even visit my grandparents farm and let them run off leash occasionally. I just needed something else as they both supposedly need to loose 10-15 pounds. So I used the treadmill today!! I only worked with my one dog today and we got up to 3.5 miles and did that for 5 mins. I’m gonna get a tug rope too for more ways of exercise. I also didn’t use a choke collar or anything like that.. I used her regular collar and I stood over her and held it just to direct her on where she needed to go and she didn’t really need it she did great.

I just bought a treadmill for my high energy pit thinking it’s solve all my problems. As my luck would have it she’s terrified of it. And keeping her positioned it for just 5 minutes takes just as much energy as biking with her had. It’s been a few days and we’ve made very little progress.

Start by getting her used to it without it running at all. Maybe when you feed your dog, place the bowl of food on the treadmill (turned off) to get the dog to associate the object with positive things. Then get the dog used to being in the room while the treadmill is turned on and making noise, with no one on it. You get the idea. Baby steps!

Thank you thank you, very helpful! I have two Aussies that have the energy we humans only wish to obtain! With that said and very true, I have PsA and have been often bed ridden due to medication sickness and severe flare ups... hence I’m a horrible pet parent currently. My first and oldest is a mini, she’s currently obese 😭 I’m training myself to be a better parent which requires me to exercise her and myself. When she was a pup she refused most dog foods (price/quality/product didn’t matter) so feeding her anything became priority... that and guilt of being sick escalated over feeding of bones 🤦🏻‍♀️ Ppl don’t do it! It’s tempting to want to feed them what you’re eating but unless you have real chicken and veggies and know how much per dog to feed... don’t give them scraps! Too help my mini socialize and feel secure when I’m at work, I rescued a standard Aussie, male and approximately 2yrs old with an outrageous amount of energy and stamina that I don’t want him to lose so the treadmill on top of play and walking is my major focus with both fur babies. I’ve been looking online for a treadmill for myself but priority is for my dogs so I was curious how long the floor mat should be? Tula’s a good sized mini (not just in width/fat but height and length), Granger of course is healthy in weight, taller than his sis and much longer so some of the great compact options for treadmills seem to lack in length for walk/running strides so yours is a perfect ex of what to look for. I’d hate to get a compact one if it’s dangerous for his use. Tula isn’t a problem fitting to but he’s very lengthy. I’m glad you don’t use treats/food motivation, as from experience, they’ll do it strictly for food and retraining without is difficult. Thanks for mentioning time (of course each dog is different) the approximate time helps to know how much to expect after introductions are over and speed is elevated over time 👍🏼 another trainer had mentioned too to look out for a dog’s gate to switch from a light walk (each side front and back leg move together in unison) to a true stride (front and back leg move alternatively from another). He said to elevate the speed (slowly of course) till you can see them change that gate/stride as it’s their natural gate for running and speed walking. Anyways thanks for sharing

Hii! Love your vids and have a question.. A lot of people that run their dogs on mills claim that a slatmill is much safer and better then a treadmill... Personally I would only prefer to use it for a light jog 20-30 min a day for my 7.5 year old Pit. Most if not all Pit owners say that a slatmill is the only way to go, but I just dont think its true as on the slatmill he will have to motivate himself to jog, ofcourse first I will use food then maybe a toy, but im not planning to stand and cheer him for the full workout every time... A slatmill also costs a couple of thousand, but even if money is not the issue in this case, what would you recommend?

Bill Smith you might have to try a cooling vest or bandanna and see if that helps. Dogs can’t handle high temps regardless of any conditioning depending on the days heat and direct sunlight exposure. Even in the shade, my Aussie (yes has a double fur coat, is always deshedded properly) developed heat stroke 🥵 after being outside just a short time but was running and chasing around the yard for a few minutes. He’s fine now but it got scary, he became unresponsive for a bit. Thankfully no kidney damage but it doesn’t take much. Really seemed impossible he was so lethargic and sick as he’s always hydrated, has plenty of accessible fresh water, shade, in good health and isn’t kept out for long periods... depends on the dogs coat, and natural ability to handle the heat without protective cooking equipment

My mom decided to buy a little Yorkshire terrier that is the most energetic, weird dog you’ll meet. I run a lot and I’ve tried to take him on runs to get his energy out but he just wants to sniff everything and doesn’t want to run at all with me. So I have a treadmill but he is terrified of it. Just tried getting him on it and he was absolutely terrified. I went slow but he was freaking out and tried to hold him while I walked just so he couldn’t get away and so that he could be in my arms and hopefully relax a little. He went ballistic and scratched me pretty good. I’m going to keep slowly working and let him walk around the treadmill and get used to it before I try to have him start. Hopefully this video helps me

Dog is obviously afraid and doesn't want to move, and you try this shit on the FIRST day the dog comes to your kennel?? The dog barely knows you. This is the best training y'all can do? Why not get her used to the actual object first before you ask her to use it? You could reward her for just looking at the mill, sniffing, touching the mill, and you'd get a dog more happier to be around it and work up from there. "they just need to get over it" is the best way to fail any dog with major behavioral issues and honestly just the most apathetic way to treat a dog that clearly has anxiety issues when it's all over the place like that. Good is not her resisting the mill at every second and forcing her to walk the fire. This is some poor training to make up lack of skills when the dog isn't on the same page, same boat, or even on the same continent as you. You could have used a less green dog like the 2nd dog and it would have been a better video because you could have started from any part of the training process because the dog would already been comfortable with it and can demonstrate getting on the mill, starting, stopping, etc. ????

I agree. Watched another video that expressed the need to give treats for getting on the treadmill, and then off the treadmill (on your command, not their own). My German Shepherd responded a lot quicker to that route over me just sticking him on there and trying to keep him in line with the belt and all that. It's kind of like crate training....they have to view it as positive and not something they're going to not want to do.

cryp06457 I get what you’re saying if you have a neglectful owner, which she clearly states one must be supervising during ever encounter with a treadmill. I’m not sure I see why it’s terrible, of course one shouldn’t tether a dog to a running machine/treadmill and walk away 🤦🏻‍♀️ she demonstrates control and safety throughout and then demonstrates with her well adjusted dog freely walking and then strutting. I think you’re right depending on the person, if you plan on not supervising then yeah, don’t hurt your dog. But if it’s a controlled environment and fresh introduction to a new exercise method then you can’t get around not using a leash to assist in helping the dog learn to trust his ability in walking or running. I think it’s very temporary

Why on earth would you put a dog on a treadmill and tether it using a collar instead of a harness? You are literally showing people how to potentially strangle their dog. Take this down, redo using correct safety equipment. Shame on you

We hear your opinion and do agree harnesses are a good option.

This is NOT how to get a dog comfortable running on a treadmill. This is how to make a dog be terrified of the treadmill because the trainer is incompetent and using force and strangulation as a means of cohersion. Please check a force free trainer who doesn't abuse the dog and risk injury to the dog. Doing it this way can actually injure the dog.
