Dear Andrew Sokatch, I hope you'll read this: Thanks a lot for your talk! It's exactly what I needed in this moment and you were exactly saying the things I just recognized in my life ..school is all going well but taking a single subject in college is pretty hard and makes me feeling dumb or not good enough so I was already thinking about giving up and try it later again. Now not anymore, it is an amazing talk! Greetings from Germany :)

Hi Andrew Four years later and your Ted Talk is very relevant today as character building is imperative for all children and schools are not always able to bridge that gap.

Parents should be the teacher of character, morals, and values. Not a teacher who may have values not aligned with the family.

“Character” is a set of values that transcend social, economic, educational, and cultural values. They are typically agreed upon globally as a skill set that people need to be successful. Perseverance, integrity, kindness, and belief in oneself are not just things that should be taught at home. Kids need reassurance and reinforcement constantly - both at home and at school. I honestly never thought anyone could be opposed to schools reinforcing these qualities in children.

You made the same mistake those-who-you-complain-about made. You say that "the other half of the picture" needs to be taught. But, what both sides omit is the "why". You use a "why" to sell this at the end, as an after thought. But the main intro should be about "You can lead a student to class, but you can't make him thirsty to learn.". You failed in that, the same way the teachers of the "first half of the picture" did. Why learn something you don't value?

Why? As Mr. Sokatch has said, there is already lots of evidence that these character strengths can be taught through easy interventions. Look at the research on teaching perseverance of Angela Duckworth and Carol Dweck (on changing students' mindsets)
