Dimash the best pop-op vocalist ( I coined the term “ pop-op” )but regarding sustaining one note with vibrato in a live performance) Dimash might be able to sustain a belting note for maybe 30 seconds but you won’t believe what I am about to tell you. Johnny Mathis in a mega rare video posted by some Chinese filmography captured Mathis sustaining one note... are you ready? Not for 20 seconds , not 30 seconds, not 40 seconds, not 50 seconds, not 60 seconds not 70 seconds, not 80 seconds but... 98 SECONDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1:28 seconds. And it was accomplished with FULL CHEST REGISTER VIBRATO!!!! Please KZfaq “ Johnny Mathis one note” and he performs it live ( circa 1960s) with a background singing group ( I believe a 4 female girl group called The Lennon Sisters ). Actually the group is in the foreground and John is in the middle of the background. Reading the comments of those who watched the video, one ( who claimed to be a professional vocalist ) said he accomplished this using a technique called “ circular breathing”. In any event, you being vocalists and teachers perhaps you and your students can benefit from watching this video. All love in isolation from Miami Beach, Florida, Al ps: regarding Johnny Mathis. If you would like to watch a beyond amazing performance of him singing a medley from “West Side Story” then please click the 9 minute 18 seconds version ( he is in Germany) and NOT the numerous 4 minute ones. This version moved me to tears and I feel it will touch your heart and soul. pss:Let me introduce you and your readership to the most underrated male pop vocalist of the 1950s and 60s. His name was “John Gary” and he had 4 octave vocal range and a vibrato that was unique and recognizable. He was also Elvis Presley’s favorite ballad vocalist. Sadly, he passed away in 1998 at age 66 but left behind a legacy of over 20 LP and CD recordings. If you decide to privately react, may I suggest 4 songs-one titled “If You Love Me ( really love me)” that contains what I believe to be the longest sustained PHRASE in recorded Lp history( 13 words and almost 30 seconds. ) I’ll elaborate in a moment. But first let me suggest you react to my 4 songs in this order: “ Once Upon A Time” ( many professional vocalists have performed this song but John Gary’s version is considered by far the best. He soars into the celestial realm) “ The Sound Of Music” ( John was the FIRST to record this song-before Julie Andrews and it’s ironic but the person who posted this has the photos from the movie starring Julie Andrews and the young German singers. Also, John Gary’s mother was a professional concert violinist and when John was young ( about 8 or 9) she had him vocalize to the sound of her violin and that’s one of the reasons for his amazing high notes. Another reason for his sustained high notes was his invention of an aqualung and with it he set a world record of staying underwater with that Aqualung for an amazing 2 hours! And finally : “ Granada” ( the one with all English lyrics) Most professional vocalists consider this the best pop rendition ever recorded. All love, Al psss: My 2 favorite albums of John’s are his first “ Catch A Rising Star” and “ Tenderly” wherein every song is outstanding and his backup orchestra ( mostly of violins) is fabulous. -Al -Al
