I like how Sue isn’t pointing out all the rights and wrongs in any contradicting, condescending or criticising ways but she’s delivering constructive criticism to Jenny and she’s more suggesting ways to improve how the class goes and she’s giving helpful advice too.

Sue Cowley looks so cute. I love it when teachers motivate students to learn.

Too much talking from the teacher and not enough pupil interaction.

i cant really tell what exactly the children did when she called them out to get a green card- and perhaps its the way the video is edited that makes this confusing -she appears to just be addressing one student but then two go and get green cards. I am thinking maybe the name of the blurred out student needed to be removed and in doing so other context has gotten lost.

The lady observing the lesson was more concerned with what the students were doing and not what they were learning.

doing is learning.

doing does not always equate to learning. For example, I could write a letter to my mother, but I'm not learning anything because I'm using knowledge I already know. Or, I could pick up a flute and start blowing into it, but I won't be learning anything. And I won't be involved in the act of learning until I reflect on my performance and am provided feedback on strategies on how to improve. The act of learning is a cognitive process, not physical.

so I guess to you learning is simply knowledge? You won't know what a flute sounds like until you blow into it. we don't read manuals on how to play an instrument and then suddenly become virtuosos without ever having touched the instrument. Everything we do is reinforced with an action. Even speaking is learnt through physical actions. Babies don't wait until they know the sound before trying to reproduce it. You'd be surprised how much reflection goes on without the teacher or even the student being aware.

and the application of knowledge. That's where blowing into a flute comes into play or during practice which needs to be monitored and corrected for learning to occur. But we're talking about the process of learning. what is the key ingredient that differentiates doing from learning. Everything we do can be considered as doing, but not learning. when I walk down the street, am I doing or learning and why? When I read a book and take notes, am I doing or or is learning also involved? The difference is the cognitive process. Am I working with new information, storing it and making sense of it or am I dealing with old information or new information I am not processing and therefore not learning? Those are the questions a teacher needs to keep in mind when monitoring students. And I'm guessing by my original comment, I didn't see any evidence of such a perception when I watched this.

Every single experience you have is an act of learning wether you like or not. Learning is not sitting reflecting and taking notes.

Once you start setting objectives, you start ruining education - what a boring job OFSTED have made teaching.

The person doing the talking is the one learning ... so... looks like this is a great learning environment for the teacher to keep getting better in her content... Perhaps an infusion of understanding the most recent discoveries in the brain and learning would help out this teacher... Cynthia Porter, Ed.D.
