Teach Your Horse Head Down

Having the ability to ask your horse to lower their head, and have them easily respond, will make many tasks easier and safer - whether it is to put on a halter or bridle, clip a bridlepath, or even medicate an ear or eye. Being willing to lower their head when asked is important for almost any horse (especially tall ones) and it is essential for anyone handling horses to know how to train and then ask for this simple behavior from their horse.

Your video helped me. I am 4 ft 9 in. Horse is a 16hh Swedish Warmblood mare. She played "giraffe" whenever I tried to put on her bridle, making it impossible for me to bridle her. By following and modelingyour patient method using positive reinforcement, the horse now voluntarily lowers her head and reaches for the bit as I hold the bridle in front of her.. Everytime I cluck, I make a contract with the horse that doing what I ask for signaled by the cluck means a reward. Thank you!

So glad to see you use your tongue to "click" instead of carrying a clicker. I've never understood why dog and horse trainers carry a gadget to accomplish such a simple reinforcement. I don't have enough hands! ;-)

This video was very helpful. Usually these videos are made with horses that have already learned to do it and are calm and easy, so the trainer just puts her/his magic hand in horses neck and horse lowers head instantly. Then I go to my mare that is more like Fiona, and it just doesn´t do it like i have just learned from the video :D. So this video gave me good ideas how to continue with her!

That's a big horse! 😅 I'm working on this with mine right now. He gets it at a stand still, but while moving it is a different story... still struggling with that. I would really love a video about how to get your horse to lower his head while lunging/riding. Thanks for all your very informative videos! 💚

Very useful, thank you so much :) ! How would i practice this if there is no halter? Just put my hand on her head? Because my challenge is to get the halter on in the first place 😁.

Hi I just subscribed to your training and only watched a couple of videos so perhaps you answer this question in another video. I was wondering about using the treats to have Fiona lower her head. When using this method to get her head down to bridle or halter her, should a treat always be given or not? Then, if a treat isn't given, will she continue to lower her head when asked? I have really enjoyed what I have seen so far - thank you! Judy

I understand click and treat, but do you eventually 'fade the lure' as in dog training? Will this mean that I always have to treat when the horse lowers its head at my request?

Mary E No.The horse will learn to lower it's head as manners and if he's/she's trained to, he/She will lower his/hers head automatically when your putting the bridle/halter/headcollar on :))

also the big problem is my mom and at my barn have a new rule because when i hand fed my horse he then bit my thumb and broke and tore it pretty bad. but i dont think its cause of the hand feed. after i gave him the treat i went to lower my hand and he grabbed my thumb, is there a safe way i can prevent that from happenning? thanks! i love your videos!

my horse used to be really bad at grabbing your hand to eat treats so what I started to do was lower them to the ground and allow him to find it. I then began picking it up slowly, keeping my hand near the ground. I also try to tuck my thumb so it's not so open unlike the rest of my fingers. after a few days he no longer would accidentally grab my hand!
