Күн бұрын

As Lisa Sanetti is quick to point out, most people can vividly recall their favorite teachers growing up. In her talk, Sanetti discusses the crisis of teacher stress which she believes is a problem whose affect won't be limited to the teacher and the students. She further explains why we need to pay more attention to this issue and outlines the possible implications of it.
From the 2018 TEDxUConn Conference which took place on April 8th, 2018. The theme for the event was Zero to Hero. Dr. Sanetti is an associate professor of School Psychology at the University of Connecticut. Her research interests include implementation science, educator well-being., and school-based mental health. Her research has been funded by the US Department of Education and private foundations. Dr. Sanetti developed and evaluated a system of supports to facilitate teachers’ implementation of school-based interventions that is being adopted by schools across the country. She received the UConn Early Career Scholar Award, Early Career Scholar Award from the Society for the Study of School Psychology, and the Lightner Witmer Award from the American Psychology Association for the scope and impact of her research. Dr. Sanetti received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a licensed psychologist in Connecticut, and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Prior to joining the faculty at UConn, she was a behavioral consultant serving schools throughout New England. In this role, she provided assessment and intervention services to children with significant disabilities and/or mental health issues and their families and educators. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I left after 8 years in. Title 1 school. The secondary trauma and burnout due to the nature of the job eventually did me in. It’s not a sustainable profession anymore.too many moving parts/ demands and not enough support or respect. The system is beyond broken and sadly will not change anytime soon

I'm only in my second year and learned this: it doesn't matter how good of a school you teach at, teaching is still a stressful and borderline toxic profession. And it doesn't have to be this way!! Administrators can only do what their supervisors let them and even they wish this could be different! I got in trouble for cutting items out of my classroom from a shared lesson (we are told to assign more work than necessary) and for giving my class an open notes test (the real world let's you have resources). I'm only 23, 2nd year in and burnt out! If I want to make any adjustments, i get in trouble, even if I still meet standards. I'm tired, but I dont know what else to do with my life.

They overwhelm us with too many professional development, SGO's , even mentors who when you ask them a simple question what they only do is to add it on their profile and report it, just to do their jobs. They keep adding exams like Tp, the alternate route has now 400 hours, program and extra assignment. They ask us to give students quizzes and assessments all the time. Report cards open on due date and closes again in 2 days. Several observations. They think that textbook is old fashion and give us the curriculum like titles and we have to burn out looking for resources or create our own. It is a failing school system. They ask us to improve students scores so the district remains with high scrore results even if students know nothing, it is business. !!!

@jamesc4840

So much of the stress could be countered by simply employing more teachers. If you give teachers ample time to plan and tailor lessons properly, the children will be more engaged and the teachers more passionate. Unfortunately after all the extra curricular arrangements, marking, cover, playground duties etc it leaves teachers with minimal time to actually plan for the job they applied to do.
