This video is a response to a viewer question about a 2 year old colt that doesn't want his ears touched and he's difficult to bridle. Pat provides two exercises, one sitting in his infamous chair and the other standing, to teach the horse to accept being bridled. He also goes into the important mechanics that the human has to be able to do when bridling a horse. As usual, if you haven't subscribed to our channel, we would appreciate it if you would do so. And if this video is helpful to you, please hit the Like button. Please visit our website www.thedisciplinedride.com for more information on what we do and what we have to offer. Thank you!

Time means a lot. Indeed it does. I squat with abused horses and they immediately relax and step towards me, soon as I stand I become what hurt them. It's a journey, so it is. Many thanks, Rachel in Spain.

Kind of funny as he's talking about sight and smell that the dog walks up and pees on the post😂 I love pats videos because they're not so long and overcomplicated anybody should be able to understand them and apply the practices and have successful results I have yet to figure out if he is actually a true comedian or he is just one of those people that is just funny on their own either way his humor puts me in a happy place and I'm able to avoid having to go to group😂 5:30

Glad your horsemanship wisdom channel exists. I was working as a wrangler with a group who would mishandle this process by squeezing and cutting off the nostril airway, in order to install bridles. I left them due to this and am glad to see videos showing the right way to treat a horse.

Pat the thing I like about your videos is your like me and do things traditional. I have tried for years to teach people about a cricket. It calms them and as they work the cricket they slobber which lubricants the bit so it moves smoothly in the mouth. If the bit is smooth in the mouth the less pressure it takes to get it to move. If you don't have a cricket you can wrap a Bull Durham sack with salt in it around the port. The horse gets salt he wants more so he runs his tongue over the sack to get more salt. I learned that from Ed Connell me and his daughter Leslie are still good friends. I know you know who that was. I think it's funny people say oh my God my horse slobbers all the time. So does it gross you out I don't see a problem. To me one of the worst hunks of junk ever put in a horses mouth was an aluminum bit. For me personally it's sweet iron. Whatever taste bad to us taste good to them that's why copper in a mouth piece. Really enjoy your work been doing this my whole life and I'm fixing to be 60. I've trained about every kind of horse there is except Dressage. Love that you are out there showing good basic horsemanship and no "MAGIC WAND." There's a line from an old Waylon Jennings song and it's the way I feel sometimes trying to teach people this. "You can still hear me preaching to the people who don't listen praying someone's gonna hear." Oh and almost forgot I'm in the Red Desert of Wyoming. I run the Rubby Knolls Ranch. 67,000 acres and almost 900 momma cows.

Pay attention to what this man is doing and saying. I can't emphasize it enough. He says, "knowing how to shoe a horse is good trading material". He is absolutely right. My farrier earns over $350,000 a year. If I were a young man or woman, I'd learn how to shoe a horse.

I'm hoping, got my fingers crossed that there's gonna be a prize for the first observant viewer who spots your extra in frame 5:19. Is that one of those Hollywood extras? What do I win? Don't tell me, my prize is right where the extra left it. I had to say that or I would've exploded. Of all ya'lls videos, this is one of my favorites. When I first saw it I showed it to my granddaughters so I could say "Just like I told you." After my husband retired we moved about 45 miles to down size our house and upside our acreage. We have 400+ acres in the Texas Hill Country. I wanted my grandkids to have some of what I had. 1. Be home by dark 2. Watch out for snakes 3. Don't leave the gate open. Close it behind you. 4. DON'T let the screen door slam. I do have a hoof question. I have two horses, older, their hooves are completely different. My gelding has cast iron hooves. He has lived and was a ranch horse in the rocks. My mare, a retired barrel horse, lived mostly in sandy country and I have to be very careful with her because she doesn't tolerate rocks barefoot. They both stay shod, but my question is; is the difference in them genetic, early environment, both or neither?
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett Жыл бұрын
It’s true that some horses have better feet than others and I believe it’s genetics. However, when we ride in rocky country with a job to do, we always put shoes on them no matter how good their feet are. We can’t afford to get our horses sore footed and it’s not fair to ask them to work in those conditions.

I like Pat's work and advice. For SOME horses, I put a fly bonnet on them with the ear pockets on the bonnet. It helps get them more desensitized to being touched. I don't leave it on perpetually. I gauge it according to the horse and give them breaks from it. It can help a lot. Then I set my mind that nothing is a big deal and the horse just blends it in over time. I need to get that snaffle that Pat designed.

I would really appreciate, best regards from Switzerland, 🇨🇭 🐴👍🏻
@PatnDebPuckett

You need to do your homework with the tarp and flag. After your horse is good with both of those items and all the exercises in a roundpen, you need to ask the question “When is spooking a habit?” In other words, is the spooking out of fear or is it just something the horse does because he always does it? When that is the case, you ride the horse forcefully up to each and every thing he even thinks of spooking at. If it’s a rock, ride him on top of the rock. A bush, ride him on top of the bush. Make it uncomfortable to spook. As Ray Hunt used to say “Make the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult.” One other thing that I have found to help with horses that spook out of a habit is to get moving. Don’t walk slowly through the trees with your horse having ample time to find something to spook at. Trot out. Make the horse face some decisions about whether or not he wants to spook or stumble. But first, do the homework with the tarp and the flag. Here is a link to a promotional video for a DVD we offer on the tarp and flag: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrqWibCE38_KdH0.html

Never learn to milk a cow. We had a foal that was snake bit. Of course it was on the end of her nose so that the swelling prevented her from nursing. Some how my wife new how to milk a mare. So we would take turns milking the mare so that we could relieve her pain, keep her in milk and then use a syringe to get the milk into the foal. The foal is now around 12 years old.

I have a question I have been inquiring about for a long time, I have heard for years to fully calm and break a horse you must lope the crap out of them. Is this true? Or must you just simply put miles on them no matter the speed?
@shirleycooper2048
@shirleycooper2048 5 жыл бұрын
Logan Ellis very untrue about loping a horse a long time to get what ur asking about. That's old school from very rough trainer. Its psychologicly "beating" a horse down to submission. Now the correct lunging is good. But that wasn't what u were asking. PLEASE don't take what I said the wrong way. I meant it in a nice helpful way. I use to think like that too when I was young. We didn't have KZfaq, computers, etc to learn from. Lots of good learning here on KZfaq. Good luck!!!

I like to ride my filly better in a rope halter, because of the way she roots and throws her head with the bit I have. But what I'd like to know, in your opinion, should I be looking into her teeth being a problem or is it because she's got a dink for a trainer? (Me) She sometimes throws her head with the rope halter and she throws her head in the pasture, when something bothers her. Something on the wind, a deer, a yowling cat... That head flings up. She was given to me as a weanling, so I know she's not had any dental work done. I'm on the fence about pulling wolf teeth, cuz I'm ignorant. Thoughts from any and all with more experience than I?
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett 4 жыл бұрын
We always pull wolf teeth but they are rare in fillies. Whenever we have a problem with a horse slinging its head or having any problems with a bit, we check teeth. It’s just part of the process of elimination. Once you know there’s nothing wrong with her teeth, you can move on. Until then, you don’t know if she’s in pain.
